My dad and I have been on a journey to build our own log cabin. This series of videos is a 'behind-the-scenes' look of our bigger "Log Cabin on a Budget" series. This spring, we have been hauling logs to our portable sawmill, and processing them into lumber. In this episode I also reminisce about all that we've been through over the years to get to where we are today. And finally, I make an announcement... the legend is retiring.

Oh man 🙁 The little red tractor that could has been like a character on your channel. What a work horse. 67 years and still going , that's a testament of how well things used to be built. Can't really say that about things built today. However I do like the new tractor. Love the vids.

At 9 years old I learnt to drive on a Massy 35. Now 42 years later my sister still has it on the farm back home in West Wales. A triple roll over lottery win wouldn't buy that tractor. A legendary machine that my grandfather bought new in 1963. It has caught fire 3 times and been rebuilt. Good luck with yours and keep the videos coming.

I had a similar need to catch water for an off grid shed. For speed and low cost, I fixed a couple of tarps to the eaves on either side, and had them shaped to drain into containers. Ugly, and prone to wind damage, but quick and cheap to implement plus it increased the rain catching capability considerably.

Your vids usually elicit a wow from me at some point but this one was packed with wows! Wow that you’re retiring the legend and wow that you replaced her with an “only slightly newer” model. Another wow for your water collection system and a final wow for the efficient maneuvering of the logs onto the portable sawmill! Thanks for another entertaining glimpse of your busy construction preparation. Looking forward to the corduroy road episode. I constructed a makeshift miniature version to smooth out a part of my golf cart trail where a tree root is becoming more exposed and prominent. It helps cushion the bump! Hahaha!

That 3pt hitch will really open up what a tractor can do. At least now you can keep the logs from digging into the ground when pulling them. At first I thought you were going to get a newer one with 4wd and a cab. Best of luck with the new one, the old one was for sure a workhorse.
@TheOutsiderCabin
@TheOutsiderCabin 6 жыл бұрын
I can't wait to utilise the 3pth. It's really going to change how I do things in the bush. And my sawmill will certainly thank me for the cleaner logs. Someday I might have a 4wd with power-steering and a bucket, but I'm more than content with the simplicity and toughness of these old machines.

I have a couple of suggestions for you.. ( #1 ) take some of bark cut off and lay them long ways in front of your sawmill so that you can drive over top of them with your logs up on top of them, then put a anchor point around the base of the tree behind your Sawmill run a cable out from beneath mill and under the log ,then over the top of the log in to a snatch block up hire in the tree, then connect it to your electric winch, let the winch do the hard work and pull the log up on to the sawmill :: ( #2 ) take some of the those cut offs’s down to the swampy area where you want to build your bridge, these cut off’s will make a good Bridge top for your swampy area, you already have a pile of these and this will save time by having to go out and cut more trees down to make your bridge.

Nice up grade. We used a tractor to harvest many logs from the woods for fire wood, it helps to lower the three point hitch drape your strap over the draw bar and clevis it to the tow bar, when you raise the three point hitch it will raise the end of the log off the ground . makes for a easier drag and less dirt. Good luck with he build.

A bit of advise on the Massey. It will NOT start easily in your winter weather. Also be careful how you pull with the three point. Those lift arms won't take much abuse. I would get some side stabilizer bars for it. Also as with any three point be careful how you pick something up. That tractor will tip easily. Good luck with it.

I think I first started watching this channel because of that tractor...as a child, my neighbors had a legendary WD-9, the bigger, diesel brother to the W-4. It was a beast on the sawmill, irrigation pump, sheep foot roller, bush or tree puller, pretty much whatever they could throw at it. Anyway, I love the channel because I enjoy your projects, determination, and narration. Keep up the good work. Careful dragging logs with that 3pt hitch drawbar...the front ends on utility tractors will get light in a hurry and make a grease spot out of you befor you know it.

Suggestion... get a scrub brush with a long handle to help clean the logs before cutting them. Will save you water. Wet the log, scrub the dirt, tben rinse. Won't have to rely on water pressure alone to clean. Plus, will get the log cleaner with scrubbing.
