When you think of the Linux user base you might just think of one of kind of person but in reality the kind of people making use of Linux is constantly in flux and the people here today are going to be completely different in a few years.

I definitely do not care what license the software I use has... I just, as Brodie said, want to use good software that lets me feel like I am in control of my computer.

Im curious, isn't being in control of the licensing of your software kind of a part of being in control? To me even if its not the main appeal, it is definitely something that feels nice

@@_mishii think what is being implied here is more control over what gets installed rather than the software itself. I also do not care about licensing and no one should care if they want things to be usable and practical imo. people who care are just like those people and distributions who want everything to be foss or libre.

I'm a Linux user because it works for me. I started with Unix in 1981 on a PDP at my college. It was my first time being able to use a computer. I loved it. I made beer and weed and coffee money using vi and troff to type and format other students papers. Not a computer science major, I learned shell scripting and BASIC on that system. I learned Informix SQL on a temp contract several years later. I've deployed ESX servers and Xen servers and worked with Oracle and built a remote support infrastructure on Linux VMs. My *nix skills helped me build a career, even without being my main focus in IT. I used Slackware 1.0 because I wanted to use the Internet and Windows 3.1 was absolute trash for Internet use at the time. I care about the ecosystem, I care about the open source community. But I use it because it feel at home there. It works for me and the last 12 years it's my daily driver. I only worry about the year of the Linux desktop in the context of Linux becoming mainstream and potentially having negative consequences for old timers who just want their flexibility and choices. Creeping corporate control, enshitification, erosion of the open source spirit of the project, etc.

Very true. I personally started using Linux because it's easier to do development work on it, but it eventually grew into this really interesting hobby of mine, I have my main PC set, but on my old computers I want to try out every distro, break them, find bugs, try filesystems, mess with the boot settings, learn how the bootloader works and just keep learning new interesting things, it's the bets hobby I've ever had!

I started dualbooting because I wanted to do more cool stuff on my laptop. I stayed and then also switched to Linux exclusively because it was nicer to use and also I just liked micro-managing my system way to much. But now I'm converted and fully believe that Free Software is just the superior way of doing software - it has certain undeniable advantages which proprietary stuff can never overcome (though there are other factors so it's always a trade-off).

Steam and proton has been EVERYTHING for me as far as switching to linux full time back in 2019. Been using linux off and on since 2005 including a 3 year period from 2010-2013 because I wasn't gaming at the time. But with gaming? I switched the moment most of my games started working.

I finally moved (dabbled a few times in the past) because Linux Mint just worked and did everything I needed. I don't mind learning along the way and maybe move to another distro eventually, but I needed a safe base to move from. The last straw was one day Windows 10 just locking up, on reboot it wanted to upgrade to Win11 and didn't give me an option not to. So I found the Mint option :) Steam often used to be a pain to install on linux a few years back, these days it's just one click.

Thank you very much for this awesome vid btw. I personally use Linux because of customization, I've done a lot of customization on Windows but I felt like it was not personal enough for me. The open source aspect of it was more of a side benefit that I have learned to appreciate while using it :D

There are privacy reasons for many of us as well. It's a sum total of many of the reasons you both listed in my case. I don't program or write code. I work in Investment and Retirement finance. In my free time I play guitar, study languages and play some computer games (less and less each day). I'm keeping hope for more development on audio production software. What we have is useable, but we're lacking some stuff. Too many musicians use Apple products 🤮

Im using it because MS tried to tell me my pc is magically unable to install windows...because reasons. I've been sitting back and watch MS continue to be a dumpster fire for the past 2 years.

I don't care if it's open source I care if it's good because in the end there's literally few good open source software but that doesn't mean all closed software is good too. I'll just go for what does the job best and when I started using ubuntu in 2008 I could have cared less about open source and I didn't even know what that was then.

I've switched to Linux because Windows was breaking over time, doing its own things. Linux allows managing all apects of system, feels as predictable as calculator. I've discovered coutless customizations, safety of distro packages. There were not much games on Linux but Linux on servers provided plenty of jobs, allowed switching full time.

Something to bear in mind is that you can start as one and end with the other. For my first decade on Linux (Dapper Drake ➡ Trusty Tahr), 60% of the software I used was proprietary software through WINE-heck, I only switched from Photoshop 7.0 to GIMP in 2022!-but over time, I really saw what the FOSS people were talking about in terms of having the source code not just _available_ but *modifiable* and completely under your control. Nowadays, I actively avoid nonfree (as in freedom) software, not just as a matter of principle, but because I've learned that to do otherwise is to invite enshittification.
