It is very clearly a satirical homage to Cousteau. For example Zissous ship is the Belafonte. Singer Harry Belafonte ang Calypso style music and his thirst album was called Calypso. Cousteaus ship was the Calypso. Belafonte -> Calypso -> Cousteau. The movie is full of stuff like this.

Those animatronic Dolphins looked almost like the real Dolphins AKA like the real deal organic living things. 10:48 & 11:08 Hey, that’s the Lizard looking creature that was seen swimming in the Trailer & in the movie.

Henry Selick worked on this movie even he’s not the director because after MonkeyBone was a flop which causes him to stop directing he did a minor part of being a stop motion animator for the film

The black singer in the movie did covers of this and other songs in Portugese (?). That was a David Bowie song, Major Tom. I'm not sure if the singer (who is apparently well known) released an album of his songs in this movie.
