You know, I hadn't really thought about it until your reaction, but it's really nice that Otaku, as one of the Air Acolytes, ended up being one of the benders. He's like the good version of Zaheer - somebody who studied airbending techniques and culture thinking they would never be able to do it themselves, and then gaining the ability miraculously. But also, I wonder how Bumi made it through military training considering he's a bit of a class clown by nature.
@Spartucus1018 ай бұрын
Leadership is all about commanding the attention and respect of your peers. Take it from a retired soldier. Class clowns are some of the best military leaders. They are typically empathetic, know when to break tensions, and instill confidence. All you need to do to turn a class clown into a good leader, is make sure the knowledge and skill they impart is accurate and works to their advantage. The hardnosed, straight line, laced up "tough guy" trope, is just that, a trope. Created by Hollywood to paint military leadership as callous, robotic monsters. Tho they do exist. Most are sitting in an office, pushing a pen, "Pretending" to be in charge.
@borjankosarac36458 ай бұрын
Exhibit A for a proper examination (with a bit of deconstruction) of the trope: “Band of Brothers”. No details as I don’t recall if Angela has seen it, but given that was a real-life example (and pretty accurate to the real person to my knowledge) it feels worth bringing up.

FTR: Azula did propel herself "Ironman style" in the original series. Admittedly it was for limited distances such as when attacking the Air Temple where Zuko and the Aang Gang were, but she did do that. I was the geek in school who would pay attention and raise my hand all happy. And it was a super bummer when the teachers would like ignore me to pick others or etc. It's not my problem if other people don't care, and you'd think teachers would encourage people who are interested, not discourage. If the teacher is asking questions and no one's raising their hand it already shows that they're either not interested, or don't know, so picking random people isn't going to change that or make them suddenly interested. Now that I've gotten a degree in education I look back and roll my eyes at that bad habit of theirs.

Having been an army infantryman for 10 years, I really cracked up at this episode. Boomie gave the right military answer, break them down and build them up. They suffer together and bond, and then perform as a unit instead of individuals. However, you need someone with experience and training to break them down and then build them up. People that lack experience or training do what Tenzin did and just start yelling at people. They don't know when to pump the breaks and when to jump in. It is just well written and I suspect someone in the writers room was a Veteran or they brought in a consultant.

25:28 Actually in starwars R2 n other droids do speak. If they aren programed for galatic basic or other sentient life they speak Binary. I think some people also call it DroidSpeak but it’s usually called Binary. If people don’t understand Binary they cant speak when it is spoken to them. Anakin made droids so he is fluent in Binary.
@sillykola508 ай бұрын
My favorite deconstruction of the trope is in Jedi: Fallen Order. The protagonist grew up in an industrial environment among many droids, so he talks with them like Luke or Anakin. Then someone else joins the group who grew up isolated on a planet with relatively little technology. The droid comes up and beeps at her inquisitively. After a short pause she responds with "I don't know what you are saying," prompting a crestfallen look from the droid.

Consider this, Aang, as a parent, gave Tanzen a feeling that he has duties, and responsibilities that he has to follow through, which in turn, lead him to feel weighted down, and not as good as an air bender. Toph, on the other hand, gave her daughters a feeling that they are free to do their iwn thing, which kinda goes against thier earth element, and might be part of the cause for their conflict.

@Airstrike_snoozed_them8 ай бұрын
This is precisely the reason I don't find Zaheer's ability to fly super interesting or crazy. Obviously as you just mentioned fire benders can fly, but earth benders could also bend a rock they're standing on and even a water bender could theoretically bend the water inside of them and fly.

When we consider how the Air Nomads/airbenders were depicted in ATLA, it was full of joy, humor, and the discipline of a well-balanced spirituality. I think Tenzin is struggling to teach the new airbenders because he never learned that joy and humor. Being an airbender and air nomad has always been a heavy responsibility for him, and that's how he's approaching his teachings. It's probably why he also struggles to connect with the spirits/spirit world. He's attached burden instead of joy to airbending and its associated culture.
