One thing about those all-access cards is that they are not uniform weight, so they could potentially go even further than something uniform in weight distribution. Probably not by much though unless it was specifically designed for the task.

-OK, here's my problem with their explanation: The limit of the series of partial sums of the geometric series 1/2^n starting from n=1 is 1, meaning that with infinitely many cards, you can go 1 length over but never more. There's obviously some other physical phenomenon at play here.- Wrong series. We're summing 1/(2*n) which is divergent, so you can go as far over as you like.
@lancemyers545
@lancemyers545 9 жыл бұрын
You're right, but that isn't what they are summing. They are adding 1/(2n) not 1/(2^n).
@hellterminator

Lance Myers Right. How silly of me. In my defense he didn't say what series it was and only mentioned the first two numbers in the series and I just assumed the series was 1/2^n. I should have verifies my assumption. Thanks for clearing this up.

I actually just came up with a pretty simple equation that states how far the N'th card needs to be offset in respect to the previous card. (countig from top to buttom) Looking at card N, when the equilibrium of moments between all the cards above N-1 (two above and following) and N-1 (one above) is fullfilled at point P, then that point is the enter of mass of all cards above N. Since the center of mass of everything above is always placed right on the edge of the card below, the two masses, we are after, have the distance C/2. In my model X is the cooridnate of that point P and (X) as well as (C/2-X) are the levers at which the two masses aply their forces. SO: C= Length of a card X= Required displacement M= Mass of one card M * (N - 2) * X = M * (C/2 - X) | delete M N*X - 2*X = C/2 - X | solve for X X * (1 + N - 2) = C/2 X * (N - 1) = C/2 -> X = (C/2)/(N - 1) Soooo running that through my calculator gave me: X(N=1)= ERROR, duh! X(N=2)= 0,5 C X(N=3)= 0,25 C X(N=4)= 0,167 C X(N=5)= 0.125 C And the total offset can be calculated by the Sum of (C/2)/(N-1) from N=1 to I=number of total cards which for 5 gives you 1.0417 -> one card's length

Pausing at 1:46...Okay, I'm sure there's some nifty trick that I'm not thinking of, but here's what I'm thinking by just going straight at it. Let's say we're building from LEFT to RIGHT. Build the stack up very high, offsetting each one EXTREMELY slightly, such that it is for all intents and purposes a straight stack. Then at some point begin offsetting them a little more so that you actually start to make some progress. Once you get one with the left edge directly above the center of the base card, you can place the final one with its left edge at the center of the previous card (or, you know, an infinitesimal distance to the left of its center, so it doesn't fall). My thinking is that having the weight of the whole stack so heavy toward the left side, it's center of gravity will stay to the left somewhat, within the base of support (i.e., the base card).[thinking a little more... I don't think this would work, because if you imagine the section from the point at which you began making significant offsets, to the top, you can consider that its own tower, which would itself fall off of the vertical base...]

Hi Brian, check the student at the university of Delft in The Netherlands. Just youtube 'wereldrecord krattenbrug'. It maybe not exactly 100% similar because they do use support to build it. However in the end they do remove the support.

6:00 actually if you do that, you will reach the desired state only with an infinite amount of cards. What you need to do is follow a 1/x curve, but with a little bit of leniency so it doesn't get unstable.

I'm pretty sure this wouldn't work inside a vacuum. Part of the reason it worked in the video is because atmospheric pressure holds the (cards?) in place against each other. But it's so minimal that the naked rye can't see it. If anyone can confirm or deny this, please do.

so If I have a large deck like the 1st lot in the video and stacking in a straight vertical stack. then I slide the 3rd one from the bottom out more than 50% (weight of the rest on top holds it there) I'm sure I can then rest another card on the one sticking out in the same direction. I really thought that was going to be the answer lol.

If you want to get technical, the guy who suggested a circular path is TECHNICALLY correct. You would always be going in a single direction, it would just be in the phi direction. He never said anything about using a Cartesian coordinate system...
@jalouse369
@jalouse369 8 жыл бұрын
If you kept going circular, it would eventually do a 180 and face in the opposite direction.
@twilightknight123
@twilightknight123 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is how circles work. I'm not sure what you are trying to get at, though. Are you saying that because you would eventually "do a 180" and be facing the opposite direction, then you are not going in the same direction? Because if that is what you are saying, then you are correct in a Cartesian coordinate system (x, y, z system), but he never SPECIFICALLY said that. You could TECHNICALLY use a spherical coordinate system (rho, phi, theta system) where rho is the distance from the origin, phi is the angle in the xy-plane, and theta is the angle from the z-axis. What this means is that the phi direction is the direction that is always going in a circle of constant radius in the xy-plane. Since you sound like you don't know much about "advanced" math, I'll stop there.

Hey Brian I need help explaining physics to myself I just did this with a new deck of cards and got 3 lengths out before I ran out of halves and had 3 cards left. It was a pain though as the cards are linen finished and every time I placed a new card it wanted to float downhill on the stack. This made me think that half the reason I could get so far out was because of some form of air resistance or vacuum effect holding the cards together. I then blew on it and the whole thing drifted out another half inch before... nothing, it just floated there. My brain hurts.

Theoretically couldn't you make a diamond shape (going upwards), where you eventually extend past the full card length on both sides, and have counterweight cards on top going back towards center (hard to imagine, but like a diamond how it leaves center then goes back). The weight of the cards on top sandwiching the extended cards would stop it from falling

This is a bit like being able to count to infinity in 2 minutes, correct? As long as you progress the sequence at every half of the remaining time; (1 minute = 1, 30 seconds = 2, 15 seconds = 3, and so on..) you can count to infinity, eventually halving an unimaginably small number, much like the distance you're halving with every level/rectangular object. Also, Brian let's kick it. You seem like a total bro.
