Thank you so much for all this interesting information, my name is also Lucia, after my grand-mother, and I am Greek. Greek orthodoxes memorate that day (the 13th of December), but here there are no customs like that. My father had an experience of this tradition in Europe, because he was a captain, and now I hope I get the opportunity to see it myself once in Sweden! Thank you so much!

Zhangthegreat Lucia was indeed a saint, who lived in Italy in the 3rd century. Her story is mostly like the legend, although no record of her losing her eyes, by any means. She was however, martyred. It took some great effort to do so, though!

She’s the patron saint of salesman apparently. Need some real luck for my family this year hence I’m praying to her! Who knows what the truth of this legend is. Oral traditions exaggerate but I think the thing we can believe is that St Lucia was a woman of strong faith who they couldn’t make her do as requested, and she died bravely at the hands of her oppressors. Whether Christian, Pagan or both or neither, it is these stories which keep us in touch with our roots and history as humans.
