To be fair no one understood what a digital footprint *actually* was until a few years ago 😭 Jeffree Star still somehow managed to be signed to Akon (a black man) when he did music, even after all the stuff he’s been recorded saying within around the same time 🤣

@Henny.777 honestly I was constantly reminded of digital footprint when I was growing up, I guess the idea is more widespread now, but the concept has been around since at least the early 2000s

@@xXnymphXx Yeah but it wasn’t as prominent back then, I was obviously taught to be careful what you post online etc etc, but only in recent years have people ACTUALLY started digging into people’s old social media accounts and posts. I never said it *wasn’t* a thing, I’m simply saying it was a lot less big of a deal back then, and that can actually clearly be proven by the way celebrities used to post on their social platforms back in the day. Bella Hadid had an eating disorder themed tumblr for gods sake.

I'm only 40 minutes into the video but I just wanna add that Halsey has recently been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjögren's syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome, and POTS on top of already dealing with endometriosis. I'm 20 y/o and I have all of those things too and they have RUINED my life. The hallmark of EDS is unexplained, widespread agony every single second of every day for years until someone FINALLY believes you and runs tests and puts all the pieces together. I can't even describe what living with this shit is like. She must be so fucking strong to even be able to walk and move at all. It's really hard for us EDSers or "zebras" to cope with knowing there is no cure and we are always told by doctors that will will never be without pain every day and hopefully it can be turned down from a 9 or 10/10 to maaaaaybe a 5, whereas a normal person with normal cells is at a 3 or so on a bad day. The pain is unexplained and constant and we also get injured and fall and break bones and bleed and bruise really easily and it often never heals bc of our cellular makeup. So, I have some serious respect for Halsey and I hope I can be as strong as them someday soon.

about the japanese album release: it's by no means a halsey-specific thing, actually something that a lot (if not most or all?) western bands and artists signed to major labels do. to paraphrase the "japanese edition" wikipedia article: because it costs more to manufacture albums in japan, labels make these "special" albums with extra bonus tracks that aren't available in the standard edition releases to incentivise japanese people to buy albums that are made in-land instead of importing from elsewhere.

I feel like Halsey is the ultimate result of tumblr culture and we don't have anyone quite like her. She fully embraced the tumblr aesthetic and made it into a career. I fell in love with her very early on as an artist because I loved tumblr and I wanted to be one of those girls so bad, and she is one of the few alt girls that made it into the mainstream media (the only one back then probably). I kinda forgot about her for some years but then rediscovered my love for her when I listened to Manic for the first time, I just felt so connected to her, I felt like she understood me completely. Since then I developed a real respect for her as a person, as an artist, and as a professional.

She only talked about it once she had her baby about a year later, so if I had to guess, that’s why the story didn’t get much traction. She was more just revealing it in the wake of the news of her having a baby so it was kind of presented as side news. Talking about miscarriage is hard and I was so grateful that she talked about her experience at all, it really helped me a lot, since no one in my life had either had a miscarriage or the few that had didn’t register it as a trauma which made me feel weak and like I was handling it wrong

I hope you see this comment - the reason that _Badlands_ (like a lot of other big-label album releases) got a “Japanese” edition is not bc of Halsey potentially fetishizing Japanese culture, but because of Japanese CD prices. Due to regulations that I don’t know the specifics of, it’s a lot cheaper for record stores in Japan to import US or EU versions of CDs than to sell Japanese versions. If they’re imported, they’re taxed differently, so a lot of record labels release Japanese editions with Japanese translations of liner notes and song titles and usually a few exclusive bonus tracks as an incentive to buy the actual Japanese version over the import.

Thank you so much of this. I’ve been a fan of hers for years and years and the way people are so used to clowning her without even knowing what for is just a lot of misogyny imo. That 34:55 remark of "lashing out" rubbed me the wrong way. I understand what you're referring to but there's so many issues with fans way overstepping their boundaries with celebrities and acting like they are owed affection from their idols. Halsey has been open about their struggles with bipolar disorder and we're just glossing over the fact that bipolar comes with a lot of emotional intensity and it's really difficult to keep in perspective how you come off, even though you can improve with medication? That doesn't negate how intense and painful interactions of rejection can feel and as someone who is neurodivergent themselves, I can tell you that they did the only thing we, neurodivergents, can do when we're about to express our symptoms - communicate. To have it described as lashing out feels a bit ableist because all they tried to do is explain their circumstances and be excused for the situation that is outside their control.
@zombieedrea

YES!!!! Thank you!!! It pissed me off so bad when people did nothing but ridicule her for it, and then these same people turn around on their social media pages acting like they're advocates for mental health. I also have bipolar disorder and my very first thought was "she might be manic or anxious due to stress." I have "lashed out" like that so many times, and seeing the reaction to her just only proved to me that so many people are not walking the walk when they say they are a mental health advocate. It just showed me that if I ever happen to have a vulnerable moment like that in public, I'd be ridiculed. It felt hella ableist to me then and it still very much does now. I would love to see all the people laughing to spend five minutes in Halsey's shoes with their own mental health struggles deal with being shat on constantly while in the public eye. I really wish people would practice what they preach when they say they have empathy.

From one Ashley to another, only you could present this much-needed Halsey timeline to the masses! I used to work for a music tech startup that became a lyric publishing website (basically Genius) from 2011-2016, can confirm I saw her rise organically despite seeming like an industry plant! What this summary of her career reminded me was her & Taylor are so much alike despite being 5 yrs apart - the timing is so funny with Halsey hating on Harry and Taylor via her 1D blog (which I agree with ONLY for the sus age difference), then ultimately bagging Matty Healy despite it being v problematic agewise, and now look at Tay and Matty??? I would LOVE to learn that Harry and Halsey have hooked up for this particular reason, closing the gap 😂 I will always have a soft spot for Halsey for many of the reasons commented, one of our original cringe figureheads a la Debbie Ryan but I love them for it!!!! And of course Halsey bringing back cowboy realness for the masses, “You Should Be Sad” is one of my favorite pop bops of all time and that is no lie. p.s. I loved the bit about being a 1D fan and how they offer universal housing because you’re officially adopted 🤣

Love your deep dives so much and the new camera looks great! I thought the mention of the Japanese CD was interesting. I've looked into this before since so many albums have Japan only bonus tracks and it's because it's cheaper for people to import CD's from other countries so to get them to buy the Japanese version, labels and artists put extra bonus songs as an incentive. Not entirely dismissing the claims of fetishization, just giving some context!

Japan is the world's second biggest music market, and it has been for quite a long time. Japanese only albums with bonus tracks were really common when CDS were the most popular format. Also a lot of acts and artists end up with big fan bases in Japan, to the point that "big in Japan" is a phrase that's been in use for a long time. Edit - this includes acts who end up being more successful in Japan than in their own countries.

Not to defend Maggie Stiefvater 'cause the messiness of that woman is immense, but 'the other' wasn't a problematic thing. It's a literary studies term to describe anyone/anything that exists outside the boundaries of a specific community and/or concept, usually community as it's usually used to refer to people, and faces ostracization as a result of this. So technically speaking, a person of colour can be 'the other', just like a woman can be 'the other' to a community full of men, even a random person with no discernible qualities can be one if there's want for it and enough ostracization for whatever reason. A bit iffy, but not her saying anything inherently bad.

thank you soo much for this! its so easy to hate on people/judge them when they feel out of reach and its really important to humanize the celebrities behind the screens. so sad how everyone treated her during those times, its like the concept of misogyny just went out the window and it was simply labelled lighthearted humorous hate.....i mean come on lets b real

There actually is a reason why Halsey released a Japanese version! Domestically sold albums are much more expensive in Japan. To deter consumers from simply importing an album, special versions were created with bonus tracks to encourage people to buy the album stocked in Japan. The extras in the special "Japan version" may be worth the extra price compared to importing a cheaper copy from the US or elsewhere. This is not unique to Halsey either. Most labels will do this for Japan.

34:52 Ok I don’t even necessarily like Halsey but saying her respectfully addressing fans about them harassing her is “lashing out” or “yelling” is INSANE and completely tone deaf. This part of the video is very icky, Ashley. Celebs have every right to tell fans to chill the fuck out & stop being entitled. She wasn’t rude or even nasty about it although she could’ve been. More celebs should call out their fans entitlement tbfh cuz I’m tired of seeing it too, I can’t imagine being on the receiving end.

Honestly the way I explained the situation was garbage. I think it was just a high stress moment and I can't stress enough that I would not be able to handle the bs celebrities put up with anything near as gracefully. I changed the timestamp title and I agree that fans need to be more aware that celebs, like Halsey, are people as well.

Yeah Halsey was actually so respectful? and they had every right to call the people out for harassing her. did not understand how that was "lashing out" at all.

tw for abuse // g-e*sy was physically abusive towards h during their relationship. a lot of their songs on manic are about her surviving that relationship and looking at it now from the other side. just wanted to note that because they have a lot of exes and drama surrounding their love life (especially that particular relationship) but he is an actual scumbag!
