Oh,and you did the absolute right thing by not turning anyone in. First off most of the people asking for help have the horses welfare in mind, that's why they are reaching out for help. And if you did turn people in no one would come to you for help. So,thank you for helping them out.

Yes - they look not as bad as exploited and "discharged" Belgian draft horses of the Amish. If you see the starved pitiful gentle giants in the kill pens waiting for kind people to save them from being killed you will have tears in your eyes. I support a rescue in TX now from Europe...

You are right in not turning them in. If they were animal abusers they would not reach out to you for help. You are doing a good thing by helping them. Love watching you work with horses.

The mare is thin for sure but the foals are in pretty good shape. A foal can really pull a mare down .I would not be so harsh to the former owners.
@Carole2Kittens Жыл бұрын
So smart to worm them. That may well be the main reason the mare is so thin besides the fact she has been drained by foals. Thanks for being compassionate to horses and people. The former owner didn't just dump them off at an auction but left them in a happy place.
@maryajaniak2896 Жыл бұрын
You made the right decision. Once she's around a few days, I think she will settle down especially when she's had a few days of available hay. Her baby looks like it got the best of her fortunately. The babies are following whatever the mare does. That's a great gift for Casey, and a good energetic sport for Blake and his friends, ice skating. Once your chores are done, you'll be able to relax yourself. Always the best to you and yours!

The mare needs some groceries and assessment, sure---but after watching my favorite Horse Rescue videos (Horse Plus Humane Society) for the past couple of years, she's in really good condition compared to a lot of the ones they rescue that are borderline needing to be put down (and a lot must be put down, they are so severely injured or sick or starved). I agree with your stance on not reporting the people! Those folks were doing their best, and when it came down to it, were willing to reach out and let them go to a better situation. Hey if your audience members REALLY want to scream at what's happening to some horses, they should try widening their scope of what they watch. I hope it all works out for these new babies.
@Carole2Kittens Жыл бұрын
I also watch Tawnee and Jason's rescue operation; Horse Plus. The owners of these horses found someone who cares about horses and didn't just dump them at an auction . At auction the mare could have ended up on a slaughter truck headed to Mexico.

I really dislike people that go around pointing fingers and saying, "You should report them". Now there are cases where real neglect happens. But more often than not, the owners of horses don't. Sometimes something happens to where they either can't afford the food. Sometimes it can be due to an illness or a hospitalization with no help from others. So to EVERYONE! Before you start trying to be hurting. Try first finding out if there is a good reason the horse hasn't been fed well or got its hoofs trimmed or whatever. If there is a good reason, then try to help instead of hurt. It's obvious today that due to feeding prices having gone up so steep, many simply can't afford food, hay, worming, and so on. In this case here the owners found someone good to take them but this is the exception and not the rule to find. So if you know of a horse that seems thin or you think it needs trimming or whatever, Help instead of trying to take something away from someone.

The people did the right thing by reaching out to you. It takes a lot of feed to keep a nursing mare in good condition. You did the right thing by taking the horses and not turning the people in. Hopefully the mare is not pregnant again. The two mares that I rescued in 2010 were both pregnant and skinny. When they got to my house, both the mares put their heads to the grass and grazed for quite a while. They did gain weight quickly with a pasture full of grass. One of the mares was estimated at 7 years old, the other one was estimated between 3 and 4 years old. The older mare had been severely abused, but she's a happy girl now. The younger mare had never been halter trained but was very easy to train. They're both really sweet mares and I will not get rid of them. I love them both.

The mares' nose and poll are likely sore from where that halter has dug into her skin . Maybe it can be adjusted or replaced with one that doesn't ride in the same spot. I bet she will warm up to people with regular feeding ,treats and gentle grooming. She also might need her teeth floated. Next to worms it's a common cause of weight loss. Of course having been underfed while with a foal is the most obvious cause and it could be all three. Thank you for taking them on. Hope they all find good homes and no doubt will improve with your familys' care and attentions until they do.
