I wish people understood these are marketing tactics. It’s called “farming controversy” it happened in making the little mermaid black, making tinkerbell and the blue fairy black (disney knows this farms insane amounts of controversy and gets everyone talking) it also happened with Velma. Because the things that are controversial are paid attention to and then green-lit. No such no thing as bad publicity. And when everyone fights about this they’re fighting a manufactured boogey-man. We should simply ignore this souless live actions and reboots and demand new projects with new characters or look for them elsewhere. Edit: Representation is not bad. Having black/POC/gay characters is not bad. The thing is taking an existing character and changing their features that creates bad faith. Nowadays studios are creatively bankrupt and only like to work with pre-existing media which is why we have all these reboots

I don't understand why people are upset about fictional characters though... Mermaids stem from African culture but no one talks about that fairies from Ireland ... Unfortunately Disney doesn't have any new ideas, but I just don't see the problem with making Ariel black except for Hallie not being a redhead if they wanted to make her black they should of found an actual black redhead girl, but people will always have a problem with something but if they believed Hallie was the best fit black or white 🤷🏾‍♀️ I just don't like how they use these people and then the world well America shows their true colors ...
@Austin-kt7ky
@Austin-kt7ky Жыл бұрын
@@nenep1872 The issue isn't that a fictional character is a certain race, it's that their original race had to be changed to pander to a specific demographic. Same rules would apply with changing a character's sex. If somebody wanted to tell a story, they should tell their own story instead of leeching off of somebody else's so they can soapbox for attention.
@-mothman-
@-mothman- Жыл бұрын
How I've been able to accurately summarize my stance: the problem isn't the race swapping itself, it's more about why were they swapped in the first place. Was it done simply as another take on the character, to take the original concept and translate it with these new ideas? Or, in Disney's case.. Likely nothing about the script or characterization will change- they're simply swapped for the sake of being swapped, and as other people have pointed out, is most likely a publicity stunt.

Disney has made and assisted in making movies in the past few years and I'm tired of people thinking they've not. The real problem is why they can't re-release these films in cinemas rather than riding on a classic for nostalgia reasons. In contrast to this, animated movies like 'Raya and the Last Dragon' and 'Onward' were both advertised as representing something (South-east Asians and homosexuals respectively) but each weren't respected in the slightest and were only used for marketing purposes. Now to call the mermaid film remake's marketing revolving around ragebait is overblown. When it came out, I saw the trailers and thought "I'm tired of Disney's shameless remakes, why is it so dark and drab like the Lion King?". I didn't dislike the black actress, in fact I think Disney let her down by taking the wrong creative direction. If the effects were more lively, brighter, colourful and cheerier, then I would've definitely seen it, but after watching the Lion King adaption I knew I'd fall asleep halfway through, just like I did for that film.
@rainpuppies
@rainpuppies Жыл бұрын
@@scrittle I understand what you mean, and I think these two points can co-exist. 1. These movies are soulless remakes to ride a wave of nostalgia instead of making their own new scripts. The reason they don’t re-release the originals in theaters is simply because they believe they won’t make as much money, live-action is the new hot thing. 2. It is absolutely farming controversy. If you looked at the state of youtube, twitter , facebook when the trailer came out you would see how everyone flipped their shit and the new black mermaid. It was trending everywhere. Disney knows this creates controversy more than gay characters, more than anything, and thus keeps repeating this pattern. Which sucks since an actor of a different race shouldn’t create this type of stir but this is sadly the world we live in and big corporations know it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I do know other self-made independent studio animations/live-action are doing better and creating new ideas without Disney in the mix. You get tickets, emails with coupons and the first viewer experience in watching the film and rating it before being sent to a few theatres. We wouldn't even have such arguments over skin colour and colourism if Hollywood didn't start with this in 2015. Before that year, no one really made such a big deal about these topics.. While I am against black washing. Ur argument is disingenuous, Ariel is a mermaid,non-human, and represents no culture compared to Mulan,lilo and stitch, Anastasia, jasmine,encanto. All the character I named are based on real ppl and culture so changing their wouldn’t make their story make sense. Like putting a blk person as Mulan will make the story nonsensical. My main message is the race and culture is important in lilo and stitch but not in the little mermaid. The actor who play Nani simply just doesn’t look like her, simply as that. I also can flip the script and say the casting choice takes away from darker skinned Hawaiian/Asians. We know the history of colonization and white beauty standards. So wouldn’t disneys casting also be helping the white standard.

@@buttertoast8613 This argument is just as disingenuous. Disney's Ariel is a redhead. It's banking on the Nostalgia and making everything as close as possible to the 80's one, only blackwashing Ariel as they have been blackwashing most redheads. Also gonna say something about the new Snow White not being white? That is literally in the name.

Fun fact, in south africa we have a holiday called heritage day. It's a day where we celebrate our cultural differences by coming together with wearing our traditional clothing, as well as each of us bringing food that is unique to the culture we are born to. (I think as an option) We would bust out some of our own unique cultural music and showcase our unique cultural dances. It's a nice wholesome holiday that gives us an opportunity for witnessing different perspectives, thus uniting all of us even more, emphasizing why South Africa will and forever be known as the rainbow nation. Also, during one point on a heritage day in primary school, a girl was an Egyptian and came wearing Egyptian attire. My memories are a bit rusty, but I remembered me being mind blown when my sister told me this. The girl was very light skin, with curly sleek hair.

It makes no sense for Bubbles to be removed. Same goes with lighter-toned actors as the characters. I just do hope Stitch was to be cute as he was in the original, but with the announcement of live action remakes of more recent movies like Lilo and Stitch as well as Moana(hasn't turned a decade old as of now), Disney is creatively bankrupt. Why not have these films be reintroduced into theaters instead of remaking them to appease corrupt modern-day beliefs? And when will they make good animated movies again? Never the case, cuz they are too big to fail. All we have left to trust instead of both Disney and Pixar going off the grid recently are DreamWorks, Sony, Netflix, and Laika. As a white female of German, Irish, and British descent, I was introduced to the Hawaiian culture recreated in Lilo and Stitch, making me vow to enter tropical paradise instead of hanging out in the bland urban setting of where my family and I lived. I never liked cultural appropriation of these remakes; only there to gain brownie points from fake activists than anything else or hell, even substance. Not because it's 'woke', but mismanaged and poorly executed; controversy will continue if more of these are made and advance this pandering, but my ideas mentioned prior in the comment section of the Live Action Remake Problem and when The Little Mermaid 2023 were discussed have actual representation than what we have so far.

Raya and the Last Dragon was advertised as the first south-east Asian Disney film, despite only using south-east assets as background elements in the movie. Disney claimed it was south-eastern, despite it showing more modern western traditions, humour and culture. Disney took elements they found cool and scrapped the rest, leaving a whitewashed trash heap with toxic morals for the paid "expert" critics to give 10/10 reviews. Asian voices called it out for cultural appropriation. I'm sat here waiting for Disney to focus on making animations with good stories that pay respects to its setting, and I'm surprised by this because they had no problem making Alladin and Mulan before the 2000s (not the live action tripe).

My main issue is the level of harassment the actress is being subjected to. Regardless of someone’s intentions, I view it as being equally as horrible as the harassment Halle Bailey has experienced. Both arguments are rooted from the belief that “they are unqualified for the role based on their skin tone”. Yes, I get that in this case, it’s more important that the actress is representative of the region as this movie draws more inspiration from it’s Hawaiian background than the Little Mermaid does with its background. I see the intention leading more into benevolence to try and ensure that an underrepresented group doesn’t get omitted from the narrative. But that doesn’t change how awful people are treating this poor woman. The deluge of tweets I saw after David’s actor being recast saying things like “Her next” was pretty appalling. I can’t imagine what she’s been going through because of it.

She shouldn't be harassed but she needs to be replaced. White washing people of color is not okay. I get the argument of people of different backgrounds being Hawaiian but by the same token people of different races and ethnicities are still American and you wouldn't cast a white American to play a role meant for an Asian American. Race and appearance play a big role, you can't just sweep it away and pretend white people have the same experience as people with strong ethnic characteristics. They don't. My experience as a very dark skinned black man is not the same as someone like the rapper Logic who has to say he's black for anyone to notice. Casting someone like him to play MLK would be really, really weird. That's what's happening here.

Thanks for bringing up that Nani wasn't being threatened by taking Lilo away because CPS has an agenda to colonize dark skinned families. I had to rewatch Lilo and Stitch recently because of the discourse surrounding that argument because I thought I'd missed something. But I still didn't get that take at all. CPS was fixing to take Lilo because of the family's situation. Because they could see that Nani was struggling to hold a job, that she was barely keeping the house clean, and that's why CPS was stepping in. These people using this point of colonization are just grasping at straws to validate their dislike of a lighter skinned hawaiian playing Nani.

So many people have become hyper focused on race, saying that they’re advocating for those that need representation. But as you’ve pointed out, it’s almost doing more harm than good. Many of those from Hawaiian descent aren’t just one skin tone and to say that these people aren’t “dark enough” to truly represent their culture is pretty disgusting. I think the reality is that we're blaming each other for our reactions to this, but I believe what actually is happening is Disney is intentionally creating it's own buzz by encouraging people to get angry about castings for movies that aren't going to be released for years. I've visited Hawaii and what I learned about the Hawaiian people is that they have so much hope and love, but as a black person the natives weren't shy to tell me about how they felt about their colonial history. Some recognizing that Hawaii was illegally colonized by the US. So, I get that the vast majority of Hawaiians are mixed. Still, what I think we should consider is that Disney just announced two Polynesia related movies, and from what we've seen from them we know they create buzz for themselves by engaging in racial politics. Which is why they insist black people are underrepresented, so white characters can be swapped out by them, creating hypervigilant superfans that are looking for them to include as much dark skinned representation as possible, but not understanding that even though Polynesia at large was originally a dark skinned land and people, it isn't that way today, and it is more about the people and the culture than the skin, so that same type of overly aggressive racial media warfare doesn't apply to say the least. Same thing with that Cleopatra movie, although most historians and the most evidence points to Cleopatra being Greek and therefore white by today's standards, hollywood has also consistently whitewashed Egyptian history being that the vast majority of anthropological evidence points to the first dynasties of Egypt (far earlier than Cleopatra) being negroid or black. Which the media is overcorrecting with this revisionist theory. It's the media, they're creating this madness, in this case, for Lilo and Stitch.

I had heard Sydney was half white and half Phillipino. So I wasn’t super happy with the casting either. Skin color shouldn’t really matter (I disagreed with the criticisms levied at Moon Knight for that exact reason). But if she really is Hawaiian or of Polyponesian descent, then it shouldn’t really mean she can’t play Nani. And it’s unfortunate that ppl are spreading that rumor around to discredit her. You don’t really see ppl angry about Indians or Pakistanis representing each other in movies interchangeably, it’s kinda funny how this issue only props up for certain cultures. It’s also funny cuz Marvel replaced a PoC character w/ a white woman and I never saw anyone get super miffed about that either (or maybe I missed it cus I avoid twitter).

Hawaiians come in many shades, especially if they’re mixed. I’m kanaka (not mixed, so rare) and have lighter skin than others so it would never occur to me to represent a very dark character. This doesn’t mean I’m not hawaiian, and I don’t feel less than just because I don’t look like other dark skin hawaiians. I personally think that if they couldn’t find a dark skin hawaiian to play the part, they should have cast a dark skin polynesian. There are still a lot of dark skin polynesian and the girl they chose for Nani isn’t polynesian. Also, haole does not mean white. It means foreigner or not hawaiian. And you look mixed to me so I’m not sure why people don’t think you are 🤔 Disney sucks, they only do this so we can give them free attention and exposure for their lack of good storytelling. If we all ignored them then it would stop, but it looks like that will never happen. Edit: Oh, and many hawaiians had a problem with the actor of Dougie Kamealoha not being ethnically hawaiian or even from Hawaii. Not all hawaiians voice their displeasure online. They’ve just gotten used to filmmakers taking liberties when choosing kanaka representation.

Finally someone said what I was thinking, I’m not Hawaiian but I was thinking the same thing. People dismiss representation of others and how they feel. Honestly, being told I look mexican/Asian is something I have an issue with too. My main piss angry moment was when someone said that she wasn’t Hawaiian, she was “half Filipino”, and I had to mention this when you mentioned your ancestry. Honestly, I think the Lilo and stitch movie is going to be horrible not because of the casting choices, but because I think Disney keeps on doing this “correcting” thing with their remakes given that they don’t know what mad said movies good in the first place. One thing I’ve been complaining about is that they gave another social worker in there, and so far I see no sign of Captain Gantu being a thing. So I’m worried they’re going to make the second social worker, now played by Nani’s original voice actress, the main antagonist to avoid all the extra work it would take to animate our favorite big stupid-head alien bad cop.

I am not Hawaiian, I am a white woman, but I LOVE Lilo and Stitch. It helped me grow in confidence with the talking Stitch toy that came out upon the movie's release and has been my favorite movie ever. Stitch is my favorite Disney character. I saw a video comparing this to the live-action Little Mermaid and I was baffled. My first thought was, A, This is NOT a race-swap. They are still Hawaiian and they don't have to look like the original character. While many of the live-action remakes have tried to make the characters look like their animated counterparts, with this issue, I felt this, if they can hire native Hawaiians then I would be fine with that. The Hawaiian language has been known to be spoken in the movie and while I can't tell how accurate it is, from seeing how you love this movie, I'm guessing most Hawaiians feel the same. B, NOT ALL HAWAIIANS LOOK THE SAME!!! It's like saying all Latinos look the same or all Asians look the same, no no, and NO. That is wrong to assume. I have never been to Hawaii myself, and I dream of going, but even I'm not dumb enough to know that not all Hawaiians look the same. While I don't believe the remake will be good, I will defend the casting of Sydney. Representation is not bad, I want to see it. (I would love to see an African Folk Lore/Myth or Latino Folk Lore/Myth be told.) What I don't want, is a lazy retelling of a story that will be forgotten by the masses in the next few years

The main issue is this: Whenever a dark skinned character(regardless of race or ethnicity) is portrayed in live-action 90% of the time they are made lighter. It almost NEVER goes the other way. This is not coincidental. This is due to colorism. The global investment in placing lighter/fair skin above dark skinned individuals. Research it. If you cannot understand why that in itself is the issue here, it may be due to your skin tone being lighter and therefore you cannot understand why this would be an issue. It has nothing to do with her “Hawaiian-ness” being called into question. It’s about the fact that Lani is a darker skin with a curvy body type. And the actress they selected to play her does not look like that.

Skin color isn't arbitrary when you're trying to portray an existing character. You can't just hire a white guy to play an African American in a story about an African American family. That's just weird. Ethnicity doesn't matter too much but they should have cast someone who looked like the character they were portraying. Chadwick Boseman isn't African but he looks the part so it still works. They could have cast an Asian Pacific islander who looked the part instead of putting a white passing actress in a dark skinned character's role.

I think you’re misunderstanding the argument here. Most people are saying it’s a colorism thing. It’s because there is very little representation that brown people get. Most of the movies and shows are showing white people and colorism is a world wide problem. For a lot of people, seeing lilo and Nani was great because they’re visibly brown with ethnic features and realistic bodies. Not here to argue, just want to point that out. It’s about there being countless representation for lighter skinned people and not enough for others and a lot of darker skinned people don’t get as many chances in the spotlight.

Ever since these Live-Action remakes came out, I started seeing rumors about Lilo and Stitch getting a Live-Action Remake, at the time I was like "If they gonna remake the first movie, it better be Pixar style..." But now, with modern Disney and Pixar movies having all the weird messaging and propaganda put into them I was then like "Please don't bring Lilo and Stitch back..." But seeing how not only their making a Live-Action Remake, and that Disney is Cappin' with the quality of their Moviesm imma' tell you somethin', If they mess up Stitches design, and/or the vibes and themes of the original Movie are just gone and is just becomes mediocre, I will lose the %1 amount of trust I had in Disney completely and somebody needs to BOYCOTT the company ASAP, I waited YEARS for some type of sequel, and if THIS IS WHAT WE GET, AND IT'S BAD...oh boy...gonna start a RIOT!!!

Ya this whole backlash about the casting because of their skin colors really is terrible. As a huge fan of this franchise, I'm honestly nervous about this live-action remake, because this thing shouldn't even exist (along with the other remakes as their originals are better). You know, instead of a live-action remake, it would be better to have new animated content from the franchise, like seeing the classic experiments again while giving them further characterization, introduce more experiments that we haven't seen yet, seeing how Stitch, Lilo and the gang have grown in the years past Leroy & Stitch, see more of the Galactic Federation, or maybe even having new experiments created by other alien evil scientists. There's still so much they can do with what's already there, but they want to do ANOTHER POINTLESS LIVE-ACTION REMAKE! Who else agrees with me?
@ToaKoran

The skin color situation is one that makes sense *to an extent*. I saw Nani's actress in the image they had shown and immediately my reaction was "That doesn't look like the character", and that's a fair response by itself. If you're adapting something then it's within your best interest to make the characters recognizable from their most popular rendition, Lilo and Stitch only having one that was iconic from the moment it came out. Lilo looks perfect and precious, but Nani and David just don't have that right look. Now if that was all, that would be fair, but it's the insane lunatics on places like Twitter that are so unhinged and disconnected from their humanity and morality for the sake of being "right" and being in control that the next logical step for something not going how they want is violence and threats. THAT is unacceptable no matter who or what you are or believe, and it is ALWAYS crossing a line to do that.

It was really interesting to hear your perspective on all of this especially since you have a much more personal connection to it all from a cultural and ethnical pov. There was a lot of overlap for myself since colorism always seem to be a big topic of discussion in the black community. My siblings and I all range from different tones some of us inheriting stronger traits from our grandparents, so I really like how you explained your family history and background and how darker skinned ethnic groups tend to vary in skin complexion due to the range of people found within a family tree. I do disagree with you a bit on the point you made in regards to Halle Bailey being recasted to play Ariel in the new little mermaid. Though I’m sure there are people complaining about the lilo and stitch colorism but don’t have a problem with a black actress being recasted as a character who was originally white (and to your point they are hypocrites) the points made against casting Ariel as black are a bit disingenuous. For one the red hair given to both versions of Ariel in the animated film and the live action remake isn’t a (for the most part I’m sure there are anomalies out there) a natural hair color. When we use the term “redhead” in the world it refers to someone who is a ginger and that color is more similar to the color orange than the red shown in both versions of the character, and its also the same color as both Mufasa and Simba’s manes in the lion king. Attributing this color of red to one race or ethnicity wouldn’t be entirely accurate since to get that color presented in the original would require dyeing it. Two, Ariel is the one character where a race change does not impact the plot since mermaids are fantasy creatures who are not confined to one race in particular and Disney themselves reimagined and straight up replaced most of the Danish culture of the original book it was based off in the first place. Also not to mention the same people who have a problem with a black little mermaid didn’t seem to have a problem with Tiana being black considering the fact that the princess and the frog is based off of a fairy tale written by two German brothers. All in all discourse around these things can get out of control and there is no way to satisfy everyone but I think we can all agree, we don’t need anymore live action remakes.
@DaenerysGOT18
@DaenerysGOT18 Жыл бұрын
No one had a problem with The Princess and the Frog because Tiana was a new character. Yes the story is based of a German fairytale but it doesn’t take place in Germany and Tiana wasn’t the original princess in the book. She wasn’t originally a white girl who they recast. That’s what people have a problem with Ariel. The original Disney Ariel is a white redhead. Changing her race isn’t okay because that isn’t the same original character. Just like people are getting made about Nani being to light because she doesn’t match the look of the original charter is the same thing people have a problem with the new Little Mermaid. It seems it’s totally okay to change a white character to another race because “white peoples have no culture, and it isn’t integral to who they are” but if it’s done the other way around it’s racist. I just wish people could see that if you have a problem with one then you should have a problem with both. It’s just super hypocritical for people to find it okay only when it’s a white character being race swapped.
@drereviews8868
@drereviews8868 Жыл бұрын
@@DaenerysGOT18 my point is that this live action remake is a reimagining of the story the same way the princess and the frog was also a reimagining but instead of going straight from book to movie it went from book to movie to movie. The whole “white people have no culture” is a loud small minority you’re choosing to highlight and honestly I’m not sure why you brought it up here when I explicitly mentioned how a majority of the danish culture(Northern European) present in the book is erased in the 1989 animated film and replaced with various other cultural aspects including Ariel having a Hebrew name, triton being native to Greek mythology, and a crab with a Jamaican accent. Changing the race of someone like Snow White would make no sense considering the fact her name literally describes a physical characteristic she has and you won’t see too many people defending the recast of Snow White as black or any non white woman. Or trying to recast Mulan as anyone other than Asian since it’s based off of a traditional legendary figure in Chinese history. There is context and a majority of people who are being sensible will acknowledge that context without making everything a 1:1 so “if you have a problem with one you should have a problem with the other,” is very disingenuous and lacks any nuance to the entire topic. Also to your point about the princess and the frog not taking place in Germany, once again the 1989 little mermaid takes place in a fictional city called Atlantica and according to the Disney wiki (could be wrong) is heavily implied to be based off the Greek legend of Atlantis and located beneath the Mediterranean Sea as opposed to the North Sea (closest sea to Denmark). I agree that Disney and most of these companies race swapping are just being lazy to make up for the lack of representation throughout the years and I’d much rather like to see original stories. Last point, white characters getting swapped definitely happens don’t get me wrong, but for such a long time being white in any tv series or film was just the default for most characters and if they weren’t white, they for the most part were relegated to smaller roles. It has changed quite a bit in the last decade or so but still a majority of characters are white regardless of where you turn to in any form of media(at least in the states.) In a 2017 reimagining of the Archie comics called riverdale, 3 of the four leads were recast as white adjacent with their comic book counterparts, but one was recasted as a Hispanic woman being Veronica and no one cared because a majority of the main cast of characters are and were still white. When the majority is also the default I’m going to find a bit difficult to say trying to level the play field is wrong.

I think most of the hate is just coming from people being overall upset/frustrated/tired of all these remakes. Especially since many of the original cartoons still hold up and are just fine.

I admit I have no intent of seeing this because it's a live action remake and I proudly haven't watched those since basically 102 Dalmations.

As someone who once was so debilitatingly colorblind I thought my mother was white (she’s black) because she wasn’t nearly as dark as my dad, I couldn’t tell you just how dark nani and lilo are supposed to be. Back when I first watched it the only person I considered non-white in the movie was bubbles because back then to me what people called race was a simple as skin color and there was only black or white. Just because I know better now, however doesn’t mean Im still heavy influenced by my first impressions of race. The way I see it now I still couldn’t tell you that nani is supposed to look as if she’s a darker or lighter shade of olive because all of the movie’s pallet tones look a little muted to me. The brightest skin color seen is the ice cream guy, and to me he’s so bright he looks out of place in the movie. (For that guy specifically I know that’s part of the point, but the other white tourists I don’t remember being nearly as bright. I guess they had tans? This is such a dumb social construct guys) I guess what Im saying My opinion is not at all the most reliable, but at the least I don’t think we can really definitively say that what nani’s skin color is ‘supposed to be’ is 1:1 with the exact color in the animation. And after that, what matters most is that she A:looks related to lilo and B, she’s hawaiian. If most people cant tell she’s hawaiin(and a vocal minority explicitly think she isn’t) than this is an educational moment, not a mob rule moment. Also death threats are never ok.

I can only speak from my experience as a latin guy, maybe the anger towards Nani being cast as a light skin brown person stems from the perceived privilege light skinned people historically had even within brown communities. I know for a fact that in latin America privilege and favoritism towards light skinned mestizos stems back all the way to the time of the spaniard conquest, there was a whole thing called Pintura de Castas which portrayed how interracial marriages resulted in various mixtures based on skin color, and it served as a way of hoping to whiten as much as possible the recently conquered mexicas. Families would strategically marry and bear children in the hope of being whiter and whiter with each passing generation. Even among siblings, if one was just a little more fair skinned than the other, there would be a perceived favoritism. Here in mexico we still us the term "Güero" which can be roughly translated to "blondie" as a way to compliment another person, specially if you're offering some kind of payed service (though the term is gradually falling out thank god), it doesn't matter if both persons in the conversation are brown, the slightest perceived difference in skin tone instantly brought a sense of superiority, as portrayed in the Pinturas de Castas. If you watch mexican television you'll see that the vast majority of actors and celebrities are latin, but fair skinned. Tenoch Huerta (Namor in Black Panther 2) has spoken at length about how he being dark skinned has strongly limited his working opportunities in Mexico, due to this colorism within the latin american context. Another example is Yalitza Aparicio who after working in the movie ROMA and attending the Oscars received a backlash of hate and racism by her own country. I understand your point that being Hawaiian today involves such complex and varied factors that have resulted in hawaiians of varios skin tones and ethnic backgrounds, just as there are so many ethnic nuances within the latin context. But we should not forget the fact that fair skin has been imposed as a desire within brown communities, leading to self loathing and internalized racism within this very communities, poisoning and even breaking any possibility for us to unite and have a sense of identity. Maybe asking for dark skinned actors to represent our communities is a way to heal some of this trauma.

Honestly, I was done as soon as they announced a live-action Lilo and Stitch--leave my childhood alone, disney. My family and I went to Kauai in the mid-2000s because after watching Lilo and Stitch, I wanted to go. I cannot for the life of me tell you the skin tone of anyone there because prior to...what, 2016? 2008? It's hard to tell when the attitude of "skin color first" started permeating modern society but back then it was just "they're American, I'm American, all our states are awesome." Honestly what baffled my family was the abundance of Asian restaurants, so hearing that there's a lot of that ancestry makes sense, just like California having a lot of Asian ancestry and the East Coast having a lot of European ancestry--those are the closest countries when you cross the oceans. I just miss good films, and I miss a month ago when people saying "live-action Lilo and Stitch" was met with "Don't say that--don't give them ideas." EDIT: Also isn't Keanu Reeves Hawaiian? No one's out there saying he should be darker. Honestly, "there should be a live-action Lilo and Stitch movie" is the worst Lilo and Stitch take I've heard since that one Tumblr user said Lilo, the six-year-old, was too immature.

Glad to see this being discussed by an actual Hawaiian, who really are the only people that should have any say of consequence in this particular issue; however, it should be made clear, "colorism" has nothing to do with where you were born, or what culture you are, it's all about how you look and are treated by the greater society, and Hollywood has practiced colorrism for a very long time when it comes to non-white casting.

Thank you. I'm also Hawaiian and the controversy over Nani is ridiculous. My mother is Hawaiian and also named Nani. My entire life, especially when I was a kid, we had to deal with ignorant people either thinking I was adopted or worse simply because my mother was very light skinned because she was anemic More often than not she would be listed as caucasian. Every summer I'd get much darker. At its worst we were detained at the Mexican border because they didn't believe she was my mother. When I first saw who was going to play Nani I was thrilled. We all hope to see ourselves in characters that portray our nationality. Then the controversy started. I've defended the actress choice and will continue to

Thank you for this video. I am not Hawaiian, but I am biracial with a white mom and a biracial black/white dad. Sometimes I start to think about my race and I struggle to categorize myself. My parents divorced when I was young and although I still see my dad, I was mostly raised by my white mom. If you looked at me, I just look white. You wouldn't know I was biracial unless I told you. So I often struggle with the question of whether I'm considered a person of color. I don't really identify with the black community, I just feel white. I feel disconnected from the non-white side of me. It caught my attention when you mentioned that you had darker skin when you were younger, I was the same. I played outside a lot so I was tan. Now since I don't go outside much my skin is much lighter. This video helped me think about some things about my race, so thank you.

What’s funny is that even though I’m not Hawaiian, I have a Hawaiian name (Kiana means “divine” or “calming waters”, whichever meaning you prefer). In any case, though, I still love this movie to this day and would much rather not watch the live action for fear of what they’ll do to Stitch and the aliens (I shudder to think of it). I still hate it for what they did to Cobra Bubbles, though. Also, about the “light skin” thing with Nani and David, even when I went to Hawaii for a choir trip (it was in Honolulu), not everyone was dark skinned.

Well idk who’s complaining but I do know that Hollywood plays the colorism game. Also a lot of y’all been mixed with white so I image a real native with no mixture is actually darker skinned so if darker skinned native are upset about the actress it’s understandable for the sake of representation.

I understand your comments, and the sentiments of most people in these comments. There are even Latinas like myself agreeing with you. But I will have to say I disagree in that for as long as I can remember, white skin is the only kind of beauty that Hollywood and western media promote. Not even Disney animations will give a black character an entire movie without turning them into something not human. As for Latin culture, they don’t like to admit it, but they (and again im Latina) are very racist. They worship white skin, because as you mentioned we were colonized by Europeans. Colonized to the point where white Latins look down on Indigenous/Afro Latins. Our media is sadly almost exactly the same as western media, with main characters always being white skinned and the servants and maids always being dark skinned. Latin people have been brainwashed into being ashamed of our indigenous roots. I’ve seen a KZbin interview with a white Mexican who moved to Korea showing them images of the most beautiful models in Mexico. And of course all of them are white. The one brown, indigenous looking woman that she shows she said “Wasn’t pretty, but was more traditional looking.” U.S. Latin people are the same in that we are usually darker as children, but of course we pick up on that lighter skinned people get treated better so we start consciously staying out of the sun. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the Little Mermaid remake with this, as you said, the little mermaid in its entirety is not real. Yet, Lilo and Stitch portrayed a dynamic that so many dark skinned people go through. The u.s government is responsible for tearing many brown skinned families apart. For most of media history, it was illegal for brown/black people to even be on screen. I can’t even watch anime without the characters talking shit about people with dark skin. It’s like the whole world will defend light skinned people, but will always find a way to demean representation of dark skinned people. Katniss from the Hunger Games and her district were supposed to be dark skinned, but got changed to white. Avatar the last air bender white washed, so many movies white wash. Hollywood even wore black face, yellow face, anything to prevent dark skinned people from actually appearing in media. But we really actually have a problem with a black woman portraying a fake mermaid in a fake story, because screw little brown/black girls everywhere?

What I care about whether they're going to keep it a beautiful heartfelt story about the two sisters dealing with the struggles of their new family dimamic and responsibilities after great tragedy and their struggles to be able to continue to live together and not get separated while at the same time working on the trials of the little alien they adopted so Lilo would have a friend to help her cope. Will it have the same basic heartfelt message?
