The Tokens were an American male doo-wop style vocal group. They are best known for their 1961 hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". They also had some other songs such as "Tonight I Fell In Love", "I Hear Trumpets Blow" & "Portrait Of My Love". Beginning in 1963, The Tokens also began serving as record producers for other artists, such as the Chiffons, Randy & the Rainbows & the Happenings.

I love this song, Stan!💖 I remember the 1961 version that the Tokens made into a #1 hit but this song is much older & originated in Africa. I even remember exactly where I was when I first heard it!😲 🤗&😘from SE Tennessee!😊

The original soprano was Anita Darian. The soprano is not a member of the Tokens and is usually not credited although she is so critical to the song.

This is one of the MANY great songs of this era! For a little history, it has been copied over the years beginning in 1939. It is greatly modified with time. In my humble opinion, it is an honor and testimony to the original song that it has been adapted to our modern time! The Tokens have taken this song to the heavens! Thanks for the reaction ~

Do a review on their song "Tonight I fell in love". Excellent vocals and harmonizing. The girl singing the amazing high note is a background singer from the PBS Doo wop shows featuring the actual singers. Tokens still sound great. Look up the African Zulu song of which it orinated from.
