I have many mixed feelings about this story. I get that it's meant to raise awareness of poverty which is of course a good thing, but then there's also the interpretation where people say that the story is saying "oh suffering in this life will be sorted out after death" which is a message I don't like much because it stops people from trying to sort out these problems in this like. So in some ways I respect this story and what it was trying to do but in other ways I hate it and think it's too depressing. I did however LOVE Terry Pratchett's take on the story in "The Hogfather". If you type in "Hogfather No Better Present" on KZbin you should be able to find the scene.
