With colour you can tell a story, with black and white you can write a poem. Each requires discipline and sensitivity to the properties of the image. A kingfisher’s feather has more specificity in colour. It has more descriptors. It belongs more directly to the real world. In black and white it can be more like a suggestion, conveying the idea of flight. Leica makes the best tools for photography. You make the best reviews of Leica.

??? Your math is quite interesting. But even if it was true, due to unprecise or too slow manual focussing you would endup with 80% of not critically sharp images and loose 50-70% of those pixels, also if sharp, what are you going to do with 120MP of boring low contrast BW that looks like 1962? Just more lifeless because grainless?
@williaminbody2054 жыл бұрын
Bernhard Ess Just calculate that there are red, green and blue sensels dedicated to calculating color, those are now all gone and every sensel is just calculating a shade of grey. There is no focus issue, that’s fake news.
@bernios34464 жыл бұрын
@@williaminbody205 In theory this is all nice, but in practice the samples of the M10 mono did not look particulalry rich in detail, some where misfocussed or unsharp. Anyway, I hardly ever miss more resolution, all cameras that I have already offer more details than I really need (24 and 26MP). I had a b&w phase many years ago I almost exclusively shot bw, I now like color as well and i am happy that I can choose :-)
@williaminbody2054 жыл бұрын
Bernhard Ess There’s no doubt monochromatic photography is alive and well, a quick look at Instagram and tour of galleries around the world proves this without argument. The M10 monochrome will produce many of those future photographs. Manual focus lenses using focus peeking and other techniques are very sharp, and autofocus is often abandoned in the studio for final focus. Modern autofocus lenses are inherently less sharp then manual designs. Sorry, just how it is.... can’t change physics.
@bernios34464 жыл бұрын
@@williaminbody205 You are right, it hasn' t lost it's appeal to many. However having an only BW camera limits you - obviously - to only shooting BW. And even if your resolution calclations are correct , most of the time resolution is not an issue anyway. Most photos end up on the internet, where resolution is no issue. The impact of a good photo is rarely or even never created by tiny details or textures, but by the photographic quality. Cartier Bressons BW images have very modest resolution by today's standards. Any converted image from a color digital camera with APSc or even m43 has more resolution. But by any means, if you like that, have fun with the Leica monochrome.

Hey :) Thanks for mentioning our conversation in Zurich! I really like my Fuji X-H1 and it‘s film-simulations such as acros (b&w) or velvia. As I said I couldn‘t live without colour-photography but some pictures don‘t need colour at all. I just did some test-shots with my fuji in b&w at ISO 320, 1600, 12600, 25600 and 51200. Surprisingly the noise isn‘t that annoying until 25600. With 51200 the picture is becoming blurry and noisy. However, the fuji has an APSC-sensor, „just“ 24MP and costs less than a quarter, so I‘m quite happy with my results ;) As you said: the Leica is a niche-camera for enthusiasts and definitely nothing for everyday-use or amateurs. Have fun with your new gear! Jan

25:44, there is a next ridiculous thing, Leica maintains, it is not possible to add a button/function to firmware, to disable that super annoying ISO noise reduction on long exposure times - so the replies on my e-mails. If this could be disabled, the M cameras would be THE cameras for night sky photography, because the M lenses are mechanical focus and have a reliable stop at infinity position, resulting in tack sharp stars. Doing night sky photography, you process noise reduction yourself in post to gain full control. The M makes this impossible, because in body ISO noise reduction can not be disabled. The M and SL are afaik the only two cameras amongst all brands this is not possible. The SL2 offers to disable it (was the first thing I checked in Leica Store ZH), I have no clue if the other Leica models offer it or not. 3rd wave 👋 from Liechtenstein 🇱🇮 to Zürich within one morning ☺️

Normally when you shoot raw there's no noise reduction applied in camera? That's the definition of raw
@rolandrickphotography4 жыл бұрын
LOIKWAX , nope, you didn’t get it what I am complaining about. Noise reduction on long exposure times means, if you eg make a 10 seconds exposure, the camera adds another 10 seconds noise reduction and makes something. If it’s 40 seconds exposure time, M10 adds 40 seconds “noise reduction”. I am annoyed, I can’t disable that. In fact, I do not know, but I am pretty sure this affects also the raw file by making another image shutter closed and calculating the hot spots off the image. And I am also pretty sure this is also applied to the raw files, because you must wait that extra time even if JPG is disabled and you shoot DNG only. Logic implies, this affects also DNGs. - However: you can not DISABLE this on the M10 and afaik also not on SL. Getting reply from Wetzlar, it is impossible to add that to firmware is quite ridiculous... No such problems for all other brands.
@revivevfx4 жыл бұрын
@@rolandrickphotography that's bad. I don't understand how you can't disable NR on a supposedly pro camera haha

LOIKWAX , that’s exactly what I mentioned also to the support in Wetzlar. The problem in cases like this is: you’ll never get in contact to a person in charge of firmware development. And those support departments have a) a set of standard answers and b) no clue of what’s possessed and what not. Answer like “this is not possible due to the sensor” let me expect this. What the f-word has the sensor to do with that noise reduction on long exposure thing? Exactly: nothing 😆🙈. FYC: I develop software since 1988 and for that pretty sure I got fed by lame excuses 🤦♂️

I don’t own a Leica but the advent of the Monochrom has moved me to set my Canon DSLR to B&W, I know you can take raw photos and change to B&W in post and setting to B&W is throwing away the colour information but the point is to take photos that are B&W as an appreciation of the medium. I know the quality won’t be the same as the dedicated Leica Monochrom but I wonder if I can tell the difference. I’d have to hire a Monochrom to be able to tell. But currently I’m enjoying using the Canon in B&W. I’m not taking B&W full time, just when the mood takes me.

Let's do some math for Bayer sensor 1. Bayer sensor do use at most 50 percent of light hitting the sensor and generally 33 percent of light. 2. Out of those 33-50 percent light sensor semiconductor uses less than 50 % of light. Now overall sensor uses 16-25% of light projected by lens. 3. Out of those 16-25 % of light, very efficient Ad converter and image processing can convert only 70-80 percent into really signal and even that signal isnt clean because of noise produced by sensor itself. So modern camera sensors can only convert 10-15% percent light into pure signal compared to amount of light projected by lens.

5:45, treating the shutter blades as protection is totally nonsense and one of the worst photography urban legends ever. The shutter blades are the most sensitive part of a camera and can be destroyed even by a touch of a feather, what will result in a very expensive repair. Even having no Bayer layer (that is the layer making the colours), the sensor itself is never directly exposed and protected by another glass layer. Fuji, Nikon and Sony handling this correctly, the shutter blades are open in power off mode and for that protected. Not so on Canon and Leica (I must assume, this is identical to the S and SL models). Greetings from Liechtenstein to Zürich 👋
@mathphotographer4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the shutter that's why the menu entry says "open shutter". In all other system cameras the sensor is fully exposed when switched off and lens off. In what specifically is the „Leica Fotos“ a very Advanced remote application for the camera? This app can do some things but to me it does not provide the essential things. It’s an app on a very sophisticated Mobil computer (iPhone) but it does not really use it. I would love to see the app do things : like bramping (holy grail Timelapse), focus stacking , connect multiple cameras and sync them, management of the profiles etc .... I would give it a sufficient. And have you ever tested it under stress! It takes 30 seconds to connect and not every try is a hit. That is the most disappointing part. It connects like a modem from 1996, without sound. Have you ever connected a go pro? The camera is shit but the connecting experience is quit good. This is a magnificent product, but the app need more input from the users. And I doubt that this will come, because they don’t use the app. For me as a professional photographer this app is not my choice to go. I rather use camfi pro. This is a app that is ok good. I get very fast annoyed by the app. Also, it deactivates itself after 2 minutes and then you have to shut down the camera to get the connection back. This user experience is not good. If you have any good to say about this app then I am very curious to hear about. 😀 otherwise : excellent video. ! There are some new wireless microtones from rode, the would minimize the room sound on your videos. 😌 thanxs for the excellent work .... but the app comment got me excited ..... 😂.

Yes but in all other DSLMs the sensor is always naked when the camera is switched off and lens unmounted, at the M and M10 etc. the sensor is covered by the shutter. That it really is the shutter can actually be seen in the video in the menu entry I used, says "open shutter" :)

mathphotographer you know,leica's range finder cameras don't need a evf,but as you know the DSLMs the must have the evf,so the shutter are always be opened

Monochrom cameras have no real advantage below ASA 25000. You can convert with virtually no difference. And when you consider the importance of the content relative to the image quality it pales into insignificance. Those who care so much about image quality should really focus on the image content.

Overpriced camera. Open your eyes, this is just marketing. Leica in the digital era is so mediocre
