Great choices by Cloris Leachman. So easy to make the scene simply lustful but she portrays the "want" borne out of being affection deprived for so long. The light and life return to her after the kiss. wonderful!

I saw this movie and The Graduate for my first time in the summer of 2005. Really did something to me. The whole thing with youth vs experience, lust becomes despair, and greener grass syndrome. Then about a month later I pretty much did the exact same thing seen here. You're right, there is something to be said about an older woman and a taboo relationship, along with the emotional crash and wrecked lives that come at the end.

Really a classic movie, but oh so sad. Sonny and Ruth loved each other, but remember what era and environment they were in. In the novel, it's pretty clear that Ruth's husband, the coach, is gay. So she was dying for some love and attention.
