*EDIT JULY 2024: I am very aware a lot of you aren't fans of how I speak in this video. I'm pretty sure the most popular comment is someone recommending that you speed it up when you watch it lol. This was made very early into the channel's life when I wasn't really comfortable on a mic yet and it shows. My narration on our newer videos is a lot better in my humble opinion, so if you thought to yourself "good video but hate the narrator" try giving one of our newer videos a shot and see what you think! Maybe you'll still hate how I sound but you'll at least hear me sound alive haha. Our newer work in general is just higher quality, but unfortunately KZbin doesn't seem to push it quite as hard as our older stuff. Either way thanks for all the feedback over the years, it has made me better as KZbinr and I appreciate all of you immensely for that!* *Corrections:* 1. 10:17- An important thing to note here is this is Mr. Reubens recollection of what happened, Phil never elaborated on it beyond "we had a falling out and haven't spoken since". While I don't think Pee -wee would lie to us it's always important to recognize how perspective colors our view of events, and since Phil died before he could really tell his side of the story publicly all we have to go off of is what Paul is saying happened. 2. 18:02- I want to apologize to my fellow Simpsons fans for neglecting to mention Troy's attraction to fish, I know I let all of you down here and I'm truly sorry 😔 3. 19:29- In retrospect saying he was offered "the lead role" isn't really accurate, he was definitely one of the main characters, but it was more of an ensemble show ala It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or something like that. It was also pointed out to me that Joe Rogan wasn't actually brought onto the show until after the pilot had been shot, my mistake. 4. 25:58- The lawsuit was not dismissed, her brother settled out of court for $100,000. My mistake on that. 5. I pronounced Stephen Root's name wrong. It's stee-vuhn not steh-fuhn. *Additional Information:* Originally, I expanded more on Phil's post-SNL career before going into the murder, but I decided to cut some of that out for time so I will list the info here for anyone who is interested: -NewsRadio ran for 5 seasons total (with Phil starring in all but the final season), it was very well received critically but struggled with audiences and never really had great ratings. It's a very funny show IMO and definitely worth checking out if you're ever looking for something to watch. *EDIT: So in a prior version of this comment I incorrectly speculated that a reason the show struggled in ratings was it had to compete with some of the more popular shows of the 90s such as Seinfeld, Friends, etc. But a commenter kindly pointed out that it was actually on the same network as those shows and the reasons for it struggling were mostly internal conflicts with executives.* I think if it had the benefit of being around in today's world where streaming views are more important than TV ratings it would've become more well known. -Phil returned twice to SNL as a host in 1996. -Some noteworthy films he starred in around this time included the Arnold Schwarzenegger led comedy Jingle All the Way, Sgt Bilko(which was a critical and commercial failure), and the Sinbad comedy Houseguest. His final on-screen role was in the 1998 Science Fiction film Small Soldiers which was dedicated to him.
@BigGiantMonster3 жыл бұрын
When Phil joined the cast of Newsradio it did not include a young Joe Rogan. Rogan was cast after the pilot was filmed. Also Newsradio was never "up against" Seinfeld, Frasier or Friends, as all of those shows were on NBC. The creators of Newsradio were always clashing with the network execs and the network is the one that basically f**ked the show.

None of us were there in their home to even know what REALLY happened. Mental illness is not a reason to hate someone. And, this video even alludes to Phil's infidelity in previous marriage. If that was part of his last marriage, jealousy isn't the problem. Trauma, extreme betrayal, extreme violation, etc. is the problem. And cons ou dering her behavior after their first child, she could have had post partum issues that were never addressed. I don't want to disparage him, but I have been in a marriage where I received a gift for our baby from a woman my ex had nude photos of, that I discovered the pics on. So imagine the slap in the face recieving a gift for a tiny human being created by you and the father, when his former (or maybe sneakily current) lover are still communicating. My ex was also very apathetic and would easily go to bed and sleep like a baby uninterested and apathetic to my feeling and careless at what he was doing to me. On the outside, we looked like a cute couple with a beautiful baby. But nobody knew the extreme mental abuse and eventually physical abuse I went through until I started to confide in te trusted friends. I would just like to add that I was not a drug or alcohol user during this period in my life. Yeah I smoked pot as a teen a few times and drank socially in my 20s but this all occurred in my 30s. My ex seemed very normal to most people and would play the victim to his family. It was actually his own friends that saw through him because they could see the lies he had told about me to be diametrically opposed to who I was and am. Dealing with someone like him, can send someone over the line of sanity. And it is a shame. I really enjoyed Phil's work but philandering is a form of intimate partner abuse. So is the apathy about the misdeeds. It is crazy making otherwise known as gaslighting.

The dynamic of this relationship is so similar to me & my ex it's terrifying. His wandering eye & tendency to go to sleep or shut her out during arguments; her drug use, jealousy & feelings of inadequacy in her career. The difference was the presence of a gun in the home & the fact we broke up (they didn't). Don't ever "try to make things work" with someone--especially if you have kids--when things are this bad. I feel so bad for the kids they left behind.

As someone who was unfamiliar with Phil Hartman, his contributions to the comedy world, and his career, thank you for this video. I think you did a stellar job detailing, not just the tragedy of his life, but also highlighting his contributions to the world. This is something too many people look over when it comes to the whole "true crime" category. I believe that the reporting was fair to all parties, and did not paint anyone in a negative light who was too undeserving of their description. Thank you again, very good video.

Very well done. I never looked into Phil’s death before. For a murder it always seemed strange to me how quiet everyone was about it. This video lays out an unbiased report of events & testimony, which reveals a tragic situation that probably happens to a lot of people to varying degrees. In this case the worst happened. Maybe the reason it was never controversial or a big headline story is because it’s more of a cautionary tale, and that Phil’s wife, by confessing and then promptly ending her life next to Phil, had brought herself to justice in a way that answers all questions and brings closure. I hope their children have been surviving the trauma and I pray they’ve overcome it in some ways.

Joe Rogan and Phil were close friends. Phil told Joe one reason he was slow to divorce Brynn was that it would cost him a fortune in legal fees. Jealousy doesn't even make sense, and too many women don't comprehend that. You can't force someone to love you, be faithful or not leave.
