I'm confused. I thought it was well known that the story behind this is that the narrator had plans with his friends to meet at this house after the war, however he was the only one who survived, and despite his friends having died, they still went but in spirit. They are the phantoms, they're there waiting for him. "Tell them I came, but no one answered, that I kept my word". I was always told this, but I guess I was told wrong?

The traveller is knocking on the door of an empty house. It's his imagination that there are phantoms in the house because there is no expected reply. We are all spooked by silence when we expect to meet people. Silence, itself, invokes fear and imaginings.

As always iam gathering main theme of poem and poet biography briefly here it’s listeners poem is some of important themes in de la Mara listeners include alienation or isolation , and mystery of life . Alienation : in the poem , traveller visits lone house all by himself or riding in his horse .walter de la mare ( 1873- 1956) he wad English poet , short story writer, novelist. He is probably best remembered for his work for children, for this poem “ listeners “, for highly acclaimed of subtle psychological horror stories amongst them. “ seaten aunt” and “ All Hallow” . His notable awards James tait black , memorial prize 1921. Carnegie medal 1947.
