Thanks dudes. The X factor for me with Brian’s songs is his use of modulation. Combining that complexity with such a strong pop sensibility is rare, and kind of what my channel’s all about.

Hi guys! Long time no see. I was so happy to see that you did this video. I've been absolutely loving the Lemon Twigs since Everything Harmony came out. That was the record that finally sold me on them, and I do favor the three more recent records. I'm just all about songcraft and less about quirkiness (i.e. I am boring). I've come to enjoy the first two records, but everything since 2020 is five stars for me. Absolutely love their writing and playing. Great to hear your thoughts and what songs you especially love. Matt, you fit in so well! My ranking: 5) Do Hollywood (4) 4) Go to School (4) 3) Songs for the General Public (5) 2) A Dream is All We Know (5) 1) Everything Harmony (5) The top three may move around. Songs for the General Public might actually have the most songs in a hypothetical top 10 for me. - Shannon :)

A dream is all we know is the album with all perfect songs, and that´s what is weird these days. A journey through the most compelling years in pop and rock history, second half of sixties and early seventies, and the perfection of baroque pop. Is a ten plus five, for only getting in this exclusive field of Pet Sounds, Revolver and Oddesey and Oracle, and many great singles of that time. Doing it perfectly, besides, and sounding like no one else, even in that times. Everything Harmony is their first really cohesive album, with a perfect concept, and allmost all songs are gems. Is the perfection of simplicity, and a not expected soft great early seventies revival, when rock got a perfect sound, between production and songwriting. is a ten too. Go to school is the hidden piece of art of the Twigs. An extravagant emotional journey through adolescent symbols of guilt, shame, rage and loneliness, in a musical that may seem strange because Shane is a monkey, as if it were not strange that Tommy was a pinball wizard. It is obviusly a ten too, only because their is nothing else like this album. It has probably the most hauting pieces of music composed by the Twigs. Do Hollywood is the genius getting out of the bottle, when the weird polyrritmic and imaging evoking songs went out, only for capturing the attention of everyone who was not expecting nothing like that. It is simple, is the most succesfull Twigs album until today, Sometimes, the wierdest is the most popular. Two skinny and very young virtuous, showing an encyclopedic knowledge on pop and rock, just because they can do it. It has no sense and some weak songs, but that doens´t matter. It is obviously another ten album. And finally, the album with te most perfect progresive rock and roll songs in decades, with all the energy of a perfect power pop glam rock enthusiasm, but is not perfect, some songs doesn´t work that well as the others. It is the one with the best songs, but is the only album that doesn´t get the ten, but reachs the 9.5.

I really dig the new twigs. I saw a review on all music and they made a lot of comparisons to beach boys Which is totally valid. They went as far as saying that “ in the eyes of the girl,” sounds like a faithful rewrite of Brian Wilson/the beach boys “in my room.” I don’t know if I would go that far but I mean, it’s their review/opinion. And they said: “ how can I love her more?” Sounds like something from The Beach Boys wild honey, which seems like a random album to mention (they didn’t specify what song they just said something). Everything harmony is my favorite, but this one probably comes in second place. I’ve gotta listen to the rest of their catalog though 😂

1. A Dream is All we Know- 4.5 stars (Sweet Vibration is the only weak track) 2. Everything Harmony- 4 Stars (When Winter Comes Around is my favorite Lemon Twigs song) 3. Do Hollywood- 4 Stars (unfocused but still cool and interesting) 4. Songs For the General Public- 3.5 Stars (questionable lyrics at times but still a charming record with a handful of good songs) 5. Go to School- 3 Stars (Small Victories is the best song but the rest is not for me, still impressive though) The new tracks are more accessible and simple lyrically but they masterfully accomplish what they were going for with that early to mid sixties sound/style in a very authentic way. Excited to see what they do next!

I really enjoy this group/duo. I first heard of them due to a Reddit user recommending them to me and I've become a fan ever since. Great vintage sound that's eclectic and varied harkens back to the 60s-70s (and even 90s alt-rock/power pop) but with enough personality and weirdness to make them unique (unlike other bands who copy from the past). I've enjoyed all their albums so far including the new one. If I had one complaint, their vocals can be a little awkward and stiff sometimes, but damn, they definitely know how to record and arrange harmonies. Their music videos are great too. I'm weird with this group that the singles are usually my least favourite songs on the albums. They have some great album tracks. I hope these guys one day reach more of a mass-audience without having to compromise their sound. They deserve it. Both brothers are only a few years older than me so they still have plenty more to contribute.

What a great surprise! I've really grown to love The Lemon Twigs a lot since first hearing them and definitely consider myself a big fan. I have pretty well relistened to all the albums this past week anyway just because I was so excited for the new one. Even with that I am still not really sure exactly how I would rank them especially with the Everything Harmony vs A Dream is All We Know - I've already gone back and forth a few times, my initial thoughts would have ADiaWK at the bottom but I'm less sure now that I've revisited it a bit. Go to School has taken me a bit longer to "get", actually relistened to it this morning - pretty shocking (but cool) they made something like this as their second album. I do know Songs for the General Public is my favourite and Do Hollywood is second. Regardless nothing below a 4.5.

Its funny though, bc I think A Dream Is All We Know actually injected some of the energy that was largely missing for me in Everything Harmony. Like I definitely enjoy that record but I'm still kinda surprised that it was the one where they really blew up. It's pretty low-key tonally, although it has its moments. Not to say Joe and Jason aren't killing it as a duo, but I think their individual differences play off each other when there's a third voice to weigh in. I've been following the band since the 1st record and my biggest problem is they never seem to capture the spontaneous energy of their live performances. Brian is a brilliant lead guitarist and it's just not captured on the albums enough. Check out his solo on the 'Jools Holland Performance' of 'Small Victories'. 'Songs for the General public starts so strong but the drop off from track 8 onwards spoils it for me, the final track 'Ashamed' is such a low key ending. Theres a break in that song with the feedback and then for me the drums should have come crashing possibly with a guitar solo. Anyway my list is: 1. Do Hollywood 2. Go to School 3. A Dream Is All We Know 4. Everything Harmony 5. Songs for the General Public. Also are you guys going to do a 'Wilco' ranking soon?

I think that the Lemon Twigs have become better songwriters over the past few years, and I found their two most recent albums significantly more catchy/interesting than the first three. A Dream Is All We Know will probably be the best “1960s psych pop record released in 2024,” but that will only go so far from someone like me. (I don’t hold the belief that music peaked throughout the mid-60s and the 70s, and that everything afterwards is inherently inferior.) I’m only truly acquainted with their latest 2 albums (though I have sampled them all) but if I had to attempt a ranking, it would be: 1. Everything Harmony (2023; 4 stars - that’s my ceiling for this band; I mostly now see them as a very proficient cover band; I don’t think there’s anything unique about what they’re doing, and I don’t find their story as a band compelling) 2. A Dream Is All We Know (2024; 4 stars - punchier and more direct, but tracks 2, 9 and 11 are just okay, and this will likely be an honorable mention rather than a genuine top 50 record) 3. Do Hollywood (2016; 3 stars; meh) 4. Songs for the General Public (2020; 3 stars) 5. Go to School (2018; 2.5 stars - way too long and tedious)
@curly_wyn6 ай бұрын
