9:00 - it may not make a great bridge BY ITSELF, but it gives you a mechanical advantage such that your support structures only need to support the load crossing the bridge, because the bridge itself is supporting its own weight. Now if you elevate the base and use a series of arches from which cables hang to support the LOAD, but not the bridge... and each cable is only supporting total load/number of cables... you can build a sturdy bridge out of materials that are actually substantially lighter and thus cheaper than you could otherwise. 😉
