Coming up... this song was written to be part of a rock opera that legendary guitarist Pete Townshend of the Who wanted to make into a film but he couldn’t get it off the ground so he threw it on his band’s next album which happened to be the all time classic Who’s Next! It became one of the most powerful rock anthems ever. So powerful that the legend’s iconic scream was so piercing when the band first heard it they thought their singer Roger Daltrey had gotten into a fistfight with the engineer. It’s a song that is about a revolution but unfortunately, life has now imitated art because the lesson in this song has still not been learned 50 years later… We need to figure this out now! The story of the 70s classic Won’t Get Fooled Again by the Who is next!

Pete Townshend, one of the elite members of the senior aristocracy of British Rock, is a fascinating music icon. His colorful career has revealed multiple personality layers. He was an angry Mod with art school arrogance,
He was a benevolent disciple enlightened by mysticism- on a quest to realize the absolute oneness of God. When he hit the stage, he unleashed a guitar-shattering fury-producing sound that was so loud & bombastic, it made the ears of his bandmates bleed.
And then… a mild-mannered Pete Townshend can segue into a soft-spoken conceptualist who composed three ambitious Rock Operas- Tommy, Quadrophenia, and the discontinued Lifehouse.
What Pete envisioned for Lifehouse was a project that would become a film about a futuristic world where people are enslaved by the government… sound familiar? But ultimately saved by a massive rock concert.
Lifehouse, however, did not get the financial support to be completed, so the enterprise was scrapped in favor of putting the music Pete had written for the opera onto a new album for The Who.
The inspired music intended for Lifehouse, became Who’s Next, the record that many regard as The Who’s opus. The first track on Who’s Next is the masterpiece "Baba O’Riley", that was set to be the opening piece for Lifehouse.
The last track on Who’s Next was another exceptional showpiece titled “Won’t Get Fooled Again” that was designed to be the exciting conclusion for Lifehouse. Won’t Get Fooled Again was constructed into a 3 part storyline over 8 minutes & 36 seconds, with each instrumental section representing the thickening of the plot.
The first part of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” is the ‘calm before the storm…the bubbling of a revolution that intensifies with the evolution of lyrical uprising. The overthrow of existing power is symbolized in “Won’t Get Fooled Again" by the permeating sounds of a ‘cutting edge’ synthesizer.
In fact, Pete programmed a mixture of human traits into a synthesizer and used it as the grounding instrument throughout the song. Townshend had been reading Inayat in Eye at Khon’s The Mysticism of Sound and Music, which addressed spiritual harmony!

I grew up hearing The Who but never really connected with them. Then, one day, my 14-year-old daughter came up to me and said, “Dad, The Who is on their 50th anniversary tour. Can we go see them?” After I wiped a tear from my eye, I said I would look at ticket prices. We got floor seats at Wells Fargo arena in Philadelphia and had a great time. Since then, my daughter and I have bonded over classic rock, attending concerts and even building guitars together. I am a blessed man. Oh, and Quadrophenia has become my most played album.

Led Zeppelin's John Bonham was the true lead drummer. That's what separated him from everyone else. Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones both agreed that the best thing that happened was Bonham otherwise they wouldn't have been much different then their first group yard birds. John's drummingstyle was unheard of in the 60s when he started playing with different angles... Look up Bonhams lead drum style.

I guess Townsend predicted the Carter and Clinton Eras, as the Clinton's in '72 were actually in the McGovern primary campaign; though as mentioned, Townsend should have ceded Hoffman a few more seconds at least, and the fantastic talent of Woodstock security chief Wavy Gravy, and his "please force" deserves real study and respect and not cynical dismissal. That said, getting fooled again, I feel is best exemplified by the "Environmentalist" factors doing elitist things like boosting Bay Area rents, causing housing shortages and homelessness with the support of too many Woodstock fans. You see the liberal elite repression best at the local level, like Hillary's Chappaqua NY.

I've been a fan of The Who & their music since 1982. I was introduced to their music, through the final concert of their "farewell tour." December 17th, 1982 on pay per view. Being eleven years old @ the time of the concert, I was hooked by the first note. Since then, I've seen The Who an additional 7 times. For two & half years, I was corresponding with Pete Townshend via the postal service. We traded Birthday & Christmas cards in that time, I'll cherish those for the rest of my life. I have cds of all twelve studio albums, most of them are the deluxe version. I also have vinyl versions of "It's Hard", the original & fortieth anniversary deluxe. John Entwistle's "Too Late The Hero", Simon's "Sweet Sounds" LP & "Empty Glass" as well as "White City: A Novel" by Pete. I've also got vinyl copies of Roger's first album "Daltrey" & "Under A Raging Moon." The Who have been an amazing inspiration to my creative writing style, as well. Most of lyrics are written as rock operas, & as we all know. Pete not only started the concept, he perfected it. I've also found myself gravitating, towards band that write in that style as well. Long Live Rock, Long Live The Who. 🎤🎸🎺🥁

I got to see The Who mark 2.0 with Kenney. He is a good drummer, I don't mean to take anything away from him on that count, and he was a natural replacement for Keith because of their long-time friendship (that is, as long as they insisted on carrying on without Keith, which artistically was a bad move in my opinion), but it was still a disappointment - Kenney was no Keith. Sorry, Ken, but you know it at least as well as I do.

I was 10 years old and hearing the incredible music of the time on a transistor radio. 10 years later after we purchased a proper stereo, the status symbol of our peer group, Who's Next was one of our favorite albums. We played it over and over. I hope the neighbors enjoyed it. In later years, as I listen to tracks like Won't Get Fooled Again, I am left wondering how a generation that grew up listening to this incredible music didn't do better. Should the day ever come when we are fighting in the street with our children at our feet, each side is likely to claim Won't Get Fooled Again as their anthemn without ever fully appreciating the message.

I have a playlist of anti-establishment protest songs going back to the 1930s. It really does seem that the more things change, the more they stay the same. These songs reflect over 80 years of injustice. Everything from Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", and "We Shall Overcome", to the many protest songs of the 60s from artists like Bob Dylan and Sam Cooke, to the more recent "This is America" by Childish Gambino. Lyrics change to reflect current trends, but most are of the same theme, that "freedom" and the pursuit of happiness depend on one's wealth and concentration of melanin.

'Who's Next' is one of the greatest albums ever. 1971 was, I think, the best year in rock and roll history. Not necessarily what was in the singles charts, but, man, the albums from that year! My son (I'm 63; he's 22, and a big fan of album rock) thinks 1972 beats it, but this album, on its own, makes that a silly idea to me. Every note on this entire album is etched into me. We had the 8-track when I was a kid, and we pretty much wore it out on the stereo my brother and I had in our attic bedroom, and for which we made our own speakers because we couldn't find any that had big enough woofers for this and other albums we wanted to hear LOUD. At the time, I knew nothing about the music's background and development, though the massage was very clear, even though I was a pre-teen when I first heard it. Since then, I've learned quite a bit of the back story, but as always, you've given me way more to mull over. Now do Baba O'Reilly (unless you already have: I can't keep up!)

Songs like this are symbolic of the creativity and complexity that embodied music in the 70s and even early 80s. It seemed to have faded out especially in the 90s. He was on his cell phone and and I thought about asking for an autograph, but I didn't out of fear that he'd tell me to piss off. That song is my all time favorite and I learned to play it years ago. I still have that original 70s album, all scratched up now.

I didn't know any of this, I had all the who albums but never could get into them much, I still remember 'boris the spider' for some odd reason. But really fascinating stuff, how many musicians really get this muchinto the details anymore I wonder.

Pete Townshend is THE best rock lyricist in history, Daltrey is THE best front man/lead singer and THE WHO is THE best rock band of all time.....especially LIVE. And every member is at least one of the top 3 at their instrument in rock history.....period.

No argument here, but I'd stack up Ray Davies lyrically Catalogue to matching Pete's.

@@hotrox2112Only Kinks songs I recall are Your Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night and that insipid Lola nonsense. I saw then LIVE once in Detroit 1979 with Ian Hunter and don't recall their set at all so it must have been lame...

3rd stone from the sun back in the early 70's. my uncles used to play prog rock all the time at my grandparents. i remember hearing it and being blown away. i was 3/4 at the time. because of my uncles, i love prog rock as they played a lot of that back then.
