Every time I revisit this movie I still can't believe that it didn't win any Oscars. Honestly, both of the leads *really* deserved one. And as far as I'm concerned it was the best picture of 2019.

@@folkblues4u Bro, Joaquin Phoenix won best actor that year. Also nominated were DiCaprio, Adam Driver, and Jonathan Pryce. Best supporting nominations were Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Pacino, and Pesci. If you somehow think it's not fashionable to award things to white guys, you need to get off the internet, and go outside.

I always think of the fact that a 28 year old & his brother wrote this film. I hate the word “masterpiece” nowadays cus so many people just casually throw that word around about films they won’t remember in 3 months... but I am quite comfortable calling this film a masterpiece which is quite an accomplishment given this is only the second film Robert Eggers had made, impressive stuff

the best horror comes from the lack of an ability to trust your own recollection and perception of events. this is why david lynch's films say so much without ever really answering your questions. they just leave you with this feeling that something truly profound and deep and emotional happened, without ever really feeling like you fully understand exactly the who what when why and how of things. it creates a dreamlike sense of disbelief, and i think this film does something very similar. and it only ever really gets there once the drinking starts, and that was very clever.

Brushing up on your Greek mythology is helpful, especially Prometheus, and your various other sea related mythology as well. There’s a fair amount of subtext in this film, that makes it all the more enjoyable when you dive into it.

Salt doesn't evaporate with seawater, so the rainwater is drinkable, but it doesn't provide any sustenance. Alcohol has a surprising number of kilocalories in it, plus staying constantly drunk makes the hunger pangs easier to suffer. It's not a great long-term survival strategy, obviously.

Robert Pattinson is very meticulous about how he approaches movies, he likes to be extremely prepared and know how everything backwards and forwards and Robert Eggers said that for this movie Dafoe was basically like "Yeah, nah" and intentionally did stuff that wasn't in the script and was just generally very weird to try and throw Pattinson off his game and mess with him, so a lot of Pattinson's overall "BRO WTF" vibe in this movie is actually real

People that only have seen Robert Pattinson in Twilight think he isn’t a good actor and he is amazing, one of the best of his generation and he should’ve been nominated for his performance in this movie but of course because it’s horror and this genre is underrated and mostly in acting performances he wasn’t nominated, neither was Willem Dafoe. Robert Pattinson was great in The Batman and Good Times, so at least I would love to see you guys react to The Batman.

Robert Pattinson gave it his all in this crazy psychological horror thriller film! And Willem Dafoe is both insane and creepy on this as well, playing mind games with Pattinson as he claims that they've been on the island for a week, a month, or a year.

Curious thing: the script is *very* much framed upon The Shining (movie, not book.) Aside from Tom(s) having always been the lighthouse keeper, there are scene-for-scene parallels throughout. And also Greek mythology, the Poe story The Light-House, Lovecraft, some true stories, and likely more stuff influenced this.

The movie is steeped in old sailor folklore and is so period realistic. It is beyond haunting and so perfectly acted!! Robert Eggers is so dedicated to making his movies period correct. This movie catches the madness of isolation like no other movie ever has. Why both actors weren't both nominated for Academy Awards is beyond me. This movie is actually based on a true story and also got it's dialogue from old diaries kept by people who actually did this job in the period it takes place in, eggers added the folklore as well. Hopefully you will both be watching The Northman since you have already seen The VVitch. All of his movies have been period pieces that are also very accurate to the time period. Eggers is a stickler for being period correct down to every detail and is currently working on the remake of Nosferatu.

The director said that if explained the movie to you, it would drive you mad. I'm paraphrasing but he basically said that you're better off not looking into the light of the lighthouse. Just go with whatever theory you want. For me, Dafoe was dead and in his mind.

In the 40s or 50s on old time radio there was an awesome spooky "Three Skeleton Key" lighthouse tale with a younger Vincent Price that I was really hoping this was going to be an adaption of. Oh well, still eerie fun. And such a great idea for it to be in B&W.

There are lots of ways to interpret the meaning; seafaring folklore, a take on the Prometheus myth, a guilty man trying to get into heaven and being cast down... or just two guys going crazy in dire circumstances. But what doesn't get mentioned a lot is the humour (and not just the farts) - to me it's almost an even split of horror and dark comedy.

I've watched it twice in the cinema back then. Great movie, just over all amazing. The most depressing part of the film in my opinion was the constant sound of the horn... It haunts ;)

I think it was Dafoe that called his character's farts "weaponized." They were used aggressively and to make/emphasize a point. lol And Dafoe's long-ass, sea curse onw-shot is one of the most amazing pieces of art I think any of us have seen. Also Pattinson going from Harry Potter and Twilight to really having himself a great, eclectic career is awesome. Same with Daniel Radcliffe. They couldve milked straight forward easy roles but they really went out there and wanted more. Re: the rain, to me they were too fargone to be rational about water. And I think it gave them an excuse to drink more. Oh, sorry, one more thing: If you want to see more Pattinson, he's AMAZING in Good Time, which itself is very very good. I think it's still on Netflix. He's also really good as secondary characters in The Rover and The Lost City of Z, which are also really good films in their own right.

This is one of my favorite movies of the past few years. Saw it in the theater, then spent an hour and a half in the parking lot discussing it with the friends I saw it with. Career defining performances, and direction by a visionary director. Amazing movie. Please watch The VVitch and The Northman, also by Eggers.

It's definitely a movie that welcomes additional watches. Without dictating or going into annoying detail, my eventual take was that Tom (as In Dafoe) "ain't human no more" (as Ephraim says at one point), or never was, Ephraim is a murderer, and the lighthouse isn't really a lighthouse. Have fun watching it again!

@@tutorialslave I don't know about purgatory exactly, but something like that. I like the way the light doesn't actually fulfil the purpose of a lighthouse - in fact it's the opposite, since it's supposed to ward people off and instead it draws them in. I think Winslow is right and Tom did kill his previous assistant, but not in the simple murder that Winslow is imagining. Maybe the previous assistant had a crime in his background similar to Winslow's, as a result of which he's drawn to the lighthouse to be driven mad (prepared) and sacrificed/punished. And maybe they have a chance to not be sacrificed/punished, but lose that chance by doing certain things - killing the gull, attacking Tom, etc. That was what I came away with after three times in the cinema. I think it's also not a film that you can just say 'this is what happened:' though, so I don't trust anyone who does say that haha

there's a lot of interesting background stuff to dig into with this one, like the painting that inspired that one infamous shot (willem dafoe's eys shining light on pattinson), the greek and roman mythology you brought up, obviously lovecraftian and melville influences (i think the light itself represents obsession, the same way moby dick did), or just the fact that this movie was based on a true story...

This film was filmed with this aspect ratio is the actual size of screens they used back in the day. It was in black and white but they used a cena filter so you can see every pore of their skin and bring forward their performances. The mermaids vagina was made as a Sperm Whale’s vagina. Pattinson always has a scene of him masterbating in each film. (Not the Twilight series.) in this film he had three. Yes, Defoe’s accent was dead on, as is the writing, for the time period that this took place. Chef’s Kiss!!! This is the best acting by Pattinson, bar none. Dafoe is always the actor that will hang out with the other actors, the the director, the crew. But Pattinson wants to be left alone during a shoot. He internalizes his character and lets it all out on the screen. Neither way is better than the other, but if you wanna make friends in this industry, I went the way of Defoe. When I was filming, I’d even go and help out the PA’s or craft services. In one scene the wind was so high and cold, I had to stand on the sand bags to add more weight so the light wouldn’t shake during the take. Hard work but a fun shoot over all.

My favorite film in many many years alongside Everything Everywhere All At Once. Pacing, mood, cinematography, sound design, set design, performances - all flawless. How Pattinson and Dafoe got snubbed at the Oscars is beyond me. The Northman left me a bit underwhelmed but The VVitch and The Lighthouse are amazing and Robert Eggers is a def a director to keep your eye on.

You are my favorite reactors. Given that you enjoyed this film so much, I recommend you take a look at the works of David Lynch. I saw you watched Dune, but that is not a good representation of his work...even he didn't like that one. I would suggest you watch Blue Velvet, and if you like that, take a look at a slightly more challenging film, Eraserhead. Thanks again for your intelligent reviews.

This film is definition of _MADNESS._ As someone who currently thinks their on the edge and maybe developing mild schizophrenia... It's SORT of fun at times. Madness is MOSTLY terrifying, but kind of fun. But the fun is SOOO fun, that you kind of just deal with the terrifying. That's why this film has a mild form of comedy to it, it's madness by definition.

Im in the minority, I didn't like this movie. To me it's a weird slow burn art house film that intentionally doesn't have any clear story so the audience can just come up with their own theories and meanings behind everything. Open to interpretation basically. Which I've never liked in a story.

See, it's funny, I don't disagree with your assessment of the film; your summary of it is 100% accurate. The only difference is that these are all the reasons why I like this film. Same thing with The Green Knight, it didn't get a very warm reception, even from a lot of people who are typically fans of A24 films; but something about the open-ended nature of the story got under my skin and had me going back to it for multiple viewings. Watched it both times on a round trip flight to and from Vegas.

I’m so excited y’all watched this! It’s one of my favorite movies made within the last few years, besides Mandy. 🖤🤍 I saw it 3x in theaters when it came out, & was transfixed every time. The scene where Dafoe looks down upon Pattinson with glowing eyes is inspired by the painting “Hypnose” by Sascha Schneider!
