Review: Leica M10-P Edition

It may seem odd that I'm reviewing the Leica M10-P since I've already done a comprehensive review of the previous M10 and an unboxing video of the M10-P; but I thought I'd do a real world test and shoot with it on the streets. Is there a difference between the standard M10 and the mid-cycle M10-P model? Yes. The shutter dampening system changes the way the camera feels. I prefer the 'feel' of the M10 without the dampening vibration, but I do prefer the quieter shutter sound of the M10-P. I don't think either will make a difference in your images itself, just the way it makes you feel when shooting with it. If being super quiet is your priority, then the M10-P is the way to go and probably the future of the M body shutter mechanism. Touch screen is nice but is no reason for anyone to upgrade. Overall the latest M10 body compared to the previous M240 is a huge improvement in terms of size, feel and function. I can't wait to see what the M11 will bring to the table. Hopefully improved wifi and the addition of BlueTooth, and perhaps a hybrid EVF/OVF like Fujifilm's X-Pro and X100 series? Is that too much to ask Leica?

I read that a hybrid EVF/OVF with the rangefinder mechanism (which needs space) was resulting in compromised OVF and EVF. Hence they didn't have a hybrid system there. Fuji does not have a rangefinder unit in their cameras and hence they have enough space to accommodate.

Is there a stop on the shutter speed dial or does it spin freely? That is, can one feel where the speed is set or count from a rest position to another setting?

Yes, the m10p shutter is much quieter but your m7 seems sound much better. You point out what I am thinking of, I wanna purchase both film m and digital m for my street shooting.

Yes I’d love to own a digital M as well, but currently not within my budget nor my needs. I’ll stick with Fujifilm for digital, and Leica M for film

@@bigheadtaco The fujifilm x100/xpro series are good. But I find that it isn't suitable for everyone. It's beautifully build with a vintage look. But underneath the look, the camera is packed with high-tech which aren't everybody wishes. It just seems the camera itself does a lot of things that make me can't enjoy the process. What I really want is a leica m9 with high ISO capability.

Compare the GFX100S with the Panasonic S1 and X-H1...! S1 apparently has the most dampened shutter, though they made the claim before the new GFX - also has 1/320 synch. I hope to see a Foveon-based M10-Polychrom/Monochrom

Well, I can just see in your face that you are just happy playing with those cameras! Ultimately, I still think film leicas are better tool to shoot with. I Still have M8 but without battery power, I cannot shoot! It happens all the time! When I want to use it, it just takes one shot then goes to sleep! I guess M10 has Bigga capacity batt.... I know the M10 battery is smaller than the previous M240, but most aren’t using live view very often so it lasts pretty long. I’ve never ran out of battery during an outing. However, if I owned one, I would definitely have a second back up just in case.

Take, any take on why Leica ditched the Black Paint finishing on the new Leica M ? Do really miss the brassing or, "character" so to speak, on the Black Paint. The Black Chrome I believe is more durable, but it's lack luster

I think they save the black paint on more limited run cameras. Not everyone understands the cult status of black paint. Many new Leica shooters, especially those who only shoot digital will most likely hate black paint.

@@bigheadtaco So how do you explain the M-P typ 240 ? I think the regular M typ 240 was also in Black Paint. I beg to differ, I bet quite a significant amount know. When one plans on splurging this much for a camera, I'd think most would do an "extensive" research. My educated guess is that they did this for durability reasons.

If you ever chat with a Leica rep, tell them to tell HQ to put that shutter (and VF) into the next 35mm body. It should be an easy fit. It would be even more amazing if it could be automated, which would make such a camera the most silent 35mm focal plan body ever.

Depending on what you want out of your body. As i mentioned, if you don’t care about touch screen and the new shutter, then I’d say stick with the M10. Currently I only know one colleague who upgraded because he really wanted the quieter shutter. However, the rest of my M10 friends are sticking with the original :-)

I said the same thing @Noealz. Then a mate let me play with his M camera and game over. Now I have an m10 and an M-A with 4 lenses between them! If you want something you will find a way like Karim said. I stopped buying nicer clothes, didn't eat out, stopped buying 'wanted' items only needs, and sold all my other things that would help me fund my leica lust. It did happen over a couple of years but look at me now... happy as can be 😊👌

Completely different cameras. The Ricoh GR cameras are point and shoots with leaf shutter lenses. This has a focal plane shutter with metal blades. It’s much harder to make it quiet and dampened.

Akhyar Rayhka the Ricoh GR and most leaf shutter equipped cameras (Fujifilm X100, Leica Q) will be quieter than the Leica M10-P. The previous M240 was irritatingly loud. This is a huge improvement for Leica :-)

1:35 why do people put the camera close to the mic when talking about the shutter sound? Microphone = picks up sound and makes it LOUDER... to really demonstrate the shutter sound keep it like 3 to 5 meters away from the mic to simulate shooting distance! I really don't get it...

It’s not necessarily the volume, but more the tonal quality of the shutter. You can hear it’s dampened. I used the film Leica for context, since my guess is many digital M shooters know what a film Leica shutter sounds like.

Serious if tut guys buy the Leica safari m10 p you will save so much money. I bought the m240 safari at the time and it was well well worth it. Probably the best investment ever. I sold mine for almost double the amount once the m10 was announced. When you buy the safari just remember that they always surge in price due to how limited they are

I am a diehard (D)SLR guy...………….the bigger the better. The D3 and F3 are my personal favorites. I am very proudly "old-school", and, while I know that it's not always a direct correlation, I find the weight of an item (cameras, tripods, watches, pens, etc.) to be reassuring and a sign of craftsmanship and quality. I know it's all about the lenses, however, I held a Leica film rangefinder last year, for the first time, and for the $$$ they command, I wasn't all that impressed. All that being typed, dope photos and review though.
