Nice video, I'm a resident of Limburg. My grand uncle who was in the resistance, joined the Americans, and got killed in Duisburg (DE). Thanks for making this video, and pronouncing Limburg correctly.

From what I read there was starvation in the North of Holland? I think you did a video on that subject?
Another great video Stefan! But why did they wait until March 1945 to liberate more parts of the Netherlands to the north?
@HistoryHustle Жыл бұрын
Basically it came down to giving Germany priority.
@staaaaalbeton Жыл бұрын
@@HistoryHustle Partly. The then still unliberated part of Netherlands had a though frontline which fell almost the same as the former Festung Holland. Liberating this would cost 10's of thousands in military and civilian lives. It wasn't worth it. Also it kept the German 25th Army occupied and thus not deployable beyond the Rhine and would help in the push to Berlin.

Weer een interessante docu, Stefan. Geen 'grote, bekende' veldslagen, maar leuk dat je een onderbelicht stukje vaderlandse historie er uit licht.

Once again, I thank you for excellent work Stef.Two excellent war movies which I greatly enjoyed watching were set in the Netherlands, The Black Book and Riphagen. Both movies deal with resistance and collaboration

As a Dutchman living in Canada this video means a lot as Canada played a large role in Liberation of The Netherlands. Great video! My Oma wrote a poem about Canadian liberators.
@HistoryHustle Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply. Often the US gets the credits for the liberation of NL, but they focussed on the south and then moved into Germany. The Canadians had to bear the brunt of the fighting, especially at the Schelde. There is a good movie about this.

@@HistoryHustle Yes, not to take anything away from the Americans...and I know my Dutch family and many others remember the Canadians :)

All respect to the American boys who crossed the Atlantic Ocean and put their own lives on the line, to rescue the people of a foreign country. Alongside other allies, the whole of continental Europe owes them an incalculable debt. Hopefully, some of them will watch this video and take time to pay their respects to the fallen. From personal knowledge, I know that the Netherlands still has enormous gratitude. That makes them deserving of the ultimate sacrifice that many of their liberators paid.

That was interesting. I guess there were plenty of fries and mayonnaise flowing that day. What I am really curious about is the beer industry in Netherlands and Belgium during WWII. I can't seem to find information on this topic. By the way, what are your favorite beers? Take it easy.

Leonard is pronounced Len'-urd, not Lee'-o-nard. :) Names are hard, but considering he died liberating a Dutch town he deserves to have it said correctly. :)

What Holland went through. I do wonder why the Dutch tolerate the Germans, even now...!.I lived through does awful times in England, and that was bad enough ...
@HistoryHustle Жыл бұрын
I can imagine it must have made a huge impact on you. Guess you were very young at that age. The Dutch basically moved on and we are now good with the Germans. The new generation cannot help what Hitler did.
@browngreen933 Жыл бұрын
Don't forget, it was Britain who declared war on Germany and Hitler made several subsequent peace offers and Hess even flew there to work things out. Just saying...
