Captain Nemo is honestly the mvp of this movie. He got and supplies all the cool equipment, he is just a badass normal dude with a sword in a world of monsters, he is a genius that invents stuff far before its time, despite maybe being one of the most normal humans on the team he commands the respect of both the others and his own men and this whole operation would have instantly failed if it wasnt for him. He is the Batman of the league.
@AliceBowie

Totally. 20,000 leagues under the sea is awesome. He wants revenge on the British Empire for exploiting India, but he doesn't really hate individual people. He rescues the main characters, but then says they can't leave, but they'll be treated well. A villain, but not really evil.

I'd say it would better to do a sequel with Shayne West reprising his role as Sawyer, set in the mid late 1900's and He's now got the Quartermain curse where Africa won't let him die, or age very slowly, on the condition that he carries the torch. Maybe even bring back the old gang, with preferably the same actors. It definitely is one film that deserves something to follow it.

I think Huckleberry Fin would have been a much more interesting character. You have him have a more modern veiw on stuff like race. But relating to how he thought freeing Jim would damn his soul to hell, these oppinions being him misery. And you could also have him have the backstory of meeting a bunch of American tall tales already like the Jersey Devil and Paul Bunyan, so he has a seen it all attitude.

I like the movie, but even as a kid I didn’t understand why Tom Sawyer was there and I didn’t like him. I thought “Isn’t Tom Sawyer supposed to be a kid?” and it really annoyed me as a child. He was the least cool character by far, even if you’re a 7 year old that has no idea he wasn’t in the comic. Also, the movie feels bloated and long. As a teenager, the memories of this movie and Van Helsing were indistinguishable. Like I thought I was remembering one movie until I rewatched Van Helsing and was like where did all the characters I remember go.

Part of the hate for the movie is related to how good the comics are. They're gritty too, and the movie was made pre-Nolan so people were craving a darker cape flick. It'd be a good HBO or Netflix adaptation these days.

I remember going to see this with my dad and he was so giddy about seeing it. If I recall, the entire selling point of the film in advertising and word of mouth was that it was Sean Connery’s final film 😂like that made it extraordinary I remember very little about this film…other than crying when Sean Connery’s character dies and “passes on the torch”. For real expected to see Shane West in EVERYTHING after this and he disappeared instead (I know he did other things after this film but I never saw adverts for them or anything and it was a stark contrast from this time period and him coming off of A Walk to Remember)

Maybe it’s just cause I was a kid when I first saw it but I loved LXG. I thought it was pretty good for such a “bad” movie. I really liked it still. I liked that they made a period piece where all the classic literature characters teamed up as the first superhero team. They should reboot it as either a new movie or a TV series with the involvement of Alan Moore so that it stays closer to the source material cause it’s a cool idea for a franchise. Think of the other characters they’ve could’ve used it the movie were successful. We could’ve had a sequel where Mina Harker is being tormented by Dracula and they have to enlist the help of Van Helsing. I’d love a new attempt at a movie about this group. Daniel Craig would be a great casting choice for Quartermain or Invisible Man.

Jekyll volunteered to help The Group, and Hyde is part of Jekyll. If Jekyll dies, Hyde dies. It's really that simple. He only started liking what he was doing later on. That sound that Hyde was reacting too, was most likely in a frequency that only Animals could hear. Think - Lex Luthor message to Superman. One final thing, the reason why the Main Bad Guy united them, was to ensure that they take the fall. They were the Patsies of his Master Plan. Which is funny, because as you guys have pointed out.. he pretty much helped himself - destroy, himself. 😅

When people talk about bad adaptations, this isnt brought up enough. LXG is one of the best comics I've ever read in my life and turned into something unrecognizable. The movie is completely different in just about every way possible. They basically bought the name and then did some other shit. A closer adaptation under a different name is Penny Dreadful by showtime. Actually, Alan Moore sued the filmmakers for ruining his work and showtime for stealing his work and won both suits.

The only reason why I think Sean Connery accepted this role is because he thought this might be a big hit. Sean Connery we’re huge in the 1960s when he was catapulted into world stardom for playing James Bond. However after that his career fell into a dwindle throughout the next decade and didn’t really pick up again until the mid to late 80s for roles in stuff like Highlander, The Untouchables (for which he received an Oscar win), Indiana Jones and the last crusade and Hunt for red October. However his career started kinda dwindling again in the 90s when he turned down some big project like he was offered the role of Dr Hammond in Jurassic Park, Morpheus in the Matrix and yes, Even the role of Gandalf the Grey in Lord Of the Rings, because he quote “didn’t understand the plot”. He must’ve thought this was gonna be a win and it wasn’t 😅

Poor Sean. Turned down GANDALF in "Lord of the Rings" because apparently he didn't understand the script. He turned down MORPHEUS in the "Matrix"--because he didn't understand the script. He was even tapped to play Deckard in "Blade Runner"--guess what? He apparently didn't understand the script. So when this mess came around, and he didn't understand the script because it sucked, he decided that it was a sign that it would become a major blockbuster. Wrong choice. Again. So he left movies and went back to his main hobby of misogyny. Alan Moore's book before this was Watchmen--possibly the best comic story ever written, that shows super-people as flawed, broken, and human. It's a theme he does really well, being quite a nutball himself. He has a really really bad habit of giving away full rights, then complaining loudly when Hollywood gets it completely wrong.

It is interesting that a movie like this was made in the year 2003, especially at the same time when Freddy vs Jason was coming out too. Back then, seeing a film like this was unheard of in the world of live-action. One would have to go read comics or wait for Saturday morning cartoons. This film truly does holds significance for the time-period it came out in, especially when considering what would come out in just 9 years. It is sad to think about this film being Sean Connery's last live-action performance (I believe he did voice-acting for two more projects later on), and I don't mean that in saying this is a terrible movie. Personally, it's a movie so bad that it's entertaining, and Connery does pull off some good moments in this film. It's just sad to hear about the experience of making this film being so bad (which I bet was probably building up over his career) made him want to quit acting and just retire. I mean, what else can you say but "Damn!" Captain Nemo is the best character in the whole movie. He is confident in being a leader, he takes care of his men, he holds the team together, and he uses what he has to do good. Granted, I don't know anything about the character in the books, I'm just speaking of the character in the movie.

If you're looking for superhero movies that aren't Marvel or DC consider animated movies like Megamind or go beyond Hollywood and try foreign films like Major Grom: Plague Doctor.

Never read any of the graphic novels but from what I understand they're supposed to be a deconstruction of Victorian literature and values and then just becomes deconstruction of fiction altogether as it goes on. That would have made for a way more interesting movie but obviously in 2003 there's no way they would go that far for a dumb comic book movie. Maybe there's still hope for a series on one of the streaming services.

I enjoyed it, but perhaps it may have fared better as a miniseries...where each character had their own episode, then the later episodes could've bought them together...

I'm sorry but this movie has too many good things in it to be "bad." Sure, it's not great but it's got a lot of interesting ideas in it that just weren't executed all that well. The acting is fine, Connery is really doing his best as an aging Alan Quartermain. Also, that whole story about Connery quitting acting because of this film has been debunked by his family. The real reason he stopped is because he was physically no longer able to do it but neither he nor his estate wanted to admit it at the time. Dame Judy Dench just announced a similar situation due to her very poor eyesight.
