(1) Can we make dua in Urdu or any other language other than Arabic in nafl salah? (2) What should I do to learn Arabic? Please make dua for me. بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم (Fatwa: 368/319/SN=04/1437) (1) Whether it is fardh salah or nafl salah it is unlawful and makrooh tahrimi to read dua in Urdu, English or any language other than Arabic. However you may supplicate Allah in any language after completing your salah. (2) It is better if you join any madrasa and study Arabic as well as other sciences. If not, then read Arabic language by any reliable and competent Alim on daily basis as per his guidance. Also try to learn Arabic through studying Arabic books and listening to Arabic lectures. Allah knows Best! Darul Ifta, Darul Uloom Deoband

Episode 8 & 9 Notes: Gifting Deeds to the Dead What can the living do to benefit the Dead? This is an Aqeedah and Fiqh issue. However, there are certain deeds which are established from the Hadith, to benefit a deceased Muslim Actions that benefit a deceased Muslim if done by a living Muslim: The below actions are from Authentic Hadiths and thus agreed upon by scholars: Any Sadaqah Jaariyah the deceased did during their life. i.e perpetual charity. A righteous child who prays for his deceased parents. Beneficial knowledge that the dead left behind. This would Include any Dawah they gave. When the living makes Dua for the deceased. When the living makes Istighfar for the deceased. When the living gives Sadaqah on behalf of the deceased. When the living gives Sadaqah Jaariyah on behalf of the deceased. (Giving a water well especially is encouraged.) When the living Muslim does Hajj & Umrah for the deceased. You can do the 1 Fardh Hajj and any extra Nafl Hajj for the deceased. However, you can only do this, if you have done your own 1 Fardh Hajj first. Hajj and Umrah can be done for any Muslim meaning it isn’t limited to parents. Doing the Qadha fasting of the deceased parent. Children should make up the Qadha Fardh fasts of their parents. Children are allowed to split the Qadha fasts between themselves or pay fidyah, if they are unable to do them. Doing Nafl Fasting on behalf of the deceased. Giving Udhiyah on behalf of the deceased parents. 5 Things a child can do after their parents die: 1. Make Dua for them. 2. Make Istighfar for them. 3. Fulfil any oaths or promises they made prior to death. 4. Visit their family and friends. 5. Be generous with their friends The View of the 4 Fiqh Schools: Abu Hanifa RH and the Hanafi Madhab as a whole, has been the most consistent in their view on this topic. Hanafi’s believe its allowed to give any good deed to as gift to the deceased. This includes even giving Salaah, Fasting and Reciting Quran. Most of them even allow gifting of good deeds to the living. Imam Al Shafi RH believed nothing other Fasting, Sadaqah, Dua and istighfar can be gifted to the dead. However over the course of history, the Shafi Madhab has completely changed its view on this. This change first occurred in Medieval times and eventually it became the majority. Shafi Fiqh now permits the gifting any good deeds to the deceased, including reciting the Quran. This is the dominant position now and Imam Shafi’s RH view is discarded. Imam Malik RH, like Imam Al Shafi RH, believed nothing other Fasting, Sadaqah, Dua and istighfar can be gifted to the dead. The Maliki Madhab during the course of history, had a second view which permits the gifting of good deeds. However unlike Shafi Fiqh, there are two opinions in Maliki Fiqh on this issue. The first is those who follow Imam Malik RHs view and the second is those who permit gifting of good deeds. The Hanbali Fiqh school and its founder Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal RH, allowed the gifting of good deeds, without any restrictions including Quran. Generally, they didn’t allow gifting good deeds to the living, unlike the Hanafi’s. Ibn Qudama, Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Qayyim held the same view as early Hanbali’s. Ibn Qayyim RH went on to give many reasons, for why he believes gifting good deeds is allowed. He mentioned how Hadiths are explicit on Hajj, Sadaqah, Fasting being giftable. He then extrapolated this out to any good deeds even reciting Qur’an. Furthermore, Ibn Qayyim RH mentioned how we cannot prove or disprove, if the Salaf recited Quran and did Salaah for the deceased. Ibn Taymiyyah was not against people coming together as a group, in order to recite Quran for the deceased. But, he disliked money being involved or the Qurah being paid to recite. Conclusion Essentially, the entire Ummah generally believes its allowed to gift good deeds to the dead and the only ones who strongly counter this, is the Salafist/Wahabist movements. It is important to mention, gifting your good deeds to someone, means you lose the reward for that good deed and it goes to the person you gifted it too. At the same time, you should hope Allah SWT will give you, the good deed of giving away your precious good deed, to a loved one. Also theoretically speaking. it is possible for Allah SWT to give both the deceased and you the good deed, for what you gave away. But this isn’t promised anywhere. So we should be wise and ensure we leave good deeds for ourselves too. Lastly good deeds like a Hajj, can be given to more than one person meaning good deeds can be split and given to multiple people. Fun Trivia fact: The best time to make Dua for someone who has died, is during their Salaat Al Janazah and right after they are buried. Fun Trivia fact: Only say good things about the deceased after their death. Fun Trivia fact: A Nadhr is a vow that one makes to Allah SWT and it must be kept. It usually involves the Muslim saying “Oh Allah, if you give me x I will do y”. These must be kept. Fun Trivia fact: Hajj Badal, is when a Muslim performs Hajj on behalf of someone who is unable to perform it i.e because they are ill, disabled or dead. Fun Trivia fact: There is a narration which mentions, you should recite Surah Yasin at the bed of a Muslim who is about to die. This is because Surah Yasin can ease the Sakarat Al Maut. ======================================================================== Disclaimer for my Notes of Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Life in the Barzakh Series Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, these are my notes on Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Life in the Barzakh series. Please note: I HIGHLY recommend that you all watch YQ’s Barzakh series, as I DON’T cover every single detail the Sheikh mentions. I made these notes primarily for myself but, decided my fellow brothers and sisters may benefit from them too. I no doubt will have made mistakes in my notes. All the good in these notes is from Allah SWT and all the mistakes are from myself. But, I was very meticulous and tried my best to make sure everything is accurate as the Sheikh mentions it. You also will see I have added “Fun Trivia facts” under each of my notes. These FTFs are information YQ said that was off topic or not necessary to include in my notes for the episode. But, they were still worth mentioning hence the inclusion as FTFs. FTFs aren’t always HAPPY pieces of information. Sometimes they are very sad trivia. I just want to say that FTF is the phrase I used for them all collectively when making the notes. One thing I wanted to do but am too lazy to do is, maybe someone could take the FTFs from under each “Episode” and make an Islamic reminder/information IG/TikTok account and post them daily or something. It Could be a great form of Sadaqah Jaariyah. Lastly, I have uploaded the notes to Dropbox, if anyone wants them in one document then comment below. I also have done notes on Sheikh YQs Seerah series and Mothers of the Believers series. You can find them below the episodes on his channel in comments. Please keep me in your Duas and ask Allah SWT to forgive all our sins. Ameen!
