SHE should have done the film, however, 40 years later, Lucy didn't look half bad.. she could act.. we all know that.. and she got through the songs.. I just remember on the big screen how out of focus Lucy's face was, which was ridiculous of course.. .. but on my LCD screen she seemed normal in a recent TCM screening.. No one knew Landsbury then really.. I mean, Disney movies for the most part? I didn't know her.. except from the Mame score.. but she wasn't on TV then.. it was LUCY LUCY LUCY... who was a huge star then.. I understand Warner's decision..

Lucy was OK but Rosalind Russel was perfect in the first movie. Would have loved to have seen Angela Lansbury in the play and the musical version of the movie.

I think that was done on purpose to try and subtly mask her age .Not being mean or anything because I once heard that that was the explanation

It was a great injustice that they snubbed her for the role of Mame in the 1974 movie musical for Lucille Ball . Maybe it's just as well since it flopped

Angela had the voice. The studio chose lucy. Lucy was fabulous in my opinion. Angela would've been better

What an ego. I mean I like her and all but what makes her think the critics would’ve automatically raved about the film version of MAME if she had been in it? More times than not what works great on stage doesn’t translate on the same on film.
