The Story Behind

Күн бұрын

Schlitzie had the mental capacity of a 3-year-old even in his adulthood. He could only speak in short sentences and phrases. Dressed as a girl, he performed in various sideshows throughout his life. Schlitzie had a rare condition called microcephaly. It causes deformation of a brain, skull, and body. The disease can lead to epilepsy, learning disabilities, and issues with hearing and vision. Most sources agree that Schlitzie was born in 1901. But many argue about his real name. It could be Simon Metz or Shlitze Surtees. It is believed that Schlitzie was born in a wealthy family but he was abandoned. Then, he changed many foster parents. In circuses, Schlitzie was billed as “The Monkey Girl” and “The Last of the Aztecs”. He performed as a female wearing dresses on stage. Dresses made it easier for his handlers to take care of him as he suffered from incontinence. Schlitzie’s fame skyrocketed in 1932 when he appeared in the film Freaks. This movie was about love and betrayal in a circus. It is well-known for featuring a number of real sideshow freaks, like Schlitzie. The movie was highly criticized for its grotesque horror involving the freaks. The Hollywood Reporter called it an outrageous onslaught upon the feelings, the senses, the brains and the stomachs of an audience. One woman wanted to sue MGM claiming that the movie caused a miscarriage. Despite all the negativity around the film, Schlitzie became a star. He was cute and innocent always charming people around him. In 1936, a chimp trainer George Surtees adopted Schlitzie. Surtees loved Schlitzie and took care of him until Surtees’ death in 1965. Surtees’ daughter sent Schlitzie to a mental hospital in Los Angeles. He stayed there for three years. Schlitzie missed circus life and his health began to decline. A sword swallower Bill Unks recognized Schlitzie during his performance in the hospital. Unks lobbied the hospital to make him Schlitzie’s caregiver. The hospital allowed Schlitzie to return to sideshows. He performed a few times with the Dobritch International Circus. Schlitzie retired in Los Angeles. Despite his fame, he didn’t have a home or a fortune. In retirement Schlitzie still entertained people by feeding pigeons and ducks at the park. He died in 1971, at the age of 70. Schlitzie was buried in a simple unmarked grave. But in 2007, a fan raised money to install a proper headstone.

Actually, Schlitzie was VERY well taken care of for the day. Many people like him were locked up in draconian institutions, because it was the norm. When you realize how new psychology is in the field of medicine, and under standing of mental defects is even newer, Schlitzie really didn't have a bad life, and there are well documented instances of him being happy and affectionate.

Some years later, the dead lady's grand daughter was able to buy one and took her mother to the cemetery so she could see the headstone. The mother was very surprised and moved . Saikiran S - So? How is that related to this story ? This poor creature surely loved himself, was happy with what he was doing, surely wasn't hard on himself (why should he? He didn't even notice people looked at him as a freak) , and I guess part of his life was kind of peaceful. What failed here were the "normal" people who took him for a monster , people who paid to see those "freaks". They are the ones who should learn to respect , help and not treat disabled people as monsters.

I know people didn't have the knowledge that we have today , but it just makes me feel sad , and kinda angry that disabled people were really mistreated , back then. I am a Para - Educator for students with disabilities , and I know it was "back in those days" but , it still hurts to see people that were disabled treated this way.

I watched this with a good deal of sadness. My grandson suffers the same issue but far worse. He neither speaks, walks talks or can feed himself. He is fed through a PEG. When born the doctors gave him 2 years -- he is now 13 thanks to the love and devotion of his mum and his many friends and relatives He is the most beautiful human being. Imperfectly perfect

This reminds me of a book I read called Flowers for Algenon. The main character was also happy as he wasn’t aware that he had a disability. The story revolves around him going through surgery to make him smarter. He was more measurable the smarter he was. Algernon is the name of the mouse who they first tried this surgery in before experimenting on humans. It is a very interesting book. There is also an American movie and a Japanese series which I totally loved.

How nice of you to bring up such a provocative movie. I enjoyed both the book and the movie. How true it was that Charley had no idea his friends at work were making fun of him until the experiment. It was a good thing he regressed to the same mentally challenged man he was. How like Schlitzie who also could not know when people would mock him.

It’s not that sad a life. He got to often do what he loved. So many don’t. And he would not have understood having a fortune anyhow, so that was irrelevant. He seemed a naturally happy soul. How many people are born with that? I’ve not been naturally burdened with THAT trait, lol. Thank you for telling this tale. Extraordinary

The greed of humans, on expanse of people that dont have a back, a care taker, a family, took advantage of this pure soul and it's so infuriating! He looks so happy and seem kind. Free spirit. Not only that nobody cared for him, but he used to feed animals... That is a human being in his purest form. RIP pure soul. Gone but never forgotten. For the people who made money of his "deformity"... You who are really deformed. Monsteres of fame and money... How could they have let him go with nothing to his name? Im sorry this world has failed you my friend and hope that you are in a better place.
