Of course he should but at the same time that’s not saying much. The Dark Ages in Europe was a period characterized by profound ignorance. That includes military strategy/tactics. There were a lot of brave men and there were a lot of stupid men.

@@doedelzak3914 whatever man. Europe went backwards after the fall of the Roman Empire, burned books, there was only one book that mattered: the Bible. No scientific or technological advancements for 1000 years until the Rennaisance. You can see the utter lack of sophistication reflected in their military tactics when they fight outsiders. The knights were awesome fighters individually because they trained that way, for tournaments and whatnot. They had zero ability to fight together, as a unit. Battle of Legnica, Battle of Mohi River, Battle of Nicopolis. They were clueless as to how to achieve success as a cohesive army. Or how about the First Crusade (the People's Crusade)? Nearly 100% eliminated by the Seljuk Turks.

He was a great warrior but arrogant. It cost him his liberty and bankrupted England all because he was ungracious to those who helped him win his battles. On his return he was kidnapped and held for ransom. Sounds a bit like today.

Ya I agree, no other leader came to help Saladin but he did receive reinforcements. Like the time his army retreated and he raced ahead the get food and supplies ready for them, shows the type of guy he was. Richard had funds granted. But to travel so far in the time that it was and to put up a solid fight was impressive. Both had respect for each other. So sad that the holy land is still being fought over.

Hey my brother I must say I truly enjoy your history research narrative and expository telling. The fact that you pronounce place names correctly as they were called in that time period shows the depth and accuracy of research you bring to your program and each individual episode. I especially appreciate your understanding of the relationship between Richard and Saladin. Given my understanding of human nature I would venture to say they both the respected and appreciated each other more than they did their backstabbing half-stepping countrymen and so-called allies. Yeah both of them were betrayed by their so-called allies, Richard by French allis and Saladin by his Emirs . I do believe both of those leaders were men of God following their God the god of their understanding to the best of their ability with honor and chivalry. By the "Capetian King", the Plantagenêt were technically French too (or Frankish to be exact), the concept of nationality did not exist back then. A huge part of Richard's army was from Duchies and Counties in France too. And Phillip II left 10 000 men under the orders of Guy III of Burgundy.

A really exciting narrative. I realise how strange our vision of nationalities for these characters is . "King of France" : "France" is only a region around Paris; this part speaks french....but the rest speaks provencals, flemish (Belgians or netherland ?) , Lorrain (oh ! maybe they are german !). Richard king of England...but his mother and his father were fren....oh no ! they spoke occitan. He had probably a high number of occiitans than Brittish in his army as he ruled over twice more "french" than "english". Guy de Lusignan speaks french, i believ but he is the former king of ...Jerusalem. The only thing that counts is the title, the higher they had and it is not representative of todays geogrphy. Ah never forget that all these guys are rivals .

....or England is a part of the Plantagenet possessions. They come from Anjou and Aquitaine and were dukes and counts there before reigning over England. Henri II is born in Fance (Le Mans) Alienor grew at Bordeaux and is buried at Fontevrault, Richard is born at Oxford, but he died in France and is buried at Fontevraut too. Did they speak english ? Just bribes. England, France has no sense at this period . I know history.

36:40 Richard did not kill the prisoners because Salahuddin refused any payment or pice of true cross. Those were other parts of negotiations. Richard killed them because he calculated the cost of feeding and watching the prisoners to be unbearable. He killed the prisoners of war for logistical issues. The Lion Heart.

Salahaldine fought against Europe, not just Richard, and won the war. The 3rd Crusader only won a few battles and gained very lettel land from the cost nothing to brag about. Salahaldine was sick and died 4 months after this war. The Crusaders went back empty-handed. The main objective was Jerusalem and Europe lost. Of course, the excuse will be Europe didn't have much troops wuch is a big joke, but this is just to make you sleep better at night. But the truth is that Salahaldine broke your army's and sent them back as losers all this while he was sick.😂

@@qutuzm7753 Saladan and Richard at least respected each other. Sadly this cannot be said for those in the youtube comment section. Attacking so far away from their power base in europe wasnt smart with supply lines so stretched and reinforcement slow to arrive. Richard almost lost his crown due to troubles back home with nothing to show for it. Even if they had managed to capture Jerusalem it would only be a matter of time before they lost it again. I guess god wasnt on their side. On the other hand Saladin got really lucky with the french pulling back most of their troops and the german crusaders never arriving because their king died on the way. If their army really was 200.000 man strong i wondered how things turned out had they arrived in the levant. So Saladin wasn't fighting the whole of Europe, more like a small expeditionary force made up of mostly English and smaller contingents of a few other countries. According to this video the crusaders numbered at the most 12000 in total? That is quite a small army actually.

They burned entire cities to the ground on their way to the levant when the cities refused to open their gates. Crusaders kill anyone, not just combatants and also after a surrender. Also when those knights arent busy killing innocents during their crusades they are murdering pagans to convert them to christianity. i dont understand what you mean to imply with second part of your message.

@@enthusiast0 I've stood where these battles took place. I've done my homework. There were many factors at play, many of which were explained. Still, my comment stands. The invaders had to cross the seas resupplying troops and supplies. Saladin had massive advantages in practically every category and still was incapable of expelling a malnourished and ill-supplied force.
