Aidan, a player has to be tagged directly with the baseball ONLY if he is not being forced to a base by a player running behind him. So if someone is on first and the ball is hit to second the second baseman merely has to touch the base. If a hitter hits the ball and runs to first then tries for second, he is not being forced to the base so he has to be tagged out directly. Theoretically he can turn around and go back to first base if the ball comes to second and he wouldn't be out. So when you hit the ball they only have to throw it to first base to get you out at first, they dont' have to tag you. BUT you can tag a base runner who is off the base any time and he is out.

A tag is needed on all bases except 1st. It's when there is a 2nd runner behind forcing you to the next base that touching only the base earns the out.

Aidan, that's his son who plays for the Blue Jays. His father was very raw, what they call a 5 tool player in baseball: running for speed, hitting for power, hitting for average, fielding ability, throwing ability. Five tool players are the rarest type of player. Eventually he achieved greatness, but he was a maybe for a long time.

Aiden, I'm pretty sure he actually did that. Physics tells us that the faster the pitch comes in, the faster it can leave. When a pitch hits the dirt, much of its momentum is lost, and the ball has the "muscled" into play. There are few players who have the strength to do it. Vlad did.

Guerrero was a maybe for a long time??? He hit .324 with 38 HRs and 109 RBIs in his first full season. That was at the age of 23. The only 2 seasons he didn't have an OPS+ over 100 was his first season (only 9 games as a 21-year-old) and last season, His biggest issue was that he played for Montreal and nobody watched their games.

THe last guy with multiple clips is the legendary Roberto Clemente ("The Great One") of the Pittsburgh Pirates. To this day he is widely acknowledged as having the greatest arm in baseball history, and having grown up in history I got to see him multiple times. I have seen him throw baserunners out at first base on a single to right field. The old stadium in Pittsburgh was Forbes Field with the Centerfield fence at 457 feet away from home plate and during warm-ups before games he would sometimes go out to the warning track and throw strikes to home plate to warm up. You'd have to see it to believe it. He was also a great hitter and baserunner--he had it all and is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

Sometimes you must touch a runner with the hand holding the ball to put him out, and sometimes, just touching the ball and the base he is advancing to will put him out. Touching the base is allowed if the runner is required to move to the base you are touching. Touching the runner with the hand holding the ball is needed if the runner is NOT required to advance to your base. This is called a force out. If you are on first and the ball lands in the field you must advance at least a base, since you cannot have two runners on one base. This is called a tag out. If you are the batter, you are required to reach first and can be forced out there, but if the ball is hit well you can try for extra bases. If you do, there is no requirement to go past first base so they must tag you to get the out.

Aidan the reason why people back in the day all sound the same is because the mics back then weren't great and only picked up a certain range so just about every broadcaster "spoke" the same way to be picked up by the mics optimally.

First base you don't need to tag the runner ever. For any other base you have to tag the runner EXCEPT if an "force out" meaning the runner must run to the next base because another runner is moving to the base they were on. That's a force out and does not require a tag.

Vlad Guererro Sr was a LEGEND. Dude never wore batting gloves. The constant pain and vibration from every swing, including batting practice, is crazy. And he hit the crap out of the ball. Lots of HR and doubles in a long career. He's one of the last real old schoolers of the game

I'm old enough to be able to identify the different commentators on most of those clips. The oldest one is the Roberto Clemente clip, and the commentator is Curt Gowdy. It's true, though -- Gowdy and Vin Scully and several of those guys all had this cadence and almost a twang in their voices.

sometimes if the ball bets the runner the ump will call the runner out even without a proper tag . if you watch a second to first double play , the fielder doesnt even have to step on the bag to make an out . the ump gives the fielders the benefit of the doubt .

If you watch the replays very slowly, you will see that the fielder always touches the base.

If any previous base is unoccupied the runner must be tagged(because they have the option of turning around and going back). If every previous base is occupied they just need to touch the base. That’s called a force out.

Those last throws were from one of the greatest players in baseball history--- Roberto Clemente. That was over 50 years ago.

Sounds confusing but it’s not when you get it. A forced out is the only time you can just step on the base. Meaning the runner is forced to get to the next base because of a runner behind him has to occupy the previous base. If runners are on 1st and 2nd base, there’s a force out at 3rd and second base. 1st base is always a force out because you can’t run backwards to home plate. If there’s a runner on second but not on first and the batter gets a hit, the runner on second doesn’t have to go to 3rd. He could just stay at second so it isn’t a forced out. Therefore he would have to be tagged if he tried to go to third. Hope this helps

Because of the length of the throw to third base, the outfielder with the strongest arm typically plays in right. If he is also the fastest runner, he might play in center.

I was born and raised just outside of Pittsburgh in the early 60s and Roberto Clemente was EVERBODY'S favorite player and childhood hero. It was extremely devistating to a whole generation of children in both western Pennsylvania and the island of Peurto Rico when he so tragically died at age 38 while flying relief supplies to earthquake stricken Nicaragua on new years eve 1972. I am so grateful that i saw him play often with my dad, and to his annoyance i always wanted to sit in right field behind Roberto. He will always be my hero after my Dad and grandpaps.

There was a player in the 2010’s idk if he retired recently but his name was scooter gennett he played for the Milwaukee Brewers then the Cincinnati reds there’s a video called “ scooter Gennett’s four-homer, 10-RBI game” on KZbin
