Hi Chuck. I always drop a small amount of candle wax into my punches before use. Spoils Slip right out just by pushing the awl in. No need to hammer. Tink. UK

4:45 I needed this tip when I started with leatherwork. I can't count the number of rivets (And works) I have wasted because I didn't think twice about it sticking out too far, just to have it go anywhere but the center. At some point I did exactly what is shown here. A huge tip when working with rivets a lot. Thank you!

In Chuck’s shop, if your rivets are too long, “it’s time to make the donuts”!

Great video, as always. I don't have large round punches, but a half-round end punch works well for making leather washers. However, I often just trim off the end of the rivet with wire cutters. You just need to gently pinch the end with a pair of pliers afterwards, to un-crimp it so that you can put the cap on.

The leather washers arent only for height differences, if needed to dissasemble, you can cut the washer and then the post, helps to not damage the main leather piece.

Just a thought, when using an awl to push out a leather plug, I would give thought about making sure the diameter of the awl is smaller than the plug punch being cleared of the plug. Don't want to enlarge the opening of the punch with an over zealous hammer strike.. Thanks for sharing.

Hi. I’m Roman from Germany and really love you show. I learned so much from you and started leather work my self a few month ago. I have a question for the leather element for you Is it possible to fade one leather dye color to another dye color. To make my question more clear I’ll give you an example. I made a owl motive on a piece of veg tan leather and want the colors of the feathers blue but the tips of the feathers turquoise. This i want to realize by fading the turquoise color into the blue one. What is the best way to do that? Best regards from Germany

how do you keep noise level down when using pricking irons? My desk sounds like its breaking apart.
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 11 ай бұрын
You can do a few things to help, but unfortunately, it is a noisy step in the process. • Put a piece of suede under your cutting board or chopping block. •Make sure the surface you are punching on is sturdy, if not a marble slab under the cutting board and suede will help. • Strop your chisels to ensure they punch through the leather easily. • Using an arbor press to press the chisels into the leather will eliminate almost all noise if it becomes too big of an issue, but, that is an investment and not feasible for everyone. Hope that helps!

Dumb newbi question here. Why not put the donuts between the leather other then the billet?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply Ай бұрын
Not dumb at all! You want the two main pieces of leather to sit together flush and adding a donut in between would cause a gap so adding the donut to the front or back of the leather is best!

I almost never clear out my hold punches, is that something I should be doing?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 11 ай бұрын
Only if there is leather lodged in and not popping out as you punch....sometimes heavier or drier leather will do this!

Im confused: Where does the "donut" come from?
@WeaverLeatherSupply
@WeaverLeatherSupply 10 ай бұрын
The donuts are just punched out of any scrap leather from your project, you can use a 1/2" round punch or cut a square and clip the corners, Chuck talks about this at 6:05. Hope that helps!
