So... I received mine, my short review; Image quality 5/5 No complaints at all. Very accurate colors, no dead pixels, the sharpness was a bit too low out of the box for my taste, but nothing a quick increase in the menu couldn't fix. A little bit of backlight bleeding on the top, but not really intrusive in general. Really happy with this. Sound 2/5. Well... Way below average... Speakers crack regularly with music or movies or games, sound reproduction is not really accurate, it's sometimes even difficult to understand what someone is saying in a movie trailer and so on. I really want some separate speakers now, but, I will stick to using my headphones for now. Sound quality is great through the headphone port though. Maybe I should re-evaluate the speaker sound quality after the speakers break in, but, if they're crackling already, I doubt it will get any better. It's not faulty speakers by the way. Majority of things sound fine, as in, without cracks. When it does happen, it's extremely ugly. Build 3.5/5. The monitor itself feels well built. The curve is slight but very very nice. Glad I went with it instead of the flat version. Don't think I would've liked it as much if it was flat. The menu button feels flimsy and it's not really that accurate either. Sometimes it registers a different direction than I pressed. I really hope it doesn't give out on me. Thankfully it has software which allows you to control the monitor through windows itself. The stand has adjustable height and tilt, which is great. Bit it's not really that firm, meaning the monitor can 'jiggle' around if your desk itself is not stable. Overall; 4/5. It's a shame about the sound, but most people don't really rely on the sound of their monitors anyway, so I won't downgrade the point too much because of that. The build issues are there, but not deal breakers for most anyway.

just inform anyone thinking about getting this monitor, if you have a nvidia card, you will experience frame skipping if monitor is oc to 75hz. with freesync on or off. If you have an AMD card then it will work as intended, if you have nvidia you will only be able to play on 60hz, unless you like frame skipping

Excellent review sir. I was looking for a 34" gsync (or maybe freesync and change the card at the next amd revision), but frankly don't want to spend the money on a technology that isn't perfect yet. For a third of the cost this monitor will fill the gap for a couple of years. Whilst not a throwaway item I am not going to be as disappointed that it isn't perfect as if I spent 1k on some 34" that in 6 months is outdated or available for much less money. For me, 29" 1080 replaced if needed in a couple of years or so is far easier to live with than 34" 1440 that I'm stuck with for a decade because of what i spent...... This way I don't have to regret my hasty decision whilst I watch monitors improve, ultra-wide get no content and gsync/freesync fight it out and find I backed the wrong horse. Thanks again.
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+CarpeMea Yeah, I know what you mean. 2560x1080 is also significantly less easier to power than UW 1440p. You can power 1080p UW with anything (and including) the RX 480. And Vega will hit the market soon, so that's good as well.
@carlosnazario11708 жыл бұрын
that monitor looks amazing. I think you should try DOOM on that monitor and i think using all levels of OC would be welcome. As far as i know you are the only youtuber to have a RX 480OC that high and make content and i feel alot of people would love to see how it performes.

@carlosnazario11708 жыл бұрын
Not outside of bench marking no at least searching on youtube in the US region you are the only video in existence of a RX 480 operating and gaming at beyond 1370mhz which seems to be most ppls limit with OC. So yes i strongly encourage you to make more content! :D
@d33rgod588 жыл бұрын
I have Sapphire Nitro 480 4GB and currently I run it at 1400 MHz on 1110 mV. It also ran stable 1450 on maximum voltage (1175 mV) but was unstable at 1475 MHz. Could be that people try to up the clock but leave voltage on auto which assigns 1175 mV (WTF?), which ofc causes massive power drain and temperature which in turn can throttle the clock depending on how do you set maximum allowed temp and power.
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+d33rgod Excellent reply here. Good job on that OC. I really like the RX 480 at those clock speeds. It really makes the card perform just awesome.

very nice choice. i prefer monitors similar to this one that offer better color and contrast vs the more dull looking 144htz panels. i recently picked up a samsung 24" curved 1080p display that only runs 60htz but the color and deep blacks are worth it.
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+Tech_bloodbath Yeah, I think almost all 144hz monitors are TN, and that is the reason for duller colors. A monitor like this can be "overclocked" to something like 90Hz and this should be a good middle ground between the standard 60 and the fast 144Hz.

WoW is said to make good use of 21:9. League of Legends has ultrawide support, I guess it helps you spot ganks with wider vision, but perhaps you already know that. Rocket League should also be quite nice on the ultrawide and racing games is one of the best genres for 21:9. However I'd love to try out action games (like Doom, Metro, Wolfenstein, Battlefield) whenever I get my new monitor, that is...
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+George K. Hey man! From what I played so far I was severely impressed by a few games. First of all is Witcher 3 which is just jaw_dropping-ly beautiful in some areas on UW. Second is some sections in DOOM. Again, extremely pretty. BF1 also looks amazing in UW. Other games, not so much. I'd mention here Overwatch, Mafia 3, Crysis 3 etc. They look great, don't get me wrong, but lack that "holy sh!t" moment when you fire them up.
@George_K.8 жыл бұрын
MindBlank Tech Thank you for the reply! I watched your GTX 1060 and Ultrawide video, it's very informative - the testing methodology and style were great, but the gameplay wasn't stressing the system much. I like your editing and you have good ideas (that cheeky FREESYNC tear really got me) - it reminds me a little of HardwareCanucks from a couple of years ago. BtW maybe you should follow the r/ultrawidemasterrace Group/Curator on steam for more 21:9 game titles. I play games 90% of my PC time, so lately I'm very much into Civilization (turn based) and Stellaris which are from the (grand) strategy games genre and I was absolutely thorn for some time between 3440x1440 for real estate and 2560x1080p for better FPS in action games and much lower price (~270€). I've got 23" 1080p IPS, so I'm thinking since going to 21:9 impacts the PC experience so much, it shoudl be best to push it even further with 3440x1440 and make it that much more of an upgrade. However I'll swallow Acer XR341ck's extremely salty price (I can already hear my wallet weep like no Steam sale ever made it before), because I believe my R9 390 will manage the 2K UW with LFC and a couple of settings tweaks, so it just comes down to deciding when to purchase, because HDR is coming shortly to the market. I believe 2017 will be the year of HDR monitors and my ultrawide better provide all features available for the next few years, especially when dropping over 800€. What's your take on the ultrawide segment of the IT market as of now?

Great review, subbed! However, you should have added some frame rates for the most popular games (doom, BF1, overwatch, etc) running on your RX480 and how they perform with Freesync. I think that is the most important info for gamers interested to buy this monitor ;)
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+tsampaola Hey there! That video will come soon. Already have this up for the GTX 1060, but plan to have a more indepth one with the RX 480 as well. Stay tuned! :)

Thanx for the reply buddy, much appreciated. This is a freesync UW monitor not just a UW monitor. People with a tighter budget are looking to pair it with a RX480 to take advantage of FS and enjoy UW gaming. IMO, focus should be on how well that pairing works (with fps results) and what experience it offers to those looking to go down that road. Your videos are very comprehensive but you should consider catering to that market, as AMD has gained a considerable market share in the midrange gfx card category with the RX480 release. Just a thought ;) Also, don't forget that a lot of people are on the prowl these days looking to upgrade their system to play all the major titles coming out now (BF1 would be on the top of my list). So don't delay that review!!! :)

How is the bleed and ips glow on your sample of the 29uc88?, ive had a few UW myself and all of them with the exception of LGs 29um57 was dreadful (including but not limited to the Dell u3415w). I am hoping the curved models have less of an issue with glow as it is the worst part about IPS/PLS
@ThePhilosophersYawn8 жыл бұрын
I received this monitor yesterday. I 'll make a separate comment in this video for others to read but I 'll adress your question here. I was very worried about ips glow as I watch a lot of horror and sci-fi films on my pc (and also play horror games). I also use dark themes/skins on my system (windows, firefox, chrome) as well as for sites (google, youtube etc) so ips glow would be very annoying. The monitor has almost zero backlight bleed but it does suffer from ips glow as (unfortunately) expected with ips. Though I found its not so annoying as I feared. Depending on light conditions you can play around with settings (brightness, black level, black stabilizer and maybe gamma) and achieve very deep blacks with barely noticable glow. I watched the film "pandorum" (in ultrawide) which is a very dark film as a test and was surprised by the black levels and minimum glow this panel can achieve. Worst case is of course in a completely dark room watching a very dark film... yet even in this setting the panel can provide a very good overall experience, not ideal but better than most ips panels, especially better than both my TVs. The best case is in a softly lit room (in my case a 7w lamp in a corner of the room), you can get amazing black levels with almost non-existent glow (for films). Of course if you just open a plain black image fullscreen you will still see ips glow no matter what you do... the glow will always be there but in most uses you wont notice it. For desktop use (and probably games, havent tested yet) you will need to set higher brightness to fully enjoy the AMAZING colours of this monitor so in dark backgrounds you will notice some glow. Yet it still isnt so bad to be dissapointing. Overall the panel is thankfully much better than I was expecting.

+Peter Thomsen Well, depends on one's definition of dreadful. Mine has light bleed for sure. It doesn't bother me. Haven't encountered a situation where it was bothersome. *However*, I don't watch movies on it. Probably would be very noticeable in such a case. I think that it is on par with general IPS bleed. Not more, not less. I've seen less on much more expensive monitors, but I've seen worse on others...

Great video! I'm in the market for a new monitor and was hoping to pair it with an RX 480; how does this model compare to LG 29UM69G-B?
@marcuslee16848 жыл бұрын
Been tossing up between saving money and getting this, the LG 29UC88 or go all out on the 34 inch variant. Possible for a side by side comparison in terms to scale as an idea for a future video? :D I don't see many reviewers doing that.
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
Hey! I don't have access to the 32 inch, sadly. There is a difference in size, but it is not huge. 34 inch is nicer, obviously, but requires more space and more money... Also 2560x1080 on a 34 inch will look horrible, so they must be 3440x1440 = that means extra money and a capable GPU.

Great review. Great because it tells it how it is - even if it tells me things I don't want to hear about the product. Do you reckon a GTX590 will run it? My 590 runs 2x 22" monitors and works fine but one monitor just died so I'm thinking of an upgrade to this.

@d33rgod588 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the review. I've been eyeing this monitor for a while but reviews are scarce. What can you say about input lag though? I don't really play competitively fast-paced games but one guy on amazon in his review said it's not top notch in very twitchy games. But I guess it wouldn't matter to me. And one more thing? Is the curve worth paying extra? I do have some spare cash and would really prefer curved version. You buy monitor for a few years after all (at least my old one has 6 years atm).
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
Hey! Glad that I helped you out! I can't see any difference with input times between this and my old 23" 1080p IPS LG. I *can* see a difference from the 75Hz as opposed to 60Hz. Regarding the curve, it's a matter of preference. Like said in the video it is subtle. I really wanted a curved monitor. I like the concept of curved ultrawides, but it isn't really groundbreaking to be honest... If we're talking 34" curved it is more noteworthy, but on this monitor it's just aesthetics and actually just . little immersion factor out of it. Still awesome though. You get used to it really quickly, that's the bummer...
@d33rgod588 жыл бұрын
I ordered it today after much thinking. I can always return it if I don't like it but honestly the only thing that'd would make me do it is probably some massive backlight bleed. If it's okay in that department I will keep it I think. Regarding getting used to the curve I think it speaks well for it. I mean if you don't notice it and image is good on those sides that means the curve does its job, no? As in there's no distortion.

Good video, but just to put it out there, 40 - 75Hz is kinda the low range for Freesync. There are a lot of Freesync monitors with ranges of like ~40 - 144Hz. I don't know if there are many ultrawides with ranges that good, though. Just wanted to mention that
@rdeleonp8 жыл бұрын
It's not 144Hz, but it's IPS, Ultrawide, got a DP port and 30-90 Khz H-SYNC range. Just set it to 32-80 Hz FreeSync range for some LFC goodness and you're set ( use CRU: goo.gl/LyrY5k ).

@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+Matt Well, no, because this has a FS range between 40-75Hz and a lower res than the 34 incher. So it is easier to push higher frames AND it also has a more permissive range, starting from 40, not 50.

+Pasha Roytman Hey dude! The 29EA has no Freesync and 60Hz refresh rate. It is probably cheaper though. I wholeheartedly recommend Freesync, so if you have and AMD card to make use of it, I'd get a model with FS. Also, 75Hz might not sound like much an improvement over 60Hz, but when you compare them after seeing 75Hz, you will feel a definite difference in favor of the higher refresh rate one. Depends in you budget... Also, I think that 29EA is not curved, so if that's a worthwhile thing for you, then that's another thing not going in its favor.

Great video. I own an rx 480 and was thinking of going for the 29UM68-P which is similar in specs (2560x1080 75hz freesync ips) but 100 $ cheaper. I wonder in what aspect its worse than this one. I would also be very interested on some rx 480 benchmarks on this resolution :)
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
Hey dude! Glad you liked it. I'll consider testing the RX480 at this res. Had it in my plan anyway ;). Also, I think that for $100 less you should maybe go for the non-curved option as if curved is not that appealing to you. The big immersion factor here is from the aspect ratio itself - first place. Then from the curved bit which is not that prominent anyway. Still love the curve on it though. :)

what is the refresh rate using a a nvidia 960 with a hdmi and what would be the refresh rate with a dp. i know that some freesnyc monitor will only run at 60 hz on nvidia hardware due to freesync and the lg page does explain anything really
@MindBlank867 жыл бұрын
+ferdaus bhuiyan Hmmm, if I remember correctly, I was limited to 60Hz through HDMI...
@DarthQueefious7 жыл бұрын
Seen people enable LFC for this by increasing the Freesync range down into the 30's using Custom Resolution Utility (without introducing frameskipping) LFC enables automatically so long as the highest Freesync range is x2 of the lowest. AMD says x2.5 but x2 is the threshold

Have you tried to overclock this monitor (with CRU for example)? I mean, can it run on more than 75Hz?
@MindBlank867 жыл бұрын
+Rostislav Hašek I did, but not with CRU. I used the built in custom res in the drivers. I set 80Hz and didn't even need to test further as it was visibly choppy and skipping refresh windows. Either my way s not the correct way of trying an 'OC' on a monitor, or 75Hz is the limit for my particular panel and electronics.

So does the freesync only work with display port? What if I want to use an external 24 inch monitor, will using hdmi on the 24 inch affect the display port?
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+ug0ts3rvd Yeah, FS is only through DisplayPort on this one. As for the second question, I don't get ehat you are trying to do... Connect another 24" through HDMI and keep this monitor on DisplayPort? Yeah, that'll work just fine.
@LOCNL0ADED8 жыл бұрын
No freesync through HDMI, does this mean you can only use freesync through DVI?
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+LOCNL0ADED No, FS only works through DisplayPort.
@LOCNL0ADED8 жыл бұрын
MindBlank Tech thanks for the reply! I read LG started making their monitors FS HDMI compatible late last year. Are your sources recent?
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+LOCNL0ADED Yeah, dude. For certain this monitor doesn't support FS through HDMI. Other models do, of course, but not this one.
@LOCNL0ADED8 жыл бұрын
MindBlank Tech here's the article: www.144hzmonitors.com/other/upcoming-amd-freesync-monitors-in-2016/ I by no means want to sound picky or stubborn bro. I really respect you and at the end of the day, YOU'RE the expert here and I'll value YOUR say. it's just really important to me because this is what will determine if I buy this monitor or not! Please understand. Love and respect man. Really appreciate your replies. Subbed.
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+LOCNL0ADED Don't worry dude, I don't take it the wrong way. I think the site is misinformed. When I plugged in my HDMI on the monitor it said that FS was not supported. I know that FS through HDMI as well as Framerate Compensation are only available on the latest monitors being released. Anyway, that site also says that it is a 3440x1440 monitor when it clearly isn't.

is it good for competitive games as well?
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
Hey! This is 75Hz max refresh rate. It is definitely visible compared to 60Hz. I play Overwatch and things are better than my 60Hz that I had before. For competitive however, I'd look at 90-120-144MHz though. 75Hz is more like bonus for this monitor, although already enjoying it in Overwatch, like I said.

Will I have 75hz with radeon r9 390?

Would an nvdia 1070 work with the freesync on this monitor?
@MindBlank868 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Wang Hey! No, Freesync is AMD only at this moment. Not that it is a closed system, but there isn't anyone adopting it right now. Intel will be soon. GSync for any NV card if you want to have this technology. But that means less money in your pocket, as GSync monitors are more expensive.

@MindBlank867 жыл бұрын
I think it has a sharpness option. I'll check! The 29UC88-B has a sharpness option. What do you use it for and why is it a deal breaker? I never use it...
@R-R077 жыл бұрын
thanks for the replay . and about the sharpness . idk man . ever since I bought the Korean 1440p i start to notice the blur very badly with monitors without sharpness option. to me sometimes in games i like to hit it up to 60-75% sharpness to make it looks pleasing to me . since i hate Bluring ( i even turn it off in games graphic settings)
@kledder3187 жыл бұрын
05:50 Come on man. The colours definitely suck and are not realistic at all, like most other LG displays. They are waaaaay overblown and there is no way to correct this. I spent quite a bit of time trying so that's when I decided to sent this model back.
@MindBlank867 жыл бұрын
+kledder Well, I actually found colors dull, lifeless, not overblown. After tinkering for days it seems that setting the refresh to 100Hz helps the colors somewhat. 144Hz sadly has all sorts of adverse effects on the image quality - i.e. darkening, duller colors, reduced brightness etc.

Thanks man! What model do you have? Not all 29 inch UW LG monitors have FreeSync.
@JoshTechgamer7 жыл бұрын
ok I have the 29um68
@MindBlank867 жыл бұрын
The 29UM68 is FreeSync enabled. Are you running it through a DisplayPort cable? FreeSync on this monitor only works through DP, not HDMI. Also, pretty obvious here, but you need to be running an AMD card that supports FreeSync. That is any card that is GCN 1.1 or above. So for the 2xx series, that's only 260, 285 and 290 cards, for 3xx series it's 360, 380 and 390. All Fury and Polaris based cards support it as well.
