The lenses to buy for Nikon Z50 and ZFC

Totally agree, Nikon does not need to make a lot of DX lenses when they can use the FX lenses.

I use my crops in 1 of 2 ways. 1. Extra Reach (in all honestly stepping an FX Z into a DX crop yields equally impressive results...just been trained throughout history to use a DX body I guess). 2. Smaller and lighter travel kit. That's pretty much the Z50 (1) and Zfc (2) in a nutshell as you explained. I still would like a DX with IBIS. I shot for decades without it but now crutch on it a lot. I put the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 on the Zfc and had to catch myself and set up the tripod since there is no VR in the lens like the 3 native Z mount. Not a deal breaker by any stretch and it is an impressive "budget" lens. Your comments are spot on. Once we are past the two next focal lengths on the roadmap, It's fairly well fleshed out on the DX side. Whatever else you may need has a great FX equiv. I still love my 17-55mm f/2.8 and use it often with the FTZ but nobody would shell out today what it would cost to produce such a lens. The consumer if they are going to upgrade to a lens like that should go full frame and 24-70mm S at that point is my thinking. Enjoyed the chat!

I have the 28mm lens, I feel like the viltrox 23mm is too close to what I have in terms of focal length. What do you recommend as a second lens? Maybe a manual lens?

I think you should seriously consider the newly launched Sigma 56mm 1.4, which is a very tiny but extremely powerful lens, ie if you want a short telephoto lens......if you want to go wider then consider the Sigma 16mm or the viltrox 13mm lenes

I own the Z50 and it is also excellent for macro photography I also own the Z6. The Z mount 105mm macro is incredible and is 157mm on the Z50. The extra reach for macro is also very valuable.

I'd rather Nikon make some good yet small prime lenses for apsc. I am eyeing the Zfc for street photography and only available lenses specifically made for it are the ones from Viltrox. To keep the whole system small. If I were to use the FX lenses, might as well use the Z6 or Z7, which to be honest aren't very big in comparison.

Great video! I have a Z50 and I also own a 35 mm f1.8 F mount lens. I am planning to get one more lens, mainly looking to photograph my kids in indoor and outdoor setting. Ideally looking for a focal length longer than 35 mm which I currently have. What options would you recommend? I am interested in sigma 56mm f1.4 dcdn lens or Nikons 50mm f1.8 (full frame) lens. Worried that the 50mm might be more focal length. I am also interested in some zoom lens options but don’t want to spend a lot, as I am more of a casual photographer. What would you recommend?

Hi! I was wondering if you could help me out with the following dillema: I'm a beginner with a Z fc camera. I'm looking at getting a zoom lens but I'm not sure which one I should get. I'm torn between the Nikon Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR and the Nikon Z 24-70mm F/4.0 S-line. I know that the crop factor turns the 24-70 into a 36-105mm lens, but the 24-70 seems to be future proof, if I'd ever change to a Z6/7. What would you recommend?

Unless you’re looking for a super zoom, it makes sense to get the 24 70 f4. Great close up focusing and built too. Also, it’s got a metal bayonet/ mount (unlike the DX zoom), which makes one feel better. Just get a 3rd party grip for the ZFC.

ZFC looks good for vlogging. Nikon need some affordable wide angle lenses for vlogging. a 16mm pancake similar to Canon will be a good option. fo DX maybe 12mm something like that.

Any long Lens will be difficult to hold with the ZFC. But I guess you will handle that…The Z 24 to 120 is a stunning Lens. Very very good long term spend overall. Go for that. Don’t go for DX lenses. You will get almost 200mm with this Lens on a crop body. Which is amazing!

It would be nice if Nikon had more DX lenses, especially longer ones. But as you say they have done a lot in 3 years. Each lens they release helps the system as a whole. Imagine what we will have in 2 more years. How many lenses can a company keep in their range, ie manufacture and stock?

I like your reviews very much. I have a question. I heard everybody to say DX body with FX lens has an extra reach. Is it really true? Next DX body with DX lens also has an extra reach? I mean to say Z mount DX 18-140 lens will be equivalent to 27-210? If yes then what is point of making DX lenses?

Simply put, DX lenses are smaller, cheaper and lighter compared to ff lenses of equivalent reach.

Hi Frames - Agreed. I like the DP Review video on the Zfc but commented how the portrayal that there were not enough lenses and "no" third party support was very disingenuous. There are plenty of lenses for this system, and the Viltrox lenses are excellent 3rd party support making primes much faster than Nikon has done for DX specific lenses. I used my 70-200 2.8 S lens to take photos of my brothers son playing soccer and they were show stoppers - all the parents wanted copies and shots of their kids once they saw them. It's true that the lens is a $2500 lens which is 2.5X the price of the Z50 body that I was using, but I wanted to use the Z50 over my Z6II because I wanted the 300mm angle of view to get closer to the players and it worked like a charm - the IQ is awesome. are those 3rd party lenses manual focus or they have Autofocus. i think about 3rd party lenses most of the people are correct because Sony have way more options to choose when it's cone to third party lenses. i remember yesterday someone commented under a Z9 review that he will consider Z9 for his video production as it going to have 8k 60fps N-Raw option most of the Mirrorless only have 8k 30fps at the moment. but he said his decision will be based on how much 3rd party support is there for Z mount.

I would spend the money on the 50mm. Brilliant lens and lighter. The Viltrox is nice too but will be almost 130mm perspective in terms of focal length. Meaning quite zoomed in. If you want that zoom, go for the Viltrox.

The purpose to have a DX camera is to have small size lenses, zoom and primes. Canon does not have any APS-C camera in their RF system lineup so they make only fullframe lenses with IS build in as their below 2000 euro bodies doesn’t have IBIS. So they take this situation into consideration. Nikon is building a DX body without IBIS but their FF bodies does have IBIS. Only the FF telelenses has VR so they can have small FF lenses, example 24-70 Fmount had VR, but the 24-70 doesn’t. The consequence is that the FF lenses are a bad fit for their DX, as DPreview said you have now an unstabilized system. Olympus has an IBIS in all their bodies, so they keep VR out of their lenses to keep them small. Panasonic, which also uses m43 system, does not have IBIS in all of their bodies so most of their lenses has VR. Nikon is for us not the other way, so I should not look for workarounds. Nikon introduced this DX camera’s without a good strategy. The consequence is now that in Japan Nikon is not in the top 10 of most sold cameras. Be aware that most sold cameras are all cameras in the prize range of z50 and Zfc, so even the Japanese consumer is choosing other brands like Sony and Canon, leaving Nikon. Canon has an EOS-M lineup that cannot be upgraded to the RFmount so still this system is the most sold. This is prove that at this price point people don’t care to put FF-lenses on small APS-C. For me I will be a Fujifilm customer for the next 5 years buying their lenses and camera. Maybe in 8 years Nikon will have a couple of decent DXlenses are a DX body with IBIs which can be used with their big non VR FFlenses.
