I would have to agree that your skills and knowlage can really lighten the amount of gear you need. I can with my skills take very little gear into the woods and be just fine.

I often carry a small journal with different techniques noted in it, such a certain knots. Just a quick reference. I’m getting older and some things fade from memory if I do not regularly practice them.

UKG - Really enjoyed this thought-provoking video. Both maxims are true. I also see EDC gear as emergency tools. [As an example - even though an individual may have the knowledge & skills of making cordage from natural materials... in an emergency one often does not have time to collect & process the material needed. By having good-quality cordage in your kit, one can respond in a timely manner and increase the likelihood of a positive outcome to the situation.] Personal EDC gear choices are subject to many variables (i.e., purpose, skill set, environment, availability, budget, etc.); however, no matter how good the gear is - if one does not have the knowledge & skills on how to utilize each tool - they end up being wasted and a potential disadvantage in a challenging situation. Happy Trails! 🇺🇸 🏕 🌲

Nice thought provoking piece. I pretty much agree, as your experience increases you realise you're capabilities and what gear works and what you don't really need. Cheers 🍻

Another great video. My age and experience usually dictate what I carry. Because of these videos I've fallen down the parang rabbit hole again. Lol

GB2 (‘the grey bearded green beret’) once said that someone in good physical shape and with the right knowledge could go into the woods ‘fully primitive’ (no gear) and survive on his own in one of his youtube videos.

It should be the more you know the more correct you carry.

My motto is “the less I know the less I carry” because if I don’t know how to do anything, what am I going to do with tools? 😳

Of course the more you know the less gear you need.

Yeah for sure. People are too narrow minded. I try not to think of my tools by their name, “this is a file”. I like to break it down, this is a rectangular piece of hard metal with 90 degree corners, and that opens my mind up to different things it could be used for instead of only shaving metal

I usually carry more than I need because I’m an idiotic gear junkie that likes to play in the forest. 😊

Ha ha ha, the more you know the more you need!!. If you know how to use a compass, ferro -rod, GPS, axe bow tarp etc, if you take them. If you dont know how to use the items don't take them. Bushcrafters claim to know more about survival but take way more survival gear than thru hikers. Don't need a knife for survival, just good GPS and warm jacket, water bottle, making fire is not a priority. Most survival situation is when people get lost and end up needing rescue.
