Low arm speed = pearl. I still love my pearl, even tho its easy to overpower it. Its so much fun tho, to trust the turn and watch it float. The pearl is what my wife drives with for now. Once you get higher arm speed, the pearl becomes a utility type disc. Gold pearl in 150's is a great fit for noodle arms, just gotta be careful about the wind. Once the pearl start turning too much, I suggest moving up to a Gold Fuse. I use the 150's Nuetron Crave as my safe 'driver'. Its just a slightly more stable River. A beat up gold River is fun for sure, IF you've no headwind and you've a little arm speed. I think the old math of (max distance you throw, divided by 35 = highest speed disc needed) holds true. Thanks for the vid! Im a woods player from the 90's. Definitely past my peak, but theres a lot of fun to be had, even if the drives arent long.
@NickArnette9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the recommendations! I've never heard about the max distance divided by 35 before. Wow! ....so someone who throws 300 max should be using no more than an 8 speed. Good to know. Thanks for sharing and helping out us low arm speed disc golfers!
@shanesplanetshane37959 ай бұрын
@@NickArnette Its a rough equation. I throw about 250'-300 on a good day. I do have some 9 speeds in my bag, but just a couple insanities (150's class fission/flippy, 170's plamsa/Nuetral). In field work, I find that I really dont get much gains past a 7/8 speed, for distance. 7*35=245.. so it add up properly for me. Nose angle and wind are big factors, when your arm isnt enough to toss overstable discs very far. I do toss a Mamba, but its just when im REALLY feeling froggy and winds are right. Its cited an 11 speed, but its so flippy, its useable at 9*35'(315), for flip-ups. I still say the pearl 150's is my most fun disc. With a noodle, its rare that I actually have to NOT throw as hard as I can, to shape and flip a disc. Finicky, but so much fun.

At 71 years old the frostline River is the straightest flying fairway driver in my bag.I Do love the Jade and Diamond also but they are more affected by wind and disc angle. As always, the disc goes where you throw it....
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
Yes, the River is more stable and hands a pretty moderate breeze quite well. It's good to have a reliable straight-flying disc in the bag. That's for sure!

Another great vid!! Still looking forward to the forehand video. I just picked up an Innova Valkyrie and it is really easy to throw I got it in a lighter weight 148 worth checking out.

Yes, when my forehand friend gets back in town I'll be sure and get a forehand video out. He's a really good teacher! It might be a while, he travels a lot, but we'll get it done.

I have a lot of L64 and Dynamic. The River, for me, is a tunnel driving dream. Yeah, it's no beginner disc, that's for sure. I've given several Diamonds as gifts to beginners who have played for a while. They all smile by the 2nd throw ! Nick, try an L64 Sapphire, slightly understable 10 speed (10, 6, -2, 1.5). I think you may be able to make it work. Can't say for sure, but if so, it could be a distance disc you love. It's available in lighter weights. I enjoy listening to a guy my age talking about discs - thank you !
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
I am keeping the River in my bag. I like it for flicks. I had a Sapphire and could rarely throw it well. I didn't have a forehand then so I passed it on to my friend and it's his best driver by far. I might borrow it from him and see how it goes when I flick it!

Thank you for taking the time to review the River. I have to wonder if maybe you got a bad one. I have a Maul, a River, and a Jade. Here is my take. The Maul is the easiest to throw, more so than any other disc I own (about 50 of them). The River, which is a more stable disc, takes a little more effort. I usually don't have enough speed to throw the Jade correctly; it is, after all, a higher speed disc. If you haven't tried the Maul you really should give it a try and tell us what you think. BTW, my calculated arm speed is around 45 mph (not very fast).
@NickArnette11 ай бұрын
I hadn't even heard of the Maul. Thanks for letting us know about it! I looked it up and it sounds great. Can't seem to find the Opto Air version. I'll keep looking. It seems like a great alternative to the River for my low-arm speed.

A friend recommended the 159 gr Maul 9 month ago. I ordered 2 exactly the same weight and got 2 flight ends. One goes straight ahead the otherone fades to the right time. Most used disc, sometimes Heat or Diamond.

Good review. A friend gave me a heavier one and it does fly pretty straight for me. I’m a bit younger at 52. Where it really shined for me was when I tried it with a big tailwind on an elevated tee. I had one of my longest throws due to the glide + the tailwind helping me get the speed. Might have to try a lighter one closer to yours sometime.
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
That's great! You must have a pretty fast arm because you have to throw it even faster with a tailwind to make up for the speed! That's awesome!! Yeah, try a lighter one with no wind and it might go a mile!!
@sjutton99 Жыл бұрын
@@NickArnette Ha, my max normally is 250-260. This tee was very high, wind was ripping, and disc was heading down the whole way, but the glide was amazing. Udisc said 322, 😆. I felt like 22 year old bomber instead of 52.

I did find and acquire some lighter weight discs (sub 170), bit today I'm going to grab some discs that I already know I like, in the sub 160 range.

If you look for the River in Opto Air plastic, it should be sub 160.

Yes, let me know how the lighter discs work out for you. I think you'll find them much easier to throw...good distance with less effort.

Hi Nick, I use the River all the time, but I actually think there's a better disc in L64's collection for seniors and low arm speed players, and that's the Maul. Very similar stats to the River but a bit more understable.
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
Wow! Yes, that does seem like it would be a better alternative to the River! I hope I can try one out one of these days! Thanks for sharing. I'd never heard of the Maul. Much appreciated!

Hey Nick, I recently discovered a company called Divergent Discs. They advertise that they make discs for "ultra-low power players including kids and senior citizens who are unable to throw 200 feet in total distance." For me, I throw River, Diamond, Leopard, Buzz, and everything else about the same distance, but I constantly throw the Divergent Discs Tiyanak driver at least 20 feet longer pretty effortlessly. Just throw it flat and it goes. I've started trying some of their other discs also. My bag is currently: PUTTERS Dynamic Discs Judge Divergent Discs Golem NSH Mr Putter Elevation Discs Koi MVP Glitch MIDRANGES Innova Alien (179g) Divergent Disc Kapre (164g) DRIVERS Innova Cheetah (154g) Divergent Discs Kraken (166g) Divergent Discs Tiyanak (166g) Divergent Discs Tiyanak (172g) Axiom Insanity (160g) Innova Mamba (150g)

Interesting. I thought that flew pretty well for you, but you know yourself best, so I'll defer to your judgement for how that flew! I've given the River to my low-arm-speed friend a couple of times to try, and both times he released it on anhyzer and into the woods it went. I'll have to have him try it in an open field next time!
@NickArnette Жыл бұрын
I like the River, but my problem with it is that it has to be a pretty good throw to make it fly properly. There are other discs that are easier to throw that will do about the same thing in my opinion. It took several takes to get the shots I wanted for the video, haha!!
