So is this risk, or association? In my epidemiology textbook in chapter one it says observational studies cannot inform on causality. It also says that "risk" is a term implying causality. So.......? Would you please cite the research that indicates causality between any of these factors and insulin resistance?

As a type 2 diabetic, I have tried vegan, carnivore and keto. Carnivore really makes me feel like my cardiovascular health is taking a big hit. Vegan I felt was too extreme and I lost energy and felt tired. I think what I like best for me as a just turned 55 year old diabetic, is only lean meats and seafood, and not huge amounts. Also plenty of veggies. Breakfast can be difficult because even multigrain cereal has carbs, but they also have fiber and I use organic soy milk for that. Best of luck to you with your journey !

I became vegan not too long ago, started learning about how saturated animal products inhibit insulin reaction. Yes eating protein works in the short term but in the long term all you're doing is bogging down the system and setting yourself up for a cardiac event.

I would love to know the truth about this. Been searching for over 10 years. But I will say that with those that go on low carb diets most of the time their markers improve dramatically. Many have reversed their Type 2 diabetes. I will have to say this is very hard to believe what is being said here. I was on low carb 5 years, had cholesterol numbers so low my doc said he wasn't going to check them again for a couple years, plus a perfect colonoscopy, and 50 pounds off to boot. But information like this has muddied the waters. Somebody is lying, but for a layperson it is difficult to know who.

Meat kills beta cells. Keto isn't sustainable for most people; the moment they go back to eating arbs, they'll be worse off than when they started because of the lost beta cells. High carb, whole foods doesn't kill beta cells, so why not just go high carb?

I've been learning that whole carbs and fruit are not the enemy, it's kind of a shame that that's how us fellow diabetics are taught at the moment of diagnosis. @@kayallen7603 Since this is 2 years old, doubt if this will be read but Richards is not wrong. As pointed out, the difference is short term (whatever that maybe into the 70's) vs long term (into the 90's). My situation is somewhat unique. Both sides of my large families in the 30's became SDA's with well over 100 life long vegans. My father at age 88, picked apples for fun in the fall. He worked 8-10 hour days, 6 days a week and picked 8 bins, 200 boxes on average. The average life span in the vegan families were about 93, with no cancer, diabetes, HBP, and so on although age related problems did catch up to them well into their 90's. The Loma Linda Blue Zone with about 10,000 SDA's in the 100,000 community have been studied for almost 50 years. There life span is about 10 years longer that their counterparts and have far less age related diseases. These are unavoidable facts. Other strong factors for longevity is a life long intake of low calories. Apparently, what a person eats in this situation is not as important. Then, of course, their is exercise, genetics, culture, and so on. Each to his own.....

Hi Nelle, I can't comment because I don't know what study you are referring to. When did she present this data? From my thorough review of the literature, the totality of the evidence (from mechanistic studies to experimental clinical ward studies to large epidemiological studies) shows that the higher the intake of meat and saturated fat, the higher the risk of type 2 diabetes. There are many explanations for this, some of which I discuss in this video. You may like to read this post instagram.com/p/CARYE3YjQaX/ There have also been numerous and recent major studies that show that people with the highest intake of animal products have the highest risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality (death). I'm not saying you have to eliminate meat completely from your diet but people on keto diets consuming a large amount of animal products need to be informed. We need to be looking long term not short term. I'm happy to share some of these studies with you if you would like. I'm sorry, I know it can be confusing when you read conflicting information. I would suggest watching some of my other videos that help to explain how fat and saturated fat play a role in insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. :)

Juliet Richards The problem isn’t meat or fat consumption. It’s eating fat along with carbohydrates, especially grains. I can tell you that my husband and I, on a diet that excluded all grains and included meat, and some non-starchy vegetables, lost weight and improved all our blood tests- blood glucose, liver function, cholesterol, trigyclerides. (For 12 years now) After all, I think it was Nina Teicholz who said diabetes is primarily a disease of carbohydrate intolerance. I think the science is very clear that it’s not fat that is the problem in our diets but sugar and grains.

@@emb74 I totally agree that the combination of fat and carbohydrate (especially processed and refined) is dynamite. That's fantastic that you have been able to get all your blood markers down. Have they remained down over the 12 years or have they increased over that time? Many people following a keto diet find that over time their fasting blood glucose levels start to rise due to worsening insulin resistance in the liver and many people have issues keeping their LDL cholesterol down. We have to also be careful vilifying one thing because what is just as important, if not more important is what you are replacing it with. Processed and refined carbohydrates are just as harmful. You are right that type 2 diabetes is a carbohydrate intolerance but there are many causes of the carbohydrate intolerance. The science is very clear that it's not one or the other, both refined carbohydrates and saturated fat play a role.

It's combination of fat and high carbs. Randell study. High carbs which is sugar no matter the source plants etc. You don't need carbs. Your body will produce glucose. Loading it up with carbs causes insulin resistant storage of fat. Saturated fats is for brain and hormones. Many Vegans have lost their periods for women and low testosterone for men. We need protein from animals. You can't get the amount you need from plants. We need protein for everything to prevent sarcopenia. Protein is needed for everything in your body hair, bones, collagen etc. 2 sources of energy fat and carbs. You are better, calmer, stable without insulin spikes using fat as energy. Plus all plants are man-made. Please research our ancestors we ate primarily animals not plants. Most plants are toxic unless cooked properly. Fiber is causing so much digestive issues. It's clogging your bowels. People with IBS, colitis, crones etc are put on no fiber diets. Why do you think that is? We are not cows that can digest all these plant fibers. You eat meat and animal fat you go fine. No constipation, no longer gas non stop etc. If veganism is the best why are we getting sicker and fatter. You have it wrong. I know I bought into the vegan for over 20 years now I'm a Carnivore. Muscle mass returned, no more bloating, gas, feeling hungry anymore.

As I've said, you will find doctors/experts on both sides. Check out Mastering Diabetes, Dr Michael Greger, Dr Neal Barnard, Dr Garth Davis just to name a few. If you manage to lose a tonne of weight following a low carb/keto diet it's arguable that the fat loss is more beneficial than consuming saturated fat in the short term because with the fat loss your markers improve and inflammation is also likely to go down however the concerns would be for the long term. There is substantial, and very recent evidence supporting recommendations to replace saturated fat with unsaturated fat and this is particularly important in people with cardiovascular disease or at risk (people with type 2 diabetes). It's important to listen to both sides and be open-minded because human nutrition is complicated and our understanding continues to evolve. I am very open-minded but from all my research I would feel very uncomfortable recommending people with type 2 diabetes consume a lot of saturated fat and animal products.

Juliet Richards well thanks for all that Juliet, I certainly have fallen in behind the drs that I mention and I do look at different videos on the subject everyday. It was strange as when I was in Cambodia from December2019 -March 2020 on high fat / low carb & IF I lost 8 kgs 76-68 when I got back to Melbourne I was eating more but the same ratio of fat/carbs. I went from 68-77kgs. Which surprised me somewhat. I’ve managed to stabilize at 77 kgs. by trying to eat my 2 meals a day a little smaller but I’m not losing any weight. Thanks for the names of the other drs. I’ll certainly check them out. My carbs consist of 1 or 2 cups of homemade soup with the low GI veggies and usually a couple of mushrooms most days , I haven’t had a piece of fruit since March and I eat only 2 meals between 10am and 4:30 pm everyday. My weakness is 4-5 cups of coffee with only a very small amount of cream.

@@garyroberts3859 You're welcome. Weight loss is definitely tough and complicated. Juliet Richards hi Juliet, I’ve looked at videos from the 3 drs you nominated and yes they have a completely different view on what we should be eating. So my 4 earnest drs and your 3 earnest drs come to opposite conclusions ...do I assume by looking at the same studies??? One group is wrong that is pretty clear... so how does the average punter know which group to back??? It’s a crazy situation your group is suggesting that meat, eggs & diary are practically poisons and you’re risking your life eating like that And my group is saying high fat and saturated fats are fine...you can eat carbs but only low GI carbs and not too many. So it’s great to have an open mind but what is the right course for a diabetic who has got great A1C result on High fat/ low carb and very low daily blood sugar readings ...lots of 6’s & 5’s, low 7’s and occasionally an 8 and expecting my next A1C to also be in the 5’s???

I think ad a type 2 diabetic, I’ve tried virtually every diet including vegan, keto and carnivore. With carnivore I feel a big hit on my cardiovascular and with vegan I felt a lack of energy and my mental concentration was not optimal. After my trials with diets, I find that lots of veggies, lean meats like Turkey, chicken and seafood are the best proteins. High fiber breakfast cereals are good but with organic soy milk. Many Doctors on KZbin promote a high carnivore diet, but they are not diabetic themselves. It’s very hard on your organs and cardiovascular system when you’re eating saturated fats. Sure, eating carnivore will keep you blood sugars in check, but you’ll set yourself up for heart disease too.

THIS IS WRONG - eating lots of meats and lots of cholesterol will NOT increase risk of heart disease. The science does NOT support this. Search out Nina Tiecholz (The Big Fat Surprise), Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Phillip Ovadia, Dr. Shawn Baker and other doctors here on KZbin for more info. The idea that red meat and a diet high in fats causes or contributes to heart disease has been WiDELY disproven. There is zero correlation between high LDLs and increased risk of heart disease. To think this is to be stuck in 1970s medicine mentality - don't cling to this old lie
