Just FYI in case no one else mentioned it yet, in Matt's campaigns death is an actual threat, he had his own resurrection rules that make it not guaranteed to work and progressively more difficult to succeed with each death.
@Mordring2 жыл бұрын
To expand upon it, a full system mechanics should anyone want to introduce it in their games instead of getting reckless once the party cleric hits level 5 and accesses Revivify: Any resurrection spell below 9th level (True Ressurection and Wish work as in the basic rules to show the world-altering power of 9th level spells) is a DC 10 check, increased by 1 for each previous successful resurrection of that character (so for someone who's already been raised twice the DC is 12). Since that check is a spell it includes the spellcasting modifier (e.g. Wisdom for Clerics/Druids). To further modify the DC, up to 3 party members may attempt to convince the soul of the departed to return via various means (prayer to a god, declaration of love/friendship, rage against the ruthless fate) the check made is relevant to those means (prayer is religion check, song - performance, etc.). Advantages/disadvantages may also apply up to DMs discretion depending on how accurate the contribution is (roleplaying, relevance to the departed PC's personality, knowledge about their gods' dogmas etc.). Each successful check reduces the DC of the spell by 3 (down to 1 in best case scenario in which only a critical failure will stop the process), however, every failed check INCREASES the DC by 1 (up to 13 without previous resurrections of that character). Then, the final d20 roll determines whether it succeeded or failed. That also is applicable with Revivify but, since it's an instant mid-battle spell (only can revive characters that were down for less than a minute), there's no time for contributions and the check is a straight DC 10 (+ additional 1 per each previous resurrection), of course still taking spellcasting modifier into account. Also, after a failed Revivify only a longer cast-time spells may be used (Raise Dead and above) to try again. And if one of those fails, then only 9th level spells can restore the departed (True Resurrection or carefully worded Wish).

I realized in this episode why the show seems to be tricking me into a similar Uncanny Valley reaction... before I couldn't quite describe it. When you watch the players playing the characters, you get more of the player than you do the character. Sam being nervous because he doesn't want Scanlan to die but ALSO having to channel the little hell gremlin is what made it so funny in the first place. The teetering between "Oh God! I need to leave" to "Just one more round..." was hilarious... and you can't have that here in the same way. But also the animation is good, the characters are fantastic... But I have seen this story before in a different way so rewatching it hit the same beats while also not taking me seven years to watch is weird. Its weird. Its very very weird. I like it. 13:40 Mat Mercer CR's DM had a cool and at that point uncommon homebrew to pull back on cheapening death. Everytime you try to resurrect someone using spells such as Revivify or Resurrection, the healer must role a d20 and beat a 10. If you fail, the spell fails and that spell cannot be used for the person anymore. So a revivify could only be attempted once before you pull out Resurrection, then true resurrection. And every time you die you add 2 to your next resurrection attempt. So you role to beat 10 upon your first death, 12 on your second and so on. It makes each death riskier and riskier

On the subject of crits, the most recent campaign I played used a system where if you rolled a nat 20 on a hit roll, it was considered a crit and you got to double your dice. My cleric's most powerful spell was Inflict Wounds (4d10 damage) so getting a crit on that was a miracle. Also this was my first time using d10s, so when I rolled for the second time ever on that spell I had to ask the DM what the zeroes meant. His eyes just went wide as I inflicted 39 necrotic damage on whatever poor monster my cleric was fighting.

When it comes to critical hits, my group does a sort of compromise. We double the dice as normal, but we can't roll below half the die value. For example, my greatsword crits, so I roll 4d6 instead of 2d6. No matter what I roll, anything below 3 (1-2) becomes a 3. This way, good damage is guaranteed, and you still have the chance to deal amazing damage. We once tried the max damage die value, but then my undamaged +4 CON barbarian was knocked unconscious by a wolf that rolled a crit against me. So yes, maxing the die value plus normal damage does guarantee a good crit, but it also means the enemies have a chance of obliterating your character

Our house rules are one regular role, plus a max damage roll, so you don’t get like a regular amount of damage because a low roll doubled ins’t as much damage as the regular attack you just did the hit before so for example: a dagger being 1d4 would be a regular roll+4 (plus your damage bonuses of course) and a d10 would be a d10 roll+10

My rule for crits: Target takes double damage and has to roll a DEX/REFLEX Save (DC 20). If they fail then I’ll roll on a Critical Effects chart (DM Options: Combat & Tactics) thus determining a Critical Effect, which could be anything from minor bleeding (lose 1 hp every 10 rounds until healed or bandaged) to decapitation (which is instant death).
@TheJayFoxx2 жыл бұрын
On the crit topic at the beginning. lol There's standing house rule at my table for all my campaigns that crits should feel like a hard hit and put numbers on the board. So what we do, is you automatically do max dice damage, then roll damage as normal, adding it all together. (So if the damage for a normal hit would be 2d8+5, you'd do 16, then roll the 2d8+5 as well. That way it's not super over powered, (I'm used to running high level campaigns, and actually have a level 20 session coming up soon.), but it's still significant.

The Pumpkinhead fan part of me really likes that shot of Percy’s shadow looking like he’s going to shoot himself once he gets his List done. For those that don’t know Pumpkinhead lore. Pumpkinhead is a vengeance demon. If a person wants him to enact vengeance upon someone, they’re sort of linked. Say the demon is killing someone, the person that summoned him experiences it. And slowly this person starts to become the next Pumpkinhead that will later be buried in the pumpkin patch his body is kept in. Waiting for the next time someone wants to summon them and they’re dug back up. This link also shows in shared damage. So say the summoner is injured, Pumpkinhead experiences the same injury. Otherwise the demon can’t really be stopped. The first movie ends with the revenge seeker having someone shoot him in order to stop the revenge because this was all too much and not what he wanted. So to me that shot of Percy’s shadow makes it seem like Percy has a desire to end himself because by the time the List is finished he’ll be nothing but a monster that should be put down. That’s just how I see it anyway.

Have I had weeks to catch up on this? Yes. Do I still have 2 full days of a 3 day weekend to get caught up? Also yes. Am I going to stay up super late tonight to get completely caught up before I go to bed?? YES

If I’m not mistaken, that how crits worked in 3rd edition.

I said I was done, I was incorrect. When he says "Who's the 6th barrel for?" Go back and look at the shadow. (Sorry, will stop commenting on everything. Just, wow, the show didn't need to go THAT hard, but it did. ) ...okay one more thing, pretty sure that the tune Scanlan plays to distract the guards is an homage to the Pied Piper of Hamelin theme, I forget which classical composer it's from though.

Scanlan: "Yikes! No wonder he's single" Not for long! If you know what I mean

My preferred way of handling crits is that you roll your normal damage, then you add damage equal to a max roll of the damage dice. RAW, you're just supposed to double the number of damage dice you roll and add modifiers once, but I've seen crits like that with two bad damage rolls that come out to less than an average single hit, and that's super disappointing.

I really like that house rule. I may implement it in my next campaign.

since you liked people sending you the parts of the campaign you have already watched in the show!! here's the entire Scanlan Triceratops+Fire Breath combo situation!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5alqaVmaausj9k it's different in how it all fully happened but you can tell exactly how it evolved into what we see in the show

LIGHT SPOILER WARNING ... ... ... This is definitely a long shot but, assuming we do get to hear the voice of the Sun Tree in this show, and as much as I adore Matt's performance on the CR version, I think it would be beyond awesome if they actually got Matthew McConaghey.

I guess Scanlon's lightning spell just needed... a lightning rod. I'll see myself out.

The big thing Critical Role demonstrated about D&D is the fact that your failures are just as important as your successes.

If someone in your life has a ring that is good for two resurrections, that ring is worth an absolute fortune. D&D gold coins are described in the manual as being the size of an American half dollar coin, which would weigh in at roughly 11.5 grams, that would equate to 40 coins per avoirdupois (imperial) pound or 1.215 Troy (how gold is weighed) pounds. That gives us just a hair over 3 Troy pounds of gold. The current gold value is $1860/Troy ounce, and there are 12 Troy ounces to a Troy pound, giving us $22320/ Troy pound or $66960 per resurrection. So your wife's (I assume) ring would have to have a diamond value of $133920 USD to grant two resurrections. With the rule of thumb being that you should spend two months salary on an engagement ring , that would be an $803K salary you have. I have no idea why you'd want to give that up to focus on your KZbin channel, but to each their own.
