Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) was a Ukrainian poet, artist, and humanist who is widely regarded as the national bard of Ukraine. He was born into serfdom in the village of Moryntsi in central Ukraine, but after being purchased by a wealthy merchant, he was able to receive an education and pursue his artistic and literary interests.
Shevchenko's poetry and art were deeply rooted in the Ukrainian language, folklore, and history. His early works, such as "Kobzar" (1840), a collection of poems about the life of Ukrainian peasants and Cossacks, established him as a leading figure in Ukrainian literature. His later works, such as "Haidamaky" (1841), a historical epic about a Cossack rebellion against Polish rule, reflected his growing interest in social and political issues.
In addition to his literary accomplishments, Shevchenko was also a talented artist, whose paintings and drawings often depicted Ukrainian landscapes, rural life, and historical events. He was an active participant in the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which sought to establish an independent Ukrainian state, and his works were banned by the Russian Empire, which controlled Ukraine at the time.
Today, Shevchenko is revered as a national hero in Ukraine, and his works continue to inspire generations of Ukrainians. His image appears on Ukrainian banknotes, and his birthday, March 9th, is celebrated as a national holiday in Ukraine.
On this tour we will learn about his incredible story in the streets of budapest hungary. There is a statue to the poet outside the kiraly bathhouse here in budapest and it has always captivated me.
