Actually, Schlitzie was VERY well taken care of for the day. Many people like him were locked up in draconian institutions, because it was the norm. When you realize how new psychology is in the field of medicine, and under standing of mental defects is even newer, Schlitzie really didn't have a bad life, and there are well documented instances of him being happy and affectionate.

I know the case of a lady who died and her daughter could not afford a headstone. Some years later, the dead lady's grand daughter was able to buy one and took her mother to the cemetery so she could see the headstone. The mother was very surprised and moved . To her, the headstone was important. As for the daughter, even though she loved her grandmother deeply, she didn't care about headstones, just did it to make her mother happy.

I’m have Anorexia, Major Depression, and Generalized Anxiety. When I went to treatment for my eating disorder, the patients were some of the most intelligent, kind hearted people I’ve ever met. They made me feel safe and at home. We’re not as bad as people say we are, we are just normal people with a bit more issues and that’s OK

When Schlitzie was younger (1:48) I can see that he would have been a nice looking man if he wasn't born with microcephaly. Sad that he was mistreated by some but he looked genuinely happy while performing in the circus. RIP Schlitzie. You are loved by many.

Saikiran S - So? How is that related to this story ? This poor creature surely loved himself, was happy with what he was doing, surely wasn't hard on himself (why should he? He didn't even notice people looked at him as a freak) , and I guess part of his life was kind of peaceful. What failed here were the "normal" people who took him for a monster , people who paid to see those "freaks". They are the ones who should learn to respect , help and not treat disabled people as monsters.

VanillaSoul Everybody is a product of their environment to one degree or another and we should not judge the past too harshly, even though I do believe in absolute truths. There are probably a dozen things that you do which would be seen as immoral in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Throwing stones at the past should be done carefully when living in a glass house.

WHILE WATCHING THIS I BECAME " TEARY"..AS MY FIRST JOB INVOLVED WORKING WITH SUCH CHILDREN WITH VARYING DEFORMITIES AND MENTAL DEFICITS...THESE CHILDREN LIVED AT HOME,BUT ATTENDED A DEVELOPMENTAL SCHOOL DURING THE DAY; AND THE LOVE AND DEVOTION OF THEIR PARENTS WAS "OUTSTANDING"...I WAS YOUNGER AT THE TIME..BUT I DEVELOPED AN APPRECIATION AND LOVE GREW FOR THESE KIDS..WHO WERE OFTEN STARED AT FOR THEIR OBVIOUS DIFFERENCES....THAT WAS OVER 35 YEARS AGO...BUT THOSE MEMORIES HAVE STAYED WITH ME..AND A COMPASSION AND EMPATHY THAT NEVER LEFT AND HAS STAYED WITH ME SO MUCH SO THAT YEARS LATER ON WHEN I HAD MY OWN CHILD...I WAS EVEN MORE GRATEFUL..FOR HAVING A HEALTHY CHILD. I know people didn't have the knowledge that we have today , but it just makes me feel sad , and kinda angry that disabled people were really mistreated , back then. I am a Para - Educator for students with disabilities , and I know it was "back in those days" but , it still hurts to see people that were disabled treated this way.

Dis you people read the damn story?! He MISSED the sideshow life and his health started to DECLINE due to this. A performer who visited the hospital lobbied them to allow Shlitzie to return to the sideshow which is what HE wanted. Yes it was a choice and it obviously made him happy.

Bingo. Why is this labeled sad? He lived to be 70, was cared for by a lot of people who had some affection for him, was apparently never homeless or hungry. A happier life than many humans have had.
