The scene where Nathan is telling the soldier to shoot him was definitely about proving that they weren't ready. But it's also about how he's suffering and just wants to die to escape his regrets.

That exactly right, He didn't want to join the raid but forced to or he will be court marshaled for disobeying orders. but you can tell that he is full of shame and disgrace about himself, he was a man of manners and morals that had been stripes away from him after that raid. You can also say that the Emperor respected Nathan after he reply his question about the red indians by looking in to his eyes directly. The movie it self is very Fantastic.

"Tell me how he died." "I will tell you how he lived." Fun Fact: This not only marks the first time Ken Watanabe starred in an American-made movie, but it is the first time he spoke English in a movie. Blade Enthusiast Fact: The swordsmith in the village is a real swordsmith. His name is Shoji Yoshihara, brother to Yoshihara Yoshindo. Shoji is a "Mukansa"-level master swordsmith, one of the highest rankings in Japan. Location Location Fact: Filming took place in New Zealand, mostly in the Taranaki region, with Japanese cast members and an American production crew. This location was chosen due to the fact that Egmont/Mt. Taranaki resembles Mt. Fuji, and also because there is a lot of forest and farmland in the Taranaki region. This acted as a backdrop for many scenes, as opposed to the built-up cities of Japan. Several of the village scenes were shot on the Warner Brothers backlot in Burbank, California. Some scenes were shot in Kyoto and Himeji, Japan. There were thirteen locations altogether. Historical Fact: The real-life counterpart to Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) is Takamori Saigo, who led a samurai rebellion in 1877. As in the movie, Saigo ended up committing suicide in September 1877 after defeat in battle. The Emperor's attitude in this movie toward Katsumoto's struggle and death reflects actual Japanese popular sentiment toward Saigo, who though defeated, was regarded as a hero. A statue of Saigo was erected shortly after his death, and can be seen today in Ueno, in northeast Tokyo. Although this movie seems to imply that Japan's new army was trained by the Americans, in fact, it was the Prussian General Staff that assisted in the modernization of Japan's army.

Hiroyuki Sanada (who is in this movie) is also starring in a new series on FX and Hulu called Shogun. The first episode is on February 27th I believe.

Nathan didn't care if the guy who missed didn't in the beginning...it was prove the point, or die. He didn't care

Consider reacting to the 1995 award winning film "Braveheart" starring (and directed by) Mel Gibson. Besides the awesome battles, it has a great soundtrack and beautiful backdrops.

@@Belladonna313 Yeah totally inaccurate even down to being set in a time where (I believe from reading other things about it) that the highlanders did not even wear kilts.

The word you are looking for in 10:42 is Seppuku, "a native Japanese kun reading), is a form of Japanese ritualistic suicide by disembowelment. It was originally reserved for samurai in their code of honour" (according to Wikipedia).

For some of Tom Cruise's best performances, check out Born on the Fourth of July (actually my favorite performance of his), and Rain Man. The latter also starring Dustin Hoffman, who won an Oscar för his part.

For more samurais, check out the new show Shogun that's starting this February 27th. It's actually a remake of the miniseries from 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain. The original is great, and normally I would recommend people to watch that, but I doubt it would get many views on here. The remake looks really good in the trailers though, and as long as they don't stray very far from the novel it's based on, I don't see how it can be bad. :)

The story is based on a Frenchman , guess they had to change it to an American to appeal to the American audience. Nathan showed several times early on he was suffering from PTSD and didn't care if he died he drowned out that with drinking. He was spared by Katsumoto as he'd had a vision of the white tiger and Nathan had a white tiger on the flag he was fighting with. Samurai did actually use guns at this period.

Algren has massive signs of PTSD, and he quickly realizes who and what caused this. It's about war crimes of the worst kind, committed against women, children and the elderly. Despite Algren's indication that the residents of a village were not involved in attacks on whites, the now reappearing Col. Bagley destroy all the Indians. I call it pure murder and nothing else. In how many “glorious battles and victories” of the US Army did this happen? These constant flashbacks suggest just that. But the residents of the big cities don't want to know all that. Better to keep a lie alive. The use of howitzers, but especially the Gatling, shows the absolute dehumanization of war. The MG was actually supposed to prevent wars, but exactly the opposite was the case. Now you could kill the enemy in thousands, but the enemy also had these machine guns. The result was an absolute escalation of violence. In 1914, the First World War was already waiting for its millions of victims. A terrific film!

My guy, it feels like you missed a big plot point. You kept thinking they were going to win but lose a lot of people when they went into the fight knowing they would not win. Knowing they would lose everybody. They all knew they were going to die. But this would be a GOOD DEATH! They were dying for whst they believed and they were going down fighting giving them everything they had and then some.
