He was probably speaking about His chosen people, Isreal, the Jews, who have always had God but will be the last to see Him for their hearts have been hardened. But one day they too shall know whom they have pierced, ie the Lord Himself! God is full of grace and in this way He has enabled the promises of His chosen people to include also the gentiles and the rest of the world, that we too may be with Him in heaven! Then He returns to the hearts of His chosen nation to let them also be with Him in heaven, so that some who were the first shall be the last! Amen!

People that are last chose to stay behind and help others catch up and it takes patience to miss out on things u could of had if u chose to keep going and winning over others so the ones that are last have made great sacrifices to hang bk to do gods work or to do something that can help others. Being last can involve patients as well ........ I can't explain what Jesus meant but I understand because god finds favour in the hearts of people who became last by doing what's right in the eyes of god
