Ghazan isn't releasing magma from the Earth's crust, he is liquefying the rock and increasing it's temperature. If waterbenders can make ice or steam by controlling the temp, why couldnt an earthbender do the same? Also lavabending is never really said to be a combination of fire and earth. In the The Last Airbender, we saw instances of lavabending only 3 times. First is an unnamed fire nation avatar erupting a volcano during Roku's explanation of the Avatar State. Second is Avatar Kyoshi when she split her home peninsula away from the mainland, and third is Firelord Sozin taking the heat from lava and turning it into rock. So i would say only the two Avatars shown have ever really "bent" lava and that's cause they could Earthbend. Sozin really just cooled it down but couldnt make it move or anything like that
@ladychrya93796 жыл бұрын
I think both Earbenders and Firebenders can lavabend. But since lava is closer to earth than fire, Earthbenders would have an easier time manipulating it than Firebenders. Kind of like mud with Earthbenders and Waterbenders.
@kriegerdog68076 жыл бұрын
LadyChrya I have to disagree, we’ve never seen any evidence of firebenders having any kind of control over lava itself, only earthbenders or avatars that could use earthbending. When it comes to mud bending all I really see happening is katara bending muddy water and toph bending watery earth, and the animation just looks similar. Just my opinion though

This episode is a perfect example of why I keep saying Zaheer is by the most complex, layered and nuanced villain is both ATLAB and TLOK. And if you really think about it, his philosophical school of thought makes sense, except that he's an extremist. And that is the thing that, as you will see in book 4, links all 4 of the main villains in LOK. Their all extremists. Amon was an freedom fighter, fighting for the equality of non-benders but took it to the extreme by trying to erase benders. Unalock was a religious fanatic, taking his beliefs in the Supremacy of spiritualism above secularism to the extreme. I won't spoil the season 4 villain's philosophical stance but know this just as layered and nuanced.

I think at this point Korra hasn't used the Avatar State simply because she's grown and matured. The Avatar State is a huge power and she's learned to wield it responsibly only when she absolutely needs. In the past two fights, their only interaction with the Red Lotus, she's knocked out: she's in the spirit world for this one and she's tranq in the metal clan city. In the other past fights this season, she wasn't really backed to the corner.

The Avatar State still exists and it is not 'weak because of her past lives being severed'. The difference is that unlike Aang, Korra mastered the Avatar State early on and has full control over it, so it isn't a huge, uncontrollable destructive force like it was in ATLA, but instead a steady power boost.

Compare Aang's avatar state when Appa was missing to his avatar state AFTER he defeats ozai. in the first he has no control over it and is wild and chaotic, and ready to kill everyone around him. in the second, he has control and is calm and more focused on minimising damage to his surroundings. this is the difference between avatar states. nothing to do with past lives because korra already mastered it before they got taken away.

Lavabending works basically the same way as turning water into ice with waterbending, it’s just much more difficult. Instead of freezing water which requires a relatively minor temperature and pressure shift, turning earth into lava is considered a special rare ability because it’s way harder (no pun intended) to change the pressure and temperature of rock enough to make lava.

Magma is *not* Earth + Fire. Magma is stones (or in the parameters of this show, Earth) heated so much that it becomes liquid. It's still 100% stone though. Expecting a firebender to bend magma would be like saying they should also be able to bend water vapor. Firebenders can *only* bend fire, not any heated up version of other elements. The closest thing we've seen to a firebender exerting any kind of control over lava was when Sozin was able to bend the heat away from lava to force it back into a rock state, but that was it, he couldn't move it around and control it.
@FiremanH166 жыл бұрын
They're not too familiar with chemistry it would seem. Magma is just superheated rock which as a result of passing its melting point exists in the liquid state of matter. We've seen waterbenders manipulate water in its different states so I don't know why it would be difficult to grasp that an earthbender is manipulating his element in another state of matter. Same way how firebenders are able to conjure and channel lightning because they were always manipulating plasma to begin with.

At the same time though, you also understand that some of his reasonings is flawed and his methods not only questionable but extreme as well. Zaheer is considered by many to be the best/ well written villain of the entire avatar franchise (based off of this one scene with him talking with Korra); And I am one of those believers. He is an anarchist who will not hesitate to kill others yet he is also a pacifist who tries to avoid conflict. He wishes to free the people of the world yet he will not hesitate to imprison others who stand in his way. He speaks about balance and at the same time uses this as an excuse to murder and to cause conflict (and he is utterly calm and humble whenever he does speak which adds to his character). His actions can be interpreted as insanity but at every turn, his characteristics and ideals are realistic and some would even consider justified; making him seem like an ordinary person who has suffered. The fact alone that his words managed to move Korra and make her question herself is what makes him a truly terrifying and cunning individual. And the things he talks about: it was an airbender who believed that growth comes from destruction, his idea is that the world would be better off if bad people were to die (even in reality that moral line is crossed for different reasons), the natural order is disorder, ect. Every-single-thing he talks about has to do with balance, order, human nature and change (he is basically putting himself on the same pedestal as Korra but his idea is that there must be some destruction in the world, because peace is never absolute...there is always conflict). Zaheer having the ability to persuade Korra as well as the viewers to believe his words and ideals as justified makes him a true villain and at the same time he just comes off as an ordinary man who is just trying to help the world. People can say whatever they want about this show; however...one cannot deny how well written Zaheer is as a character/villain and how much of a badass he is.

Wow! This is the first time I've seen you post a Korra reaction so early! First of all, Aiwei being a truth seer doesn't necessarily mean that his seismic sense is on Toph's level. Also, I ranted about bad police cliches in Book 2, but this is an episode that made excellent use of police cliches. Team Avatar tracking Aiwei and staking out in the hotel was very well done, especially with some great character moments and interactions. Korra meeting with Zaheer in the Spirit World is still the best part of the episode, due to the massive lore drop. We got the origins of the Red Lotus, as well as their motives. Plus, we even got a little more depth to Unalaq's backstory, which actually salvages his character, somewhat. Next episode, with Team Avatar split up and captured by two different groups (Korra and Asami - Earth Queen/Mako and Bolin/Red Lotus), we'll see how they escape from their breathtaking predicaments.

Magma/Lava is molten rock, waterbenders bend water, but they can bend ice and steam, because it's still water, the difference is of temperatures that change de state of the element. Lava bending is essentially just rising the temperature of earth, just as water benders lower the temperature of water to freeze it.

NO. The animation studio for Korra- MIR worked on Voltron. And Aaron ehaze the head writer of ATLA is doing The Dragon Prince. Aaron had nothing to do with Korra. Bryke has nothing to do with Voltron or The dragon prince. Aaron Ehase not writing Korra is one of the "reasons" people give for hating korra. It's a terrible argument, but Korra haters aren't actually known for their thought provoking ideas.

I like most of korra but its problem is it came after avatar which had only one episode that was A. Filler and B. Not very good aka the divide the other filler was amazing episodes. Korra had some great episodes but its filler doesnt stand up to avatar in that sense. But that is just my opinion.
@ayushtharval70076 жыл бұрын
Well, mostly yes, but you’re forgetting that the showrunner of Voltron was part of Avatar and Korra’s creative team.
@P0k3D0nd3M4cG6 жыл бұрын
Shroomie what are you talking about? Korra didn't have any filler. If anything Korra is a very linear, narrative driven, single player rpg while ATLA was an open-world, character-driven mmo by the same developer. They are two fundamentally different games that use their assets differently.
@shroomie1086 жыл бұрын
@@P0k3D0nd3M4cG i dont mean filler in a bad sense i use it as in episodes that dont drive thenstory forward. I think ALAB did it way better than korra. Idk maybe im wrong but thats what i think
@P0k3D0nd3M4cG6 жыл бұрын
Shroomie yea, that's the definition of filler lol. Again LoK had no filler because it's serial. While ATLA had an overarching story, due to seasons being 20 eps (as opposed to LoKs being 12, 14, 13, and 13), they could take a much looser approach in telling that story; there could be reprieve and/or lighter hearted episodes that didn't necessarily drive the overarching story forward. LoK didn't have that breathing room, so every episode builds the next.

According to wiki, the way lava bending works is Earth benders are able to put pressure on the earth and liquefy it. It might be on fire, but its still made of earth, so they bend the earth in it. That being said, I think its under the assumption that its a very difficult skill that needs to be learned like metal bending.
@svgftw3516 жыл бұрын
Loved this episode and y’all’s reaction btw but I wanted to clear up some things y’all talked about before the episode and during in regards to the dragon prince it’s the project of Aaron ehaz the lead writer in ATLA I’m not sure how involved he was with Korra if at all and Voltron is actually seven seasons on Netflix of the reboot and it’s a lot of the creative team behind Korra but not Brian and Michael the avatar creators. As for lava bending I’ll probably comment on that later towards the very end of the season and as for the place they visit misty palms oasis that’s the misty palms oasis they visit in book2 of atla where they meet the professor and find the library
@Gamelover2546 жыл бұрын

The Red Lotus are a group of *insurrectionary* anarchists. "Normal" anarchism mostly focuses on the creation of parallel structures that do away with hierarchy/domination. The difference between insurrectionary anarchism and normal anarchism is that the former believes more in the active destruction of all hierarchy - no questions asked. Many anarchists disagree with this position because it ironically reinforces power, and doesn't create anything new. You can find the effects of this in the Mr. Robot show more so than Fight Club; without new anarchist/non-hierarchical structures to gain people, all destruction does is harm people rather than help them. Also, quite ironically, mostly all mainstream cultural references of anarchism are insurrectionary, probably because it is more dramatic (Mr. Robot, maybe Fight Club, Nolan's Joker, V for Vendetta). Anarchism as it has actually existed in zones of Spain, Ukraine, Korea, Mexico or Northern Syria are conveniently ignored.

I feel that part of the story is season 2 establishing that the Avatar is objectively good and incorruptible with Raava's spirit, to make it clear who's definitely the bad guy here; remember, this show's aimed at least somewhat towards impressionable kids, need to make it crystal clear.

As I said since we're at this point. Zaheer is a good villain because he is to a degree relatable and human. He's not just BIG BAD, yeah Fire Lord is intimidating and powerful and is well written but he still is a ruler of an evil empire or army like Scar in Lion King. He is bad all through, whereas Zaheer has friends and cares about them and he does have a point, he takes things too far maybe but he has a point, the world is flawed, ex. Earth Kingdom NEEDS TO CHANGE because it's system is old-fashioned and broken In case of Raiko you can vote him out but someone like Earth Queen? Absolute Monarchy is a hereditary thing, so people have fewer options to do away with a monarch...sometimes you have to start a revolt.
