I read The Last Wish earlier this year and even bought the second book. I really want to get to the series but I did have trouble really getting into the short stories. But it was interesting and I think I would like a full length novel more but I just need to get myself to pick up the next book... maybe soon!
@CapturedInWords5 жыл бұрын
I can definitely understand that, I feel like short stories just don't feel as accessible than an actual full length novel, since they can skip out on crucial worldbuilding and character depth that is usually needed to hook people early on, and instead focus on small adventures. I definitely felt more invested once I got to Blood of Elves and the actual plot began to move forward!

Captured in Words exactly! I’ve heard this series is absolutely amazing and I want to finally find out for myself what it’s all about. I’m not sure if it was the translation or because they were short stories but I wasn’t as invested as I know I should have been.

Im on my 4th attempt to read it all the way through as im bound and determined to finish the series bc i love the stories. I absolutely LOVE the witcher storyline on general. Obviously the show got me started on it but the books are more detailed Obviously. There is alot of content from the last wish in the witcher series on Netflix. Just finished The Last Wish and I'm also playing through the games for the first time (20+ hrs into The Witcher 1), so this was exactly the type of video I was looking for. Your editing is fabulous and I love all the gorgeous Witcher art showcased throughout, really adds more beef to the world I've been immersing myself in. Not that The Witcher 1's graphics didn't flesh out the world but you know, whatwith Geralt's character model looking like the snakey lovechild of Voldemort and Lucius Malfoy, the first game makes it a bit hard to imagine our protagonist super heroically or dastardly. I am enjoying the game nonetheless. Thanks again, I'll be marathoning through your videos in no time :)

Read the books, honestly I hate short stories but love this book. Short stories weren’t really designed to world build only cement the characters starting points. It give the reader a better understand just how much Geralt, Yen, and Ciri have changed by the end. Further, I loved how each story had a philosophical question that was asked while still leaving the answer ambiguous. Lastly, each story seemed to me to be put specifically in its certain place to give a secondary narrative pattern which is subverted with every story for example the chapter the words her had a theme of love lead people to do evil/bad things while the next chapter A grain of truth flipped this theme on its head by have the love be tainted by the nature of that love showing how love can be destructive. While the first chapter touch’s on love philosophically the second Chapter does a deep dive into the topic. Literally every chapter is like this. It’s why I personally think this is the most well written books in the series.

I don't know polish, but I've read the Spanish translation of the series, and it has surprised me that you said that the english version was easy to understand because I found the Spanish one quite hard to get through; even while reading the third book I had to constantly stop to check words in the dictionary. And I'm a native spanish speaker used to read fantasy. I really don't know anything about the english translation, but I can garantee you that very little has been lost in the spanish one. If you have a really good level of spanish, (and, as me, don't know polish), I reccomend you try reading those editions.

TBH I've red the stories from the magazine first, the book just adds the frame story. Each of them was supposed to fit in just few pages (whole magazine is like 40-50 pages and covers 3-5 short stories plus some journalist stuff), so there goes worlbuilding. Also monster descriptions were not required back then, lot of us as childs were told stories with Strigas, vampires etc. Also no internet back then. Not in real way. I've tried to red the official translation to English and must admit it's good, but rough. Lost lot of poetry between the lines. But heard of fan-made one and (Sword of Destiny) at least a level higher.

Really good video! As someone who is from Central Europe and who's read all the books, played all the games and really considers the Witcher one of the best fantasy franchises out there, I would recommend covering at least the Sword of Destiny, which is, in my opinion, the best in the series and it is there that Sapkowski lays the main foundation of the Saga. The world-building aspect of The Witcher series is an interesting one. From his interviews, Sapkowski comes across as almost an anti-worldbuilder. For him, the story is everything and there's simply no need to create something outside of it. He actually never even made a map. Funnily enough, despite this, his world comes to me as one of the most coherent and believable out there.

A "more adult version of the Brothers Grimm stories"... say what? You clearly have not read the original stories by the Grimm's, they are, to put it mildly, 'grim'. Other than that great video, keep 'em coming!

I have read some of the original Grimm’s stories, and yeah they are very dark, even bloody at times. But I was more so referencing the sexual content in Witcher, though I probably could have made that more clear :P

This is one of my favorite fantasy series of all time. Gerald, next to Gandalf and Galadiel, is my favorite fantasy charactor of all time. Its a shame the series is done.

There is still a chance the author will provide us with yet another entry, he has been talking about it a while ago. It would perhaps be some sort of sidequel though. Here's hoping he gets it done as I loved not just the main story, but especially those standalone stories.

The books are supposed to be grim and dark. That's the Polish style.
