Mine was the M4 / 35 Summicron V4 that I foolishly sold a decade ago. Take anywhere, fully manual, updated film rewind lever, vs M3/2, rangefinder with 28mm framelines, always reliable - everything I needed, nothing I didn't. Sony (A6000/A6500/A7RII) was my interim 'fix' but I loathed the UI and felt detached from the results. The Q2 Monochrom finally got me back into the fold at the end of last year, and I love its conveniences and its ability to see in the dark... but the M system has had a relentless tug on my photographer heartstrings. No surprise I guess that I bought the most M4-like digital I could 6 weeks ago - the silver M10-P, along with the 50 Summilux ASPH and 28 Elmarit ASPH

I was on Minolta SRT 101 from 1969 to 1999, then I bought my first Leica, a R6.2. After trying some digital cameras from different makes I choose a Leica Digilux 2, which I still own and use. The next step was a M8, and now I've a M240 with a 50 mm Lux glued on. The perfect set up for a press photographer. That's my 'Gold Standard' for sure. Instead of a 28 mm Lux I've a Q and for long tele lenses I've a Lumix GX8. The EVF is very handy on the M240 if I shoot from a low angle, or I use R-lenses. Keep on rolling!

@@oliscurra M8 vs. M240 is like day'n'night. The M240 files are more rich. I haven't had a M9 because I avoided it due to the corrosions problems on the sensor. Olivier, Greetings from Okinawa, Japan. I completely by chance happened upon this video and it instantly became the highlight of my day - at least as that relates to photography. Now don’t think me a blasphemer but I’ve just agreed to trade my Leica M10 and (breathe) my Leica M7 along with some other small accessories in order to trade up for either the Leica M10-R OR the Leica M10-P Reporter. I’m already locked into the M10 M Leitz Wetzler LE through a pre-order. And I’ve been waffling back and forth over having two high res digital bodies. I LOVE B&W imagery so the monochrom is a no brainer for me. And paying a $1000 dollars more for a P with nothing more than a savvy paint job doesn’t feel intelligent. But photography for isn’t about intelligence in the first place. Photography for me is about passion. And all things considered, it’s an exceptionally good paint job. I loved this video and I enjoyed your thoughts about the P. So thank you for this passionate endorsement of the P and please share your thoughts as to which body you might pursue. And I already have GREAT glass. APO 50, 75, & 90. And the Lux 28 1.4. Thank you, Chaps PS I’m a military Chaplain and Educator. Photography is my passion and escape. Hey Chaps, nice to read you again. We've written before on my previous videos. 🙂 First of all, a moment of silence for the M7 trade-in "--------". But hey, you gotta do, what you gotta do. Very cool on the M10 M. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that when you get it. BW is the most honest form of photography in terms of edit for me. I miss shooting BW film. So please remember to come back here once you've got it and let me know, what you think of it. 🙂 Here are my thoughts in brief: 1. I downloaded a few M10-R dng's to test them out and when I slap my presets on them, they look exactly like I've come to expect from my M10-P. 2. When I decided for silver, I was deciding on a paint job between the same camera. Here of course the reporter paint job has you buying a different camera. 3. The immediate things I noticed in the samples, are are my fans kicking in a little bit on my Macbook, largely (no pun intended) due to the increased file size. Which can take a toll on your storage situation, but this is something we as photographers will just have to live with forever... 4.a With increased file size you get double the resolution as well. I think 24MP is more than adequate. Even if I have to crop by 50%, specifically because I don't need the image to be perfect. In fact I look for the rough, the imperfections. In film that meant grain and dust in digital it means less resolution, more digital noise... 4.b That being said, I don't mind the extra 26MP either. I've certainly enjoyed it on my Fuji GFX50R, although that sensor can't be compared fairly. 5. The only area you'd have to maybe test some samples yourself are in high iso situations. More megapixels generally results in more noise. If that doesn't bother, then you can stop right here. For me, I don't care about noise. In fact, I welcome it. If it were me, even though that green does look awesome, I'd go with the M10-R. 🙂

@@oliscurra - Olivier, you’re awesome and I really appreciate and value your thoughts and opinion. I will make a note reminding myself to get back to you wrt my thoughts and experiences with the M10 M. Now given that the bulk of my glass is f2 vs the faster 1.4, the lowlight capability of the new sensor isn’t lost on me at all. And based on my trade in value, an additional $800 scores me the R. But in addition to loving rangefinder shooting, I also love that -for me- I don’t buy Leica and lease it. The resale value is unlike any ecosystem that I’ve over owned. Leica is an investment. So while the R has gained ground because of your shared insights; the 450 LE copies of that Reporter still has my attention. Technology is ever in motion but for Leica connoisseurs I think that maybe this Reporter be the ‘flavor’ choice moving down the road. And dang, but that’s a BEAUTIFUL paint job! Almost hypnotic! Be Blessed,😇

Great review, I particularly like the use of lots of photos which is what it’s all about. I was wondering how you manage with fast glass in bright light with the 1/4000 limit? I enjoyed watching your video from start to finish. Thank you for shooting it & sharing it with us. One thing I am curious about is that your fondness of the M7 & the experience of shooting with a film camera shone through, so did you contemplate going for an M10-D? I don't own a Leica camera (yet), but I have been looking at many videos such as yours, & the thing I am struggling with, is 'which' M10 I'd want to go with. I can make a case for M10, M10-P, M10-D or M10-R! My logic goes something like this: M10: I can get a used one from around £3.5k (almost affordable!), its 'louder' shutter is still quiet enough, & I don't think I'd miss a touch screen M10-P: It has the nice engraving on the top plate(!) M10-D: It has the nice engraving on the top plate too, plus it has the fold out thumb grip which seems like a great aesthetic & yet practical addition to me, plus not having the LCD, it gets you one step closer to that older film experience M10-R: keeping in mind the lenses I'm most likely to use on any M10 would be 35mm or 50mm (probably same as 90% of users), then having the greater res will be beneficial when it comes to cropping, also, when shooting for B&W, the extra res would be beneficial - for example if you shoot something red only one in 4 photosites on the sensor will be recording any significant light, so the higher res will help offset that somewhat, while still retaining full colour info for post processing...I don't think I've explained it that well, but hopefully you catch my drift. So, the question is really, if you were starting out getting your first Leica, which M10 would you go for now & why? Do you think you would miss the LCD too much on the M10-D?....I like the idea of the M10-D, but it feels a bit of an expensive gamble!
@oliscurra3 жыл бұрын
Hello Lawrence, I love it when I get seriously massive comments. 🙂 A lot of youtube for me is to do about the persons in the comments section. So with regards to the M10-D. For me personally I knew I would never get an M10-D. The patience required for and slow-down of film, is really a silver lining thing. If I could have it, I would have it much quicker. The beauty of film for me is really about the result as opposed to the process. Having a digital camera and the annoyance of having to wait till I'm home to see my photos, will not work for me without the benefit of then having a negative to hold in my hand... I've got preview switched off on every digital camera I own, I don't chimp, I do give my models my camera at the end of a shoot so they can mark their favourites. In terms of which M10, I've looked through your points on each camera, and if it was me I'd go with the M10. Any of the price difference goes to M11 funds. I've not shot with the M10-R, however 50MP is great if you really need to print extremely large. The do not crop much and when I do, I do not think twice about cropping to the point of deteriorating quality. So much about my aesthetics is a deterioration of quality. I embrace the pixels in this regard. The issue I have with 50MP, is HDD space. It just eats it up. 50MP means two times as many hard drives, double the cost, double the ports etc... It is awesome to zoom into 100% with my GFX-50R files, however the sensor in that thing is awesome as well. I hope that helps a little. 🙂 What do you shoot nowadays?

@@oliscurra thanks Oliver for taking the time to give a personal response. I was on the Canon Eos system for 3 decades until the end of 2017 & then bought a Sony A7R3 (got fed up waiting for Canon to bring out something that I wanted to upgrade to from my last Canon - the 5D2). Technically, the A7R3 is awesome - its a very impressive camera, however, I don't personally find it that much 'fun' to shoot with.....especially as I found myself increasingly shooting with old manual lenses, & because the A7R3 doesn't have a lock on the Exposure compensation dial it gets knocked easily, so the work around it to shoot in Manual exposure mode....so i had this technically close to state of the art camera that over half the time I was using in a very manual way. this got me thinking about a more appropriate camera that would be more 'fun' to use & shoot in a very manual way. Naturally I started thinking about leica's, but also Fuji GFX. In March 2020, I ended up getting a used 50r from a local store. So I am shooting 50r & A7R3 alongside each other. If the subject matter benefits from long lenses, AF, stablization, then I grab the Sony, for everything else (which is maybe 75-80%) then I grab the 50r. However, that yarning for a Leica hasn't gone away! I find it interesting reading your take on the M10-D...it's a little different to the way i see it. I started with Film, developed & printed my own shots in the 80's, while I like the look of film, I don't have the time these days to mess about developing & printing, for developing & scanning. The convenience of digital is too strong a pull for me, but I sometimes miss the simplicity of the film shooting experience. That is why the M10D appeals to me. I can certainly understand & appreciate your different point of view though. For me I think the M10D might be 'the best of both worlds' for me....but for you, it seems it may offer the 'worst of both worlds'....& I had not looked at it like that before at all, so thank you for giving me a different perspective on it!

Does the M10P dial have a stop or does it spin around freely? I relied on the stop on my M6 shutter speed dial to help me feel my way through the settings.
@oliscurra2 жыл бұрын
In that case you’ll be relying on the in viewfinder view when using the dial like that as it doesn’t have a stop.

Plus 1 for the placement of the on and off switch ... wish they had that on the SL2S .

My wish for the M11 would be for a Hybrid Viewfinder to aid in focusing such as can be found in the Fuji X-pro-1 / X100 etc.
@oliscurra3 жыл бұрын
OMG if they did that!!! It would be awesome. I mean their SL2-S EVF is so cool. I love it. To be able to switch between analog and digital, that would just be the best. What's your main camera at the moment?
@Tyrael2b3 жыл бұрын
@@oliscurra My "main camera" (sometimes makes me money camera) is a Canon 5D-IV but am looking for something smaller for my personal work. I have pretty much decided on a Leica, don't know what to get through, I am deciding between (M10-D (M10-D (my favourite option - like the idea of the digital darkroom / moment of discovery) or P or maybe an M10 monochrome) - this is of course only posable if my risky stocks head for the moon. I have the M4 and the Leica SL. Also the little X1. The cameras I use the most are X1, SL and finally M4. The X1 is razor sharp, small and has AF, so it is perfect for traveling. The colors and bokeh are awesome. The M4 looks the best, but it is tricky to use the RF at times, e.g. when your subject is in the shadows or when there are lots of things with a similar shape, like a forest. The SL is my daily camera, when I am not traveling, since I can attach macro lenses, my fantastic old Zeiss Contax lenses, new AF lenses and also the little M lenses, It also seems a lot more durable than the Ms. My brother bumped his M and had to send it in for a repair. It cost $1500. They look and feel durable, but really are not.
@oliscurra3 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting point about the perceived durability of the M cameras. I am certain they will last you a long time, but they do need servicing. My very first DSLR ever (a canon 400D made out of plastic) I am certain will never need servicing. I just recently bought an SL2-S - not sure if you saw my initial review on it. It's a very cool system and camera. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Great video! I use Leica glass but on a Fuji xt3. The focus peaking, film sims and dr400 hilight retention mode marries great with the leica optics and superior manual focus via the focusing tab. Would love to get a leica monochrom body though!

Gold standard camera for me would be the leica m3 or nikon f2. both amazingly well built cameras! but my most used film camera right now is my leica M7! congratulations on the m10P I have the older mp 240 in black.

+Robert Chestnut I’ve never actually shot an M3. Is it really that amazing or is it more the fact that it set the standard and the “more recent” offerings like the M6, M7, M although not necessarily as ground breaking are actually better experiences? The F2, what a total beast! 🙂 I have the FM2, it is by far the most battered camera I’ve ever own and it still shoots absolutely awesome.

@@oliscurra I have owned quite a few m cameras and the m3 is the only one I would not sell! the finder is amazing. the finder on my m3 blows my m6ttl .85 finder out of the water! the only downside to the m3 is the lack of 35mm frame lines. but 90mm lenses are easy easy to focus because the focusing patch is huge too! people always complain about the loading system but I have never had any issues loading with the spool. In fact I have miss loaded my m7 and m6 a few times. If you find a good late serial number m3 you will be amazed. the double stroke ones are interesting but there were some changes to the finder eye piece in the later models. the only caveat it no meter in my opinion.

also My f2 literally fell off a mountain once and still works great. if you like the f2 you will probably like the leica m3. they seem the most comparable in build quality out of all my cameras.

@@robertchestnut3331 Interesting. I don't know many persons here in Switzerland who are in to Leica. I will need to see if the store has one I could "rent" out or so. My first film camera was the Voigtländer Bessa R3M. A camera quite close to my heart. One of the things I always enjoyed was it's 1:1 viewfinder. I'm looking forward to checking out the M3. Got any particular lens that finds its way to the camera most of the time?

@@oliscurra I mostly use a summicron 50mm v5 or a 90mm pre asph summicron on the m3. I would like to try a zeiss 50mm sonnar f1.5.I hear that lens is really good on an M3. If you liked the 1:1 finder on the voigtlander the m3 I am pretty sure is the closest you will get with leica to that. I had a voigtlander r2m before my m6 by the way. I always felt it had more eye relief.

“Feels like every film Leica ever made.” Except for the M5 😂 which I feel is still a unique kit. The M240 is similar to the M5 in that way. The ISO selector on the M240 is better than the dial on the M10, hell, they even brought it back on the M11… kinda. Plus, I prefer the warmer colors on the M240 over the M10.

@Oli No, my daily is a M10P and a M240 as a back up. I have a M2 for film. I have been looking into a M5 because it's so different from the other Ms. But my ideal kit would be a M10D with a MA/MP. Can't decide between the stealthy MA or a brassed MP.

@@oliscurra Well, that’s the question.. In this current environment, portrait photography is a bit unstable at the moment. With that said, the 50mm Lux and 75mm lux are on my list. For street and landscape photography, I’m looking at the new 35mm APO cron and 50mm APO Cron. The biggest importance for me is finding my look, so to speak.
@oliscurra3 жыл бұрын
@@_willfunk_ Those are some touch choices to make. 35 & 75 go nicely together. 35 & 50 too, but the difference in field of view will be a little more nuanced. 24 or 28 goes nicely with 50. When I used to shoot weddings, I had a 35mm glued to my canon 5dMark iii and most of the time it was the 85mm on the Canon 6d, which would get swapped out for the 24-105 just for the 24. Aaah lens choices. Tough but fun. When you speak of finding your look, what are the looks of others who inspire yours?

Video? You are wishing for a different camera altogether.
@oliscurra Жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, clearly I’m no expert in camera engineering. However when I say video, do not picture the Sony A7Siii which is a video powerhouse through and through. Picture the predecessor to the Leica M10 series - the M240. For me, it would be awesome if I can get 10 mins worth of video. At the time of the M10-P 4K was the hot resolution. If Leica had just gone with 1080P with a max gram rate of 25fps, that would’ve been enough. I imagine walking around Rome as a tourist, taking photos and then 2 mins of some video with the M10-P instead of having to reach for my iPhone for that.
