Interesting bit of trivia, most TVs in the US cannot tune to channels 95-97 because that overlaps with FM radio frequencies. The FCC used to prevent it, but they stopped caring in the late 90s and it's actually newer TVs that have a greater chance of tuning to the right channel. Channel 1, which is equally hard to find, is also known to work with Famicom on NTSC-J compatible TVs (it sounds like these would be hard to find, but domestic SONY TVs fall under this category).

Despite not being a big Zelda fan myself, I can totally understand why the game is so well-liked. I do remember how kids used to share tips and strategies with other kids, and how immersed into the world of Hyrule that players got as they made their way toward Ganon. It's too bad that we didn't get the microphone option for the NES here; that could've made for some neat gameplay tricks back then... much like we saw for the DS/3DS years later. Using voice to combat enemies was thinking outside of the box back then and is yet another example of Nintendo/Miyamoto creativity.

Peter Skerritt I disagree. It seems like this game is heavily reliant on walkthroughs and I don't see how this game is really well liked. I see the same arguments used for this game and I simply don't see how people can hate Simon's Quest and still praise this game. I'd say, not as a Zelda fan, that A Link to the Past got it correct.

Chippen Dale I've never played COD. Yes, I have played games before the internet. No, I still don't like the original Zelda. I don't consider finding a completely random bush to burn in the wild a challenge. I don't really consider figuring out an items second purpose in one specific place a challenge. I don't like the game at all. Just because I don't like Zelda doesn't automatically imply I'm some kind of child who has hard ons for FPS games. I prefer challenging games, but this was just unfair.
@MrThuralion
@MrThuralion 9 жыл бұрын
FreshprinceObelair Never played the original Zelda but one evening at my summerhouse (it doesn't have electricity) I had an emulator installed on my DS and played the original Zelda blind. I got through most dungeons and found tons of secrets, it's a really addicting aspect and it's honestly not a "challenge" but it's not supposed to be a challenge, just exploration fun.

I have my grandma's copy of a Zelda 1 map... it is seriously annotated. Like, full on almost every single secret (if not all of them, anyway) and pointing out every single dungeon location. And it's a very fragile thing, too, since it appears to have been well-utilized for a good deal of time... If anyone wants pictures, I can take some. I'd scan it but the map's pretty fragile and since it's too large for my scanner I don't want to risk trying to scan it in parts and have the map rip in half from the lid being closed.

TanRu Nomad I remember having to switch coax inputs between the NES and Atari, what a pain. Luckily my dad eventually hooked it up via composite when they got a better TV. Though, after our Commodore 64 died in the mid 90's, I used the C64 monitor (had composite and mono audio inputs) for the NES in my bedroom. The C64 monitor even did well for the N64 when that came out, looked much better than using a VCR to coax input on my 1980's 13" Emerson I had in my bedroom.

I beat Zelda 1 without a guide when I was 8, so it's definitely possible. I had to use graph paper and literally bomb, burn, whistle every possible tile, but I did it (I would have killed for Castlevania II's infinite holy water). Zelda II has enough cryptic stuff I needed a guide though. Most NES-era games are cryptic due to poor translation, so I never held it against Castlevania II. I find it the least frustrating NES Castlevania.

He wore a shirt that has Led Zeppelin on it. I'm not a fan of Led Zeppelin but I've heard one song called "Stairway to Heaven" or "Whole Lotta Love". The song "Whole Lotta Love" was okay, but the one that I never liked the most was the experimental break, that was right up there with "Revolution 9" by the Beatles from the "White Album" and "Susan" by the Buckinghams, because it was too creepy to hear that experimental part.

Back in my days we had replicas of famicom from China in post-USSR. And that is the reason why I have habit to sit like japanese with my legs crossed. By the way ALL this replicas have turbo-buttons and perfectly working laser guns. Also why do you need 95 channel? You just pick any channel and set it to the same frequency that the famicom uses. I managed to set it even on russian TV from 50s.

The most far fetched (pun not intended) one being: sail around the s.s. and you'll come to this island with a house where a man will come out & challenge you (his party being all Mews), beat him & he'll give you mew. 😂 Ah, those were the days. @not2tired
@not2tired 3 жыл бұрын
The stock console internally combines the video signal with audio and Rf modulation. Coax-RCA adapters don't remove the resulting video noise. To clean up the video, you need to remove the modulator and mixer, and install dedicated audio and video output jacks, usually with some sort of simple impedance matching circuit.

I don't understand the TV channel-thing. When I was a kid, what you did was to start a frequency search until you got the video game input. Why couldn't you do this with that TV? Is there some difference between U.S. televisions and European televisions in that regard?
@Fred_PJ
@Fred_PJ 9 жыл бұрын
travis DG edna Exactly, I don't get it either, I guess that the guys aren't used to working with old TV's with RF input. You have to MANUALLY tune (and not auto tune) the frequency in a channel number you want and then memorize it in that channel. The channel numbers are just "slots" where you can memorize (save) any frequency that you setup manually. This means that you can setup the Famicom in channel 1, even in a TV with just a few channels (channel slots).

Honestly, I think it's different between each continent. So it's understandable that Japan would use different frequencies than the United States, or Europe for that matter. It's like, you have to have a special kind of radio here in the United States in order to pick up Japanese radio stations. You feel me?

Tetsamaru PAL tv always had channel settings and you could search the frequency manualy, so you could store a frequency in any channel you wanted. For example I had a TV that only had 10 channels but each channel had its own individual knob to change the frequency this was a +40 years old TV

The Famicom operates on cable channel 95 which is 91.25 MHZ for the video carrier and 95.75 MHZ for the audio carrier. This means you could actually listen to the audio from your Famicom on any radio tuned to 95.75 FM (if you touch the rf output to your radio antenna, of course). This is also pretty close to TV channel 6 (VHF) so if your old tv has a fine tuning knob, depending on just how far you can adjust the fine tuning you might be able to get a system to work on channel 6.

Poki#3 I think you're confusing channels with pre-sets. I'm from the UK so i don't know how it works in NTSC land but we could tune "Channel 1" (the preset when you press 1 on the remote) to UHF Channel 36. I thnk the US might be different but the Japanese frequency allocation was different than the US. The frequency the japanese used for "Channel 3" is on the frequency the US uses for "Channel 95". US TV's that were "cable-ready" might have been able to tune to the higher channels.
@jeremiaas15

I think crypticness works in zelda, because it's the kind of game you can explore and find the solution. Unfortunately, sometimes, the answer is to do something completely off the wall and ridiculous; something which you would have to be desperately stuck on a puzzle, but this somehow adds to the game. for example; when you have to walk through some of the walls in the final palace of Zelda II.
