Episode 7 Notes: Can the Dead Hear? There are three main opinions on this topic: View 1: The Dead cannot hear the living This view was held by Aisha RA and other prominent scholars such as Al Bayhaqi, Ibn Al Jawzi and Ibn Abidin. Those of this view use the Qur’an itself to support their point. They use the following 3 Ayah especially: Surah An Naml Ayah 80 Surah Ar Rum Ayah 52 Surah Fatir Ayah 22 Based on these Ayah they state, its clear the dead cannot hear the living. View 2: The Dead can hear the living Umar ibn Khattab RA, Anas Ibn Malik RA and Ibn Umar RA held this view. This shows even the Sahabah RA were divided on this issue. Those who hold this view use the Hadiths to back their claims. They have no Qur’anic Ayahs to back their claims. A large majority of scholars held this position too such as; Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Qayyim, Ibn Kathir and Imam An Nawawi. The Hadiths this group uses is those such as, when the Prophet SAW stated the dead after the Battle of Badr can hear him, when he speaks to them. Another is when the Prophet SAW mentioned how, “the dead can hear their family/friends footsteps as they leave graveyard”. Another Hadith they use is when the Prophet SAW went to Jannat Al Baqi, just prior to his demise and spoke to the dead there, after giving them Salaam. Those of this view point, interpret the Quranic references of the first view to mean that, the dead cannot hear the call to Islam, rather than the call of the living. Mean whilst those scholars from view 1, respond to the Hadith evidences of view 2, by specifying those occasions were just exceptions to the general rule. View 3: We will never know There is a third view held by Ibn Abd Al Barr RH, who states it’s pointless talking about it, as we will never know until we die. Fun Trivia fact: Hanafi Fiqh is consists of various strands. Three of the biggest ones being the Iraqi, Sham’i and Indian strands. Fun Trivia fact: Ibn Taymiyyah RH believed, the dead can speak to one another with the permission of Allah SWT. Fun Trivia fact: Musa AS and Adam AS had a debate in the Barzakh. See Sahih Al Bukhari Book 82, Hadith 20. ======================================================================== Disclaimer for my Notes of Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Life in the Barzakh Series Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, these are my notes on Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Life in the Barzakh series. Please note: I HIGHLY recommend that you all watch YQ’s Barzakh series, as I DON’T cover every single detail the Sheikh mentions. I made these notes primarily for myself but, decided my fellow brothers and sisters may benefit from them too. I no doubt will have made mistakes in my notes. All the good in these notes is from Allah SWT and all the mistakes are from myself. But, I was very meticulous and tried my best to make sure everything is accurate as the Sheikh mentions it. You also will see I have added “Fun Trivia facts” under each of my notes. These FTFs are information YQ said that was off topic or not necessary to include in my notes for the episode. But, they were still worth mentioning hence the inclusion as FTFs. FTFs aren’t always HAPPY pieces of information. Sometimes they are very sad trivia. I just want to say that FTF is the phrase I used for them all collectively when making the notes. One thing I wanted to do but am too lazy to do is, maybe someone could take the FTFs from under each “Episode” and make an Islamic reminder/information IG/TikTok account and post them daily or something. It Could be a great form of Sadaqah Jaariyah. Lastly, I have uploaded the notes to Dropbox, if anyone wants them in one document then comment below. I also have done notes on Sheikh YQs Seerah series and Mothers of the Believers series. You can find them below the episodes on his channel in comments. I believe the dead cannot hear by default except for what Allah allows them to hear. The evidence in the Qur’an is clear that dead cannot hear. When the dead hear in the Hadiths, they are hearing during specific occasions. It would be cool if it really was the case that they could interact. A grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle and cousin of mine passed away in the span of two years and all four were buried right next to each other.

When our Prophet PBUH was buried in the same room where Hazrat Ayesha used live, she continued living there. Later when Hazrat Abu Bakkar was also buried there, she continued living there without any change to the configuration of her room. But yet later when Hazrat Omar was buried there, she installed a parda (a sheet of cloth) between her sleeping area and the graves, because Hazrat Omar was a Na Mehram. What was the reason for that when, according to her, the dead cannot hear. Here was a matter of seeing as well.

Great lecture. Many modern day medical incidents have reported of clinically 'dead' people witnessing everything around them, hearing everything in clarity from above (where the soul is levitating above the medical bed) after their death to report in clear detail after coming back to life. However, they are unable to do anything but only hear and see.
@ameenaaneesh68625 жыл бұрын
@@rechargbattery Maybe, maybe not. I believe Sheikh Yasir Qadi is explaining from a fiqh point of view. However, there are plenty of experiences recorded of people, who felt a complete sense of peace, once the soul was out of the body, met deceased people who told them it was not their time yet, then were put back onto the body and it was painful than ever. Although, the monitors showed flat line, the 'dead' person clearly mentioned the conversations between staff to the doctor, leaving them stunned. Such people underwent a great transformation after that event. Allah knows best. Like Sheikh Yasir said, we can never know anything, until we are dead, or experience something similar. Ameena Aneesh Salam ‘Alaikum, dear sister. Consider these verses from the Noble Quran: *“The living and the dead are not the same! Truly, God causes whomever He wants to be hearing, while you cannot cause those who are in the graves to hear.”* (Quran 35:22) *“You cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call if they turn their backs and flee.”* (Quran 27:80) *“Only those who can hear will respond. **_But as for the dead,_** God will resurrect them; then to Him they will be returned!”* (Quran 6:36) I hope you can ponder & reflect deeply upon these undeniably clear & general statements from God Almighty Himself, which crystal clearly proclaim the reality that the dead cannot hear. As far as God’s word in the Quran is concerned, this issue is a closed case; and God’s word certainly trumps all. However, to respond to your medical point, let me provide you with 3 reasons why your mentioning of such clinical incidents is not good evidence: 1) No one can come back to life within this world. God Almighty throughout the Quran mentions clearly-and numerous times-that death in this worldly life is only once, after which we are raised back up on the Day of Resurrection to be judged. Upon death in this world, God says that no one can return. The Quranic evidence for this is in numerous. For example, God Almighty says, *”Until, when death comes to any one of them, they will say, “My Lord, send me back!”* *”That I may do right in what I have neglected!” By no means! It is merely a statement that they utter. And behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.”* (Quran 23:99-100) Moreover, God Almighty even quantifies the state of death, when He says, *”How can you show ingratitude & disregard towards God, when you were all dead, upon which He gave you life? Then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you all back to life, then to Him you will all be returned.”* (Quran 2:28) So according to this beautiful verse, God teaches us that death is twice, and life is twice (which is interesting when you consider God’s frequent statement that everything has been created in twos/pairs). So overall, these are the 4 stages of existence. We were first lifeless (‘dead’) before birth (1), and then God brought us to life in this world through birth by our parents (2), after which we will all ultimately die (3), and then be brought back into life again on the Day of Resurrection (4). This concept of the duality of life & death is also confirmed in another following noble verse, placed in the context of Judgement Day: *”They will say, “Our Lord, you have caused us to be dead twice, and twice you have given us life! Now we acknowledge our sins. So is there any way out?”* (Quran 40:11) Therefore, this is all to say that these people who allegedly “heard” or “saw” things after being clinically declared “dead,” weren’t actually dead to begin with, or else they would have to experience a minimum of 3 deaths & 3 lives, which contradicts God’s word in the Quran. And most doctors would retrospectively agree that these patients couldn’t have been absolutely “dead” in the full sense of the term; and certainly, modern medical education does not teach life after death. Also, your statement about the soul temporarily leaving the body & “levitating” and then returning to the body seems to suggest that the time of death is arbitrary & not set-in-stone, or that perhaps the angel(s) of death can possibly fail in their task of taking your soul at death, causing it to return. But God Almighty’s teachings refute both of these notions when He says clearly: *”No soul can die except by God’s permission, at a predetermined time.”* (Quran 3:145) And He further says, about this “predetermined time” of death: *”He is the Supreme above His servants! And He constantly sends protection over you all, until, when death overtakes any one of you, Our envoys take them away-and they never fail!”* (Quran 6:61) So the ultimate Quranically-necessary conclusion here is that every human being (and presumably also the beings of the unseen realm-the Jinn) will experience death only once in this world, taking place at a predetermined time, at the hands of unfailing angels, after which there is absolutely no going back. And in this state of death, hearing & communication is not possible. 2) Not all clinical diagnoses & proclamations are correct. And they certainly shouldn’t serve as evidence for a theological issue, especially when it stands in contradiction with divine revelation, which should always take precedence. Many false & mistaken clinical statements and judgements are constantly made on a daily basis, including regarding death. Doctors & medical instrumentation are by no means infallible. And indeed, temporary postmortem brain activity is NOT the same as full-fledged hearing intelligent conversations with consciousness. 3) Even with these alleged clinical episodes with observed brain activity after death, you must realize that the activity is only temporary (usually only 10 min max). In fact, these occurrences are totally absent from the overwhelming vast majority of clinically dead individuals, which is already a major problem for the belief of conscious (or hearing) dead people; and of the rare cases of alleged “postmortem” brain activity that do occur, the brain activity is only temporary (including in your own example, where the transcendent state is temporary and then the person returns). Yet that causes huge problems for the belief of speaking to dead people, because that means their ability to hear is only temporary. That would suggest that most dead people can no longer hear anymore, which renders the act of speaking to the dead a useless one. Moreover, we can measure temporal lobe activity in the brains of dead people upon speaking to them, and we’ll get nothing back-let alone in the brain’s centers of consciousness. Or perhaps you believe it is the soul that can “hear.” But the soul has already departed-which is the very definition of death! So I think all in all, this is a classic case of holding a mistaken (religious) belief, and clinging on to weak and irrelevant scientific “evidence” in order to find support for that belief, which in this case, is not even supported-but rather denied & refuted clearly-by the very scripture of the belief’s proponent itself. I hope this all made sense. And indeed, one of the clear wisdoms behind God’s prevention of communication between the living & the dead is to prevent the excessive veneration, praise, and sought out mediation & intercession of such dead beings-a terrible practice that harbors the essence of the “shirk” that God utterly condemns & refutes, and which has corrupted many people of ancient and modern religions, unfortunately including the Muslims who engage in such practices of seeking intermediaries & intercessors among the dead, based upon their false belief that they have the ability to hear them and/or communicate with them. May God Almighty increase us all in true knowledge & firm understanding, and may He forgive us all and guide us along the straight & upright path. Peace to you, sister.

Ameena Aneesh - if those "clinically dead" people managed to give a testimony, then they weren't dead. If they came back to life, they weren't dead to begin with. "Clinical death" is a term used to describe the body going through certain processes, which can be reversible, it is not actual death itself of which we know, there is no coming back to life from.

@@celestialknight2339 the verses you quoted don’t necessarily speak against the dead hearing. Did you even listen to the explanations in the video? When Allah says you can’t make the ones in the grave hear, it’s about the disbelievers who are never going to believe, so it’s like they already dead; when you’re dead it is over, you can’t do anything to save yourself anymore. Both opinions are valid.
@celestialknight23394 жыл бұрын
@@amiram10 Yes, but don’t you see the folly of that explanation? An analogy or parable is ONLY as effective as the metaphorical parallel which it is referring to being actually true. So for example, you can’t say “he’s as slow as a cheetah!” because cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world; so the analogy is downright nonsensical. Similarly, it is irrational to say that the dead can actually hear us from their graves, and yet God Almighty is presenting a parable relating to real-life, in which he declares that the dead (i.e disbelievers) cannot hear (i.e can’t believe). So even if the meaning of these verses is not the literal interpretation, the conclusion that the dead can’t hear is nonetheless firm and sound due to the fact that such a conclusion is required to make any sense of the analogy provided. But I think at the root of this issue lies the real problem-and that is the fact that traditional Islam has been consumed by the Hadith literature and the so-called “Prophetic Sunnah” which is literally nowhere to be found or explicitly mentioned in the Quran as a co-equal divine source of law & guidance (as it is treated). The truth is-we as Muslims have adopted these works of literature and have falsely elevated it to the status of divine revelation with no right or authority from God, and have thereby fallen into the same trap as the previous scripture-nations before us, such as the Jews (who have adopted the Talmud as a divinely-inspired commentary of the Torah) and the Christians (who have adopted Paul’s pagan writings and given them precedence over Jesus’ original message of pure monotheism. And so here, we find just one example among countless, of contradictions between the so-called “Sahīh” Hadith and Quran, as we continue to mistakenly intermix them and taint God’s pure & perfect word (the Quran) with the historically dubious and contradiction-filled literature of Hadith. And I can’t help but think that if the Prophet Muhammad was quoted in a Hadith as having stated the above verses from his own lips (about the dead not being able to hear), rather than it being by the words of God Almighty Himself-then our “scholars” would have taken them much more seriously, and we wouldn’t be debating this issue any longer. Salam.
@amiram104 жыл бұрын
@@celestialknight2339 Ok, you're clearly one of the people who reject Hadith (called Mu'tazila I believe?). Here.. I'll explain to you further. 1) the explanation you provided about the metaphor doesn't change anything about the argument. Even people who use this verse as an evidence that the dead cannot hear understand the metaphor and that the verse is comparing disbelievers to dead people because they don't understand, but because of the actual text they say the dead cannot hear, and that's of course a valid interpretation, but the other opinion is also valid and as mentioned in the lecture, we'll never know for sure until we are dead ourselves. Also, in the verse you quoted Allah says "Allah causes whomever he pleases to hear" so taken just literally like you seem to prefer, it can very easily mean that Allah can make whomever he wants of the dead hear, so you cannot completely deny that the dead cannot hear anything at all. Also, to give you a clearer example, verse 42 from surah Yunus, "and amongst them are some who listen to you, so can you make the deaf hear even if they don't understand?" Allah is calling them deaf after saying that they listen and then says that they're deaf because they don't understand. This verse clearly mixes the listening and understanding together as one thing, because the disbelievers are as if they were deaf because they don't understand and Iman does not enter their hearts. Also, Allah uses the metaphor of life and death to describe believers and disbelievers in more than one place in the Quran. It is known. 2) We are Muslims who follow our prophet and messenger Muhammad PBUH, but how would that make any sense if we don't know his story properly?! Sure, there are many things in the Quran about the story of our prophet, but we can't understand properly without the additional information from the Seerah, see #4. The story of our prophet is preserved in the Sunnah that Allah preserved for us. 3) True, Hadith is not the word of God, and nobody treats it as such, that's why it's Hadith and not Quran, that's why we are allowed to criticise Hadith under certain conditions, and most importantly, that is why there are very strict rules to accept a Hadith as authentic. Do you know how the studies of Hadith work? 4) The Quran itself is an evidence that Hadith is an important part of the faith. Many verses of the Quran came down at certain incidents in the life of the prophet and cannot be properly explained (sometimes at all) without knowing the story behind them from the seerah, so how would you achieve this without Sunnah? Also for example, the most important part of our religion, Salah (prayer): while the prayer itself is mentioned in Quran many times, the Quran doesn't say anything about how and when to pray. The times of the prayers and how many raka'as and all the details of the prayers you can only find in Sunnah, so are you going to reject the five prayers and how they're done and claim that we should just pray however we like? You can't, even if you actually wanted to, because... Allah says in the Quran: "Guard strictly your prayers and the Middle Prayer; and stand before Allah in a devout (frame of mind)." 2:238. This verse clearly indicates that there is a specific set of prayers that a Muslim has to keep and that the number of these prayers is odd since there is a middle prayer. Allah also says: "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." 4:103. So the prayers have specific times for them. So where do we learn about these things? In the Sunnah. Much salam.

I would like to know how long the dead remains in the grave to hear from anyone visiting them. In places like India (I don't know about other places) dead are buried in the same grave after a certain period of time. Do all the dead remain there till the trumpet is blown? Whether they are shifted somewhere else or goes to sleep or are tormented in the grave? Under these conditions how can they hear if anyone is visiting their graves?

Marvin Howells *“The living and the dead are not the same! **_But as for the dead,_** God will resurrect them; then to Him they will be returned.”* (Quran 6:36) Salam ‘alaikum. Which of the undeniably clear & general statements above indicate to you, in even the slightest bit, that the Prophet Muhammad-who is dead-can hear us on earth? Does he hear all people who speak to him near his grave? Doesn’t this mean he constantly hears (and can’t understand) a jumbled word salad from the multitudes of people who visit his grave and speak all at once? Or has God given him a special divine power to sort out all that is said to him? Does he ever fail to hear something like you and I sometimes may fail to hear something correctly when it is said the first time? Or has God corrected that for him as well? Can we speak to the prophet Muhammad from just his grave, or from anywhere in the world? Does farther distance mean harder hearing, like here on earth? And if you can speak to him from anywhere on earth, doesn’t that mean you can call out to him to be your intercessor & mediator in asking God to forgive you for your sins (which in fact some self-proclaimed Muslims believe & practice, but which is unfortunately among the essence of ‘shirk’ that the Quran and very concept & definition of ‘Islam’ (complete & unconditional surrender and devotion to God alone’) utterly condemns)? You need to answer these questions and have these parameters clearly defined if you wish to hold on to such extraordinary beliefs. But if you choose to listen to God’s clear revelations as I’ve quoted above (with many more divine statements included), the matter becomes clear: *Regardless of identity-the dead CANNOT hear.*

@@celestialknight2339 what is wrong with you? Forget the dead not being able to hear, you can't even read. Why you talking about the prophet peace be upon him not being able to hear from the grave when the brothers comment didn't mention anything about it? This is what happens when you just copy and paste the same comment everywhere, you end up looking like an idiot.
@celestialknight23394 жыл бұрын
Epik There is nothing “wrong with me” for simply giving a full & elaborate response to the brother’s comment. I was not just blindly copying & pasting, despite your false assumptions. My response had perfect relevance to both the idea behind the brother’s comment as well as to the content of the lecture itself (which the brother is obviously expected to have heard for him to make his comment). So I humbly advise you to not go around making such baseless accusations, which give off an aura of anger & arrogance, as they make only you yourself appear to have the distasteful qualities & persona that you sadly wish to attach on others. So now, dear brother, instead of providing me with another fruitless reply & insult against my person or anyone else’s person, do you actually have anything intellectual to say (whether in agreement or disagreement) as to the actual substance of my theological points above? I would be more than happy to have a friendly and civilized Quranic-based discussion with you on this topic, if you are interested. Salam.

@amiram104 жыл бұрын
The Quran doesn’t say the dead cannot hear the living people. Some Sahaba and scholars have understood it this way, like Aisha (R), but it doesn’t necessarily mean that. The verses talk about people being metaphorically deaf because they aren’t listening to the truth and following it, and Allah tells the prophet that he cannot make the disbelievers hear and understand and be guided and that it is like he’s talking to dead people, because the dead have no chance of coming back to life to become righteous. Once you’re dead it’s over, and Allah is talking about those disbelievers who were never going to believe, so they’re like dead people.

I am not a scholar but i strongly believe dead cant hear. Ayesha R.A was right and it is not necessary that our beloved sahaba R.A always understood everything rightly. Quran says dead cant hear, this needs to be understood unbiasedly. Dead are in another world and another phase. If they keep on hearing us, their that worldly sequence of events will be disturbed. You yourself said pious deceaseds are sleeping and the bad ones are getting azaab. If they keep on hearing us, i can go to my father's grave everyday and keep telling him what i wish to. I can ask forgiveness from him for any regrets or guilts that I feel related to him. But this isnt the case. We need to understand dead is a dead. He is busy with other things now.

With all due respect i would advise the Sheikh not to say "It doesn't make sense" when he quotes some Ahadeeth from the Prophet that may not be easily understood. Even if these Ahadeeth are of weak narration and if the Sheikh has different understanding, it is never recommended to allude to these Ahadeeth from Prophet as "Non sense" Sometimes it is better to be silent on certain issues, or better yet to say, I don't know.

When it comes to these kind of issues a difference in opinion is not a big issue. Whether or not the dead can hear has no affect on us what's so ever and if it did the Prophet ﷺ would have explicitly clarified the matter. Also no scholar is gaining any sort of "power" by stating an opinion about this kind of matter so I don't know what you're on about.

To understand the ruh and barzakh you have to be man of Allah. you need a spiritual eye.......you are not blessed by marifah and hakikath......... read some book of tasawuff that may inspire you to know something about spiritual world.
