The link between food production and fossil fuels (w/ Quick Dick McDick)

Saskatchewan farmer Quick Dick McDick has decided to throw himself into a number of hot-button issues. Food production and its reliance on fossil fuels is a common theme. From his perspective: “You can’t have one without the other.” It’s a point he believed was being drowned out by people in urban settings, who as he put it, “have no idea what it takes to produce food in Canada.”
Rather than moan and whine, Quick Dick decided to employ cutting humor and a raw on-camera presence to make his point. Namely, he feels that decisions about how to produce food and the increasing cost of energy are out of touch with the reality of farming. His concern is: “I worry that we’re needlessly driving up the cost of food production while the commodity price on crops has not gone up, making it even more difficult than it already is to be a farmer.”
His style is a no-holds-barred poke-ya-in-the-eye one that has gained him a huge online audience. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney shared QDM’s “Protestor Diet” video and, in doing so, ignited interest in Quick Dick’s KZbin channel. Now he is an internet sensation and before C-19, he was in hot demand as a speaker.
We caught up with QDM on his farm in Saskatchewan as he was seeding one of his fields. We invited him to join us for a Conversation That Matters about him, his message and why he is not going to stop sharing his down-to-earth messages.

My dad was raised on a farm. He made us kids understand farming even though we weren’t raised on one. We had to go to the Royal Agricultural winter fair every year , the plowing matches and grow our own vegetables. Many people are so out of touch with what it takes to farm. We got to go visit his family farms every summer and we got to work on them. Electric tractor : what a joke. Like you say, there’s small windows for planting and harvesting and there’s no mucking around.

My wife and I both love him. I come from a mom who grew up on a farm from the late 20's to early 40's. Pictures from those days show a very tough life so I have an extra appreciation for farmers who keep us all alive. Also worked in oil and gas and seen the cleanup efforts and support the companies contribute to the communities. Anyone vilifying the fuel industry should go live without it. Just a week or so. No products with anything to do with fossil. Your mind will change pretty quickly standing naked in a field trying to figure out which plants and bugs will taste best.

As he says we farmers from everywhere need to keep reminding urban people that farming and ranching is "poverty with a view" just because they mite have a million dollars plus tied up in equipment just seems they have a bigger bank loan. Any 2 to 3 year had weather condition will destroy them. So who should be more concerned with historical weather and future weather conditions????

Quick Dick is a man who lives and works in a rural environment, near a small community on his farm. He is an honest to goodness educated, highly intelligent, well rounded in numerous levels of the oil and gas industry as well as experienced with the rigors of agriculture, (grain & cattle farming) creates cool informative videos on a regular basis mostly while he is busy working on any number of tasks on and around the farm. (Some include strong language with a unique attitude and point of view) he is also very smart, real practical in his approach to sharing his knowledge and hilariously funny. He is sincere, humble and honest which is typical of folks who work the land on farms. He provides a huge menu of topics in his repertoire so dig in and fill your boots and enjoy the buffet. As much as he serves generously, you'll fill up but hunger and thirst for more. He is outstanding in his field. Hey QuickDick! Get out of the oat field, you're going against the grain. I couldn't resist. Thank you for your contribution to the world. Keep up the great performance kind sir!

I enjoy his video's funny and well presented, I like how he gives a good honest perspective from a segment of our society most urban people rarely get to see. Most people who live in a city only really experience the end of the food supply chain seldom do they understand the logistics and work it takes to raise/grow food, transport, then get it prepared for grocery stores and finally put on the shelf to be bought and consumed. It is as important industry as oil and gas, manufacturing or any other resource industry. Yet they time and time again get painted as ignorant bigots when they chime in with concerns about social issues in our society Mad respects it is hard work and vital.

I enjoy watching QD..It brings back a lot of memories back when I was mixed farming. I agree with much of what he is saying and we all have different opinions. Human survival is water, food, heat and then shelter. The primary and he is providing one of the most important cogs in the wheel. Where we differ though is things need to swing over in technology. I am leaning more towards organic farming. We had probably the first air seeder in our part of the world. The crops looked terrible coming up at first because the depth of seed was all over the place. It did save on fuel and number of passes over the land. We would do one pass where other farmers were going over the land another 2 or three. But to take that a step or two up. Yes I dont see a future in electric in the farm tractor. As pointed out I dont see any plug ins however 40 years ago when and if we could see a little further down the tunnel we should have been working on hydrogen fuelled equipment. Anyhow I will cut this off here. QD is vocalizing what the majority of farmers feel and he ain't wrong . I Enjoy the videos...Please keep them up. Rural life and where and how the food comes from should be out there. Doing it in a hands on and comedic way brings it on as a forum people love to watch. Me included.

Have to agree with much of his premises. I think it might be smart to grow his own machinery fuel. I do know of where at least one group of farmers in a co-op dedicate part of their fields to plants for their oils, which they sell to local restaurants. The hard matter from the expelling process of separating oils from fibrous matter is used for livestock feed, too, adding to its value. This same oil is then bought back, filtered, then used in farm equipment. If perennial plants are grown for their oil, instead of annual crops, less time, effort and money is spent in replanting, and less topsoil is blown away from tillage, as a side benefit. Water permeates better in ground that isn't tilled. This saves on the costs associated with irrigation. This being done as part of a co-op has the added benefit of stabilizing the relationship between supply and demand, while freeing up valuable time because of the increased efficiencies is gathering, refining, time saved, etc. The crop of oil plants has increased utility. It is now fuel, feed, and restaurant product. This keeps operations costs down, profits up, and creates farm resiliency. Using home grown oil in equipment still requires diesel, but it greatly reduces its need... Agree about electric equipment. It is very impractical.

@@robertcoutts926 Tell me more about this article or book. I am not finding it online. Who wrote it? Does it discuss using the expelled pulp for feed? Does it discuss that these oils are waste products *from the food industry?* Does it discuss using perennials for oils? Does it discuss using crops able to produce more than one "product" per plant? Pretty sure this isn't going to starve someone, but give more information, I am willing to be challenged. Have you Read Mark Shepard's Restoration Agriculture?

@@b_uppy the only way to replace diesel and gas in the farm sector is through biodiesel and ethanol which has two inherent problems, they don't pack the same punch as what they replace and ANY crop used to make it, takes food away from either an animal (that we will consume) or from a human ... only experimental facilities have been built and that was a decade ago (haven't heard anything since) so right now this is pie in the sky.

You are not very practical yourself but I commend you for your thought and ideas. First, socialist farming practices have a spectacular record of failure, so co-ops may not be a solution. Most farmers as independent operators have a relationship with the land or animals and a personal interest and responsibility to their farms and identify what works and what does not work that the collectives can't seem to duplicate. Institutions like the old Canadian Wheat Board did equalize markets for farmers, but it equalized down instead of up. Thankfully that is gone. Agriculture in Canada has undergone a tremendous increase in productivity. Pesticides and fertilizers have replaced much of the need for tillage. New varieties and GMOs help solve disease and weed issues. A 640 acre mixed farm was once the model of efficiency, but not any more. New technology as enabled economies of scale and efficiency to reach far greater levels. If you were a farmer you need to cost out your ideas to develop business models for your ideas, and since most farmers rely on credit to some extent those business plans need to be acceptable to a creditor. You might run into trouble on that problem.
