Futurama had an incredible run and survived multiple cancellations over 14 long years. When the show finally came back with new episodes on Comedy Central, reviews from fans were a little mixed. At least until, The Late Philip J. Fry, a complete masterwork that would go on to win an Emmy. Join my breakdown of the state of Futurama leading up to this episode, and why it was so important for the series, and the fans, during those last couple revival seasons.

A point that I think got overlooked is that the second trip around was actually important to closing the time loop. The writers have talked about being very careful about doing things like closing time loops and resolving paradoxes, and I believe them after working through what that second trip meant.

Gonna be honest here, I actually like Futurama more than I do with The Simpsons.

My favorite joke, and one of the dumbest, Is Prof: "Oh we renamed it [Uranus] long ago to stop all that gobbledygook." Fry: "Well what's it called now?" Prof: "Urectum" - I still think it's the best show of all time.

Futurama did the whole 'killing and replacing yourself in another timeline' thing before Rick and Morty. In some ways, it did it a lot better.

As much as I love Futurama, I don't want it revived. The ending was perfect.

You forgot the second round where he missed Hitler and shot Eleanor Roosevelt

If I’m not mistaken, it sounds like Hitler says “Betrachten Sie meinen Schnurrbart!”. In English, that would translate to “Look at my mustache!”

My brother was one of the people who wrote in to bring back Futurama during one of it's cancellations. He wrote a letter every single day. 365 letters worth of "Don't cancel Futurama!", and it worked.

So get this: The Luck of the Fryrish was the first episode of Futurama I've ever seen. We were trying to find something to watch with my parents and came across Futurama's intro. By the end of the episode even my dad was teary-eyed and my mom and I were completely DESTROYED. What a clever show. Definitely one of my absolute favourites! Wish it went on for years like South Park or Family Guy.

I think the ending of Game of Tones (when Fry and his mom got to say goodbye) was one of the most emotional endings they had, even over Jurrasic Bark (watching Seymore wait for Fry) and Leela's Homeworld (seeing how Leela's parents were always involved in her life).

When I was younger, about 6 (so 2002ish) my dad worked at a resort so he wasn’t home a lot. One day he was home for an evening and my mom was out with friends, my dad and I watched Futurama all night, he made little me promise not to repeat anything I heard the robot man say, my mom was vaguely horrified but Futurama was the thing my dad and I shared for the rest of my childhood. Jurassic Bark was the first piece of fiction to make my cry and it was the show that made me fall in love with adult humor cartoons.

My favorite line is from "Roswell that ends well" where the professor warns Fry about changing the past.

69 year old here, so I've seen a lot of TV in my life and Futurama is my favorite show of all time. I still watch it constantly on dvds- both homemade copies off tv, and commercial releases. Sounds crazy but, to me, the characters are real- actually, that does sound crazy, but shows how well the characters were written/developed (and voiced). Give me Futurama, any Laurel and Hardy, and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World to watch and I'm happy.

Something that didn't cross my mind until now. In "The Cryogenic Woman" a recently thawed-out man tells Fry that he wanted to meet Shakespeare because, and I quote: "Oh, well, I wanted to meet Shakespeare and I figured that time was cyclical."

My favorite episode was The Sting. It made me cry so hard. Seeing Leela go through such heartbreak after the loss of fry, to the point of her even attempting suicide, is just something I have always loved. I grew up watching futurama and it’s something I hold very closely. I’m happy everyone else loves it too. I also love the way they ended the series with Leela and Fry traveling the world, only to end up seeing the professor again and getting a chance to start all over.

I think Futurama is one of the best pieces of moral storytelling ever made. The jokes and references were always great, but there were a lot of episodes that really punched you in the guts. That episode where Fry is trying to revive the fossil of his dog Seymour. He gives up when he learns that Seymour was already old by the time he died and figures he lived a whole other life and probably wouldn't remember him, but then it goes back and shows Seymour just sat there waiting for Fry outside the pizza shop year after year until he died. I cried a bit.
