Hi all Wolf Lord Rho here!
Today are week long discussion on the Astra Militarum ends... and where better to finish up, then by discussing the leadership of one of the Militarums greatest heroes... Commissar Gaunt!
Spoiler Warning to begin the events we are discussing today are from the Warhammer 40,000 novel "First and Only" by Dan Abnett. As always I really recommend you read the story for yourself first! As that's the best way to enjoy the lore, for yourself! Not only that we help to support the great Games Workshop and Black Library. Because without them we don't have this amazing lore to talk about! Link: www.blacklibra...

It has been a very long time since I read those series. I forgot all the names except that of Gaunt. Even has his special limited edition model. However my favourite moment in the series is when one of the officers asks why his chair squeaks when moving and that officer scout division does not to which that officer simple replies. "Because I'm in the scouts." Just letting other officer know that you don't enter that division unless you can move around without making a sound or be seen.

I can't wait to paraphrase Ravenor to someone, something like "boredom and indulgence claim the immoral and the incomplete. A true man may flinch away their embrace, if he is stalwart, and he girds his soul with the armour of contempt." Then add "Gideon Ravenor, from his book The Spheres Of Longing. (lean over close to their face) volume 3."

"'Come on, men! Do you want to live forever!' The noncom in charge of the squad must have been on something, I thought. Nobody spoke like that outside of badly-written combat novels." - Ciaphus Cain in 'The Traitor's Hand'. One of those little in-jokes that pepper the Cain books...

There's also a few other references to the Gaunt's Ghosts series thrown in. In one book for example an imperial dignitary, wanting to make a good impression on Cain, has him picked up from the local airport with a limo that has its interior decorated in Naalwood, which Cain's internal narration mentions is probably several times more expensive than the entire rest of the car due to the only known source of the stuff having been glassed centuries ago. Amberley's footnotes also references examples of commissars leading military formations outright and mixed-gender units that are clearly meant to be the Ghosts.
@IamLertimo
@IamLertimo 3 жыл бұрын
There's another example that is a combined joke in 'Cain's Last Stand' when a character who is clearly Corporal Jones from Dad's Army says, '"They don't like the cold steel up 'em, sir!" So many hidden jokes in the Cain books. Somebody ought to do a video on them (if you don't Rho I might do it myself ;0 )
@IamLertimo

A surprising number of them are references to old British TV shows. My favourite EVER is the Reclaimers space marine chapter having a chaplain called Tobermorey. You have to think on that one (and be a certain age...)

Dan is such a good writer that later on you see that Gaunt's officers and veteran troopers have adapted his style of leadership that you the reader will feel relief and have some sense of security that a squad is going to be okay when being led by those officers and vets. a tap on the shoulder, funny banter, then an offer of his black licorice cigar from a half-drunk Corbec means so much to a trooper even to Gaunt.

I have been waiting for this As for Ibram being a good leader of men, I think we just have to look at the other commissars under his command. Hark, Junior Commisar Nahlan Ludd and the other commissars that have join the regiment have all adopted his style of leadership. Hark is still a stricter disciplinarian than Ibram was but for the most part he follows Ibrams lead and that is the greatest proof of his abilities. To get his entire cadre of independently minded commissars to follow his lead and take a gentle but firm hard with the men speaks the loudest.
@bruvathroatpuncher500
@bruvathroatpuncher500 3 жыл бұрын
A good Commisar can inspire his men to fight by a good use of force, but a great Commisar doesn't need to use force to inspire his men nor would he need to execute his men. Yarrick, Gaunt, and Cain are very noteble since their men are inspired to follow them through hell, each having their own way of inspire their men. (Ciphas Cain is ironically the most human of all the commisars)
@Mozoleum27
@Mozoleum27 3 жыл бұрын
Not entirely, id say gaunt is by far more human, hes close to his men and they him. Respected by fighting in the front lines,not slinking away like Cain who is a commissar as well. Cain has nothing on gaunt and is more comedy to me than the world the great Abnett provides and explores.

There's two problems with Gaunt's dual position. From the POV of the greater Imperium, the commissar is supposed to act as a check and watchdog on the regular officers they're assigned to. The commissar's job is to keep not just the troopers but also the officers from endangering the overall mission through incompetence, cowardice or even treason. Gaunt has no watchdog. Of all the officers in the entire crusade, he's the one best placed to go rogue. From the POV of Gaunt's fellow officers, he's an intrusion into their domain, and some would doubtlessly be worried about the Munitorum deciding to replace them entirely because they'll never be considered as politically reliable as a commissar. His rank is also confusing as hell, because in his commissar role he is explicitly outside of the chain of command and able to ignore it at will (as long as he is then capable of justifying his actions to a commissarial tribunal), while as a colonel he is supposed to be bound by the same chain of command. Basically, putting anybody less over-the-top heroic than Gaunt into that dual position would be a recipe for disaster on multiple levels.

The job of the commisar is inspiring the soldiers and keeping morale up, while not allowing the discipline to falter. The job of the commander is applying tactics and strategy to achieve their objectives. Paradoxically, Gaunt is so detested, because he seamlessly connected those two roles. He does still inspire his soldiers, and at the same time lead them to victory, just not applying the combined perspective and understanding of the position, which might seldom cross your mind if you divide those functions to two separate people. And now I will just casually re-read all the books, cause I haven't done that in a while. :3

Great week! Up the Guard! T-shirts, flashflights and faith in emperor are (almost) as good as power armour, genehanced physiology, and a bolter. In terms of the books Gaunts is up there with the Eisenhorn/Ravenor series and for the simple reason the characters are more relatable. Space Marines are cool but you can never imagine yourself in their shoes. Also the fact that the Ghost series is on the relative low-fi end of the 40K universe makes it more believable as well. It's not all witchcraft and daemons but the human face of war, alebit 38,000 years into the future. Also, Sharpe and Cornwall are bloody brilliant. Demolished all the books in 2 years whilst reading other novels as well!

Used to love the Sharp series. That was really done well. Personally, good command is a question of earned respect. A good leader always earns the respect of his men first.

Gaunt is a truly legendary character, written by arguably one of the best authors from Black Library. Gaunt's Ghosts was the series which got me into 40k novels. There's really no comparison with any other Imperial Guard series. I can think of no other inspirational officer to lead men into battle, save for the commanders of the Adeptus Astartes.

No in all honesty it makes him one of the best ones Iv seen a commissars who can relate, morally guid, and inspire their men but also be cold enough to shoulder the burden that is sending good men to die are rare and quite honestly he should be lorded and applauded for this effective leadership style

Indeed he was by those who fought beside him, his imperial comrades were always out to kill Gaunt and his men for making them look bad essentially. Traitor general sheds more light upon that though, do read that one if you've not.

I think the argument to be made for Commissars not being given command is one that Cain actually illustrates quite well: a commissar is supposed to be outside the chain of command, able to do as he pleases regardless of rank. I forget the book but essentially after a mess-hall brawl results in some shipboard security dead, Cain has the unique position of being able to override the shipmaster's orders to have the offending guardsmen executed, precisely BECAUSE a commissar is *not* part of the chain of command.
@Mozoleum27
@Mozoleum27 3 жыл бұрын
Cain is by no means near Gaunt both in command and pure respect of his regiment. Gaunt is of course a rarity, but necessity was by far the reason as most Ghosts chain of command died on Tanith, hence why he was given the title Colonel-Commissar. Not too many from the original founding ever left the mustering fields, a shame more didn't make it out, traitors allowed it to happen of course.

@@Mozoleum27the fall of Tanith wasn’t the reason why he was made Col Commisar, General Oktar gave him his dual rank while he was on his deathbed, before Gaunt was assigned the Tanith regiment, so that he and which ever regiment/s he was in command of would have settlement rights to the first world they won outright for the crusade.

Funny that you mention sharpe (I’m a yank but I rather enjoy that series) but anyways one of the reasons why Gaunt would be despised by the other officers for being from the ranks is largely because the others higher ups come from the pompous upper crusts of society. Who see the lowly guardsmen and a mere step above depravity. Wellington after helping to defeat Bonaparte at Waterloo called his own men “The mere scum of the earth.” Which reflects the fact that for a very long time it was really only the officers who received the glory of military life. Enlisted men where seen as Brutish morons who have to be disciplined by the “nobility.” And an enlisted becoming an officer flies in the face of such notions.

Gaunt deserve his reputation over and over again. He walks the thin line between pragmatic leadership and care for his troops and the general culture of the Astra Militarum were officers are seen as way above the "ants". It is a matter of class really. An extreme feudal notion were the nobles are born to lead and the serfs are simply there to follow and enable the nobles life and do their bidding. This means the officers are extremely priviledged and a man like Gaunt is feared because in their eyes he is risking the very foundation of their esteemed status and all their priviledges. And to them , those priviledges are more important than even the Imperium
