Although segments of the first Lawrence Welk show in color were used in a 1980s documentary, no one seems to have an entire copy of this first color show filmed on location at Lawrence's "Country Club Mobile Home Estates" in Escondido, California. That's too bad since the show is really a great one featuring not only music but some interesting segments on Welk as well. This is a very poor black and white film version of that show so if the picture is too bad, close your eyes and enjoy the music and imagine what it must have looked like in color for the first time as the Lawrence Welk Show became 1960s in vibrant color on ABC.

Twenty-five years ago at a garage sale in Joshua Tree California I stumbled upon an old paperback book about Mr. Welk. Therein was an old full color postcard from 1965 announcing the premiere of the program's transition to color. It was in pristine condition showing the Lennon Sisters, Norma Zimmer, Barbara Boylan and Joann Castle all riding in a Jeep Scout being driven by Lawrence himself. In beautiful full color it was inscribed with this handwritten note from the maestro "Dear friends, Here's wonderful news you may want to share with your neighbors. Our first show in color will come to you Sept. 18th from our Mobile Home Estates near Escondido, Calif. It's a fun filled show featuring many of the children of our Musical Family. Colorfully Yours Lawrence Welk." The postmark is from Santa Monica Calif. Sept. 9' 65 ( The business location for the show.) It is so lovely that I had it enlarged and mounted on my office wall.

This is such a great episode with lots of seemingly impromptu moments and a lively energy from the whole cast. LW is pretty funny a few times in the show, which indicates how excited he was to do this particular episode. Remembering the clip used in the 1987 documentary, I keep hoping that the color version will resurface at some point.
