Soundwave Spark I didn’t see the full scene until I was like 9 or 10, because the VHS we had of the movie was old and they’d cut that scene out, except for the destroying the Eric statue. So it didn’t have quite the same punch as the full scene does. I guess Europe (or maybe just my country, I don’t know) didn’t think kids could handle the full scene. They also cut out parts of The Chef’s song and the climax of the movie.

People fault Ariel for just trying to get the guy and resorting to magic to try and be more like him(human), but Aladdin basically did the same thing, he resorted to the asking the genie for help to try and get the girl by being more like jasmine, (royalty).

@@JesseGolo But he also lied to her pretending to be a prince, and if it hadn't been for the fact that Jafar got in the way, he would have continued a relationship based in falsehood and lying to Jasmine. At least Ariel's new identity was based on starting anew, not just faking it.
@fcv4616
@fcv4616 3 жыл бұрын
@@JesseGolo That is true. Ursula's deal was shady from the beginning. But the difference is that, even though Ariel's deal was risky, at least she assumed all the consequences of her actions. Of course, Ursula had a secret agenda that involved taking over the sea, but Ariel didn't know that. Just like in the original tale, Ariel accepted all the consequences upon herself without affecting others. Had Eric rejected her, she would have taken it even if it broke her heart, because she understood it was her decision. Aladdin, on the other hand, was risking less but at the expense of others, and in essence, taking away Jasmine's freedom to choose what she wanted. So on the whole, I think Aladdin's mistake was worse. To me Ariel's decision was like practicing an extreme sport: it can be dangerous, but if it's a conscious choice, that's up to you.

@@JesseGolo That's true, but he was still impersonating a character. Lying to someone to get close to him/her isn't fair. When Jasmine confronted him, he could have told the truth, yet he decided to go with the charade. Because of that he was tempted to even use his third wish to keep his pretences, because he realised he would have to keep lying from then on. I'm not trying to bash on Aladdin, because he's good at heart and at the end he learnt his lesson. Both Ariel and Aladdin made mistakes out of being naive, and face the consequences of their actions.

Broke: Ariel should have just listened to her father instead of selling her legs for a man she doesn't know, she's 16 and stupid. Poor Triton having a stupid daughter. Woke: Triton probably was why Ariel was in that musical to begin with at the start of the movie, showing that her interests aligned with the culture of another culture and not singing (does she even like to preform?? And kh canon doesn't count ya'll) It was only coincidence that he happened to find a human attractive, but was probably content with that statue had Titon not destroyed it. Triton who, mind you, is a knowingly feared king when angered and it's pretty much proven through him destroying EVERYTHING Ariel had collected and treasured over her life (the treasures that she knowingly hid from her father). After that, of course she wouldn't go stay at home in a hostile environment, so instead she decides to run away to a place where her father can't ever catch her and all she has to do is get someone to kiss her. A good deal at the time considering the alternative. And yeah, they both make up by the end of the movie but think about it, it took his daughter taking drastic action to get away from him that finally made him reconsider the error of his ways. Also Eric is one of the most valid Prince's.

I normally love Lindsay's essays in general, but her take on The Little Mermaid was super biased and lacked context. Though I'm positive I'll get hate for this, I still would like to say a few things and I hope you, Lily, and everyone else don't mind too much. I admit, when I was younger, I was one of those people that didn't like this film and had thoughts about it similar to Lindsay (Nostalgia chick.) I did like the visuals, the songs, and the villain but I was originally not a fan of the story or Ariel. I thought Ariel was selfish and irrational to go after someone she barely met, and very naive to trust someone as shady as Ursula. I think one of the main reasons was I didn't grow up watching this movie; actually I didn't grow up watching a lot of the Disney princess movies now that I think about it. Only a selected few I did watch but sadly this one wasn't one of them. So when I finally watched it for the first time as a teen, I just felt really annoyed by Ariel and her actions and I couldn't enjoy the film. But now as a twenty-something year old, who has gone through a lot struggles and is still struggling, who has to deal with a parent scarily similar to Ariel's father but can't do much about it (and realizing how much the parent negatively affected me and my siblings,) and is also admittedly a bit miserable and wants be truly happy, I now understand Ariel's character and her drive. She found someone who made her happy and she went through great lengths to try to hold onto him. Granted, I still don't agree with her choices but considering the circumstances, I can't truly fault her either. I mean, if I had the courage Ariel had and was given an opportunity to be with someone or get something that would make me truly happy, I would take it without a second thought. Watching the film again with how I feel now has really my opened my eyes and seeing peoples reaction to it has helped me change my perspective of this film over the years. It's still not one of my favorite films but I do have a better appreciation for it now. Again, sorry if what I said upset anyone but I felt the need to say a few things about this film and I hope everyone doesn't mind my rather long comment. I don't know if Lily will ever see my comment but I also wanted to say 'Keep up the good work, Lily, and thank you.' I've been watching your stuff for a while and I love your content. I was first drawn in by your Avatar: LoK thesis and stayed for other content but mainly because of your SU thesis; you brought up a lot of the troubling aspects about the show that I also had issues with and it was refreshing to watch a proper analysis that don't skip over them (like others tend to do). Even though I may not agree 100% with all of your views in your videos, I still love watching them for they are thought provoking and encourage me to view the subject of said videos in different ways. ( I hope that makes sense...) Anyways, great video Lily and I can't wait to see what you'll do next. (Fixed some writing mistake. Hopefully it's better now)

Y know, I've never really hated this movie but I never understood why it was so beloved by many, I thought it was ok but compared to other renaissance and onward princesses I didnt like it as much, maybe it was how quickly she obsessed over Eric which I realize now is a normal teenage thing even I went through but didnt want to admit. it had been a while since I watched it and I actually like it alot more upon a recent rewatch. Honestly its alot better than I typically gave it credit for. I think it has to do with me jumping on the hipster it sucks bandwagon very young and the over indulgence of mermaid memorabilia that plagued toystores until frozen happened. Honestly I think I didnt like it because I always related more to belle and liked beauty and the beast and Cinderella much more as a kid and being salty that everyone I asked said Ariel was their favorite because mermaids.

I personally never disliked nor adored the movie too much (mermaids and their fascinating world plus the story are a great bonus), but what brushed me the wrong way was how she could obsesses so much about a single human man, be a rebel 16 year old (who thinks she's child no more, HAH!!), break rules, take the high risk of never seeing her family ever again, basically love at first sight -Disney cliché the dream guy (yet they got to know each other in the following 3 days, gotta give the movie some props for that). guess I was brainwashed to think how the Disney princesses are supposed to be some sort of role models and Ariel is quite terrible in the eyes of previously listen reasons. but, however, as Lily put it, she, Ariel, only wanted something more and BETTER for herself, aka improve her life. bluntly put she didn't want to live in a lie and be miserable.. it takes alot of guts to change one's life, thankfully she had the optimism and spirit of youth powering her soul and stubborn, adventurous personality which I envy quite a bit actually, heh. it took me 27 years to realize and see this side to Ariel, which I tip my non-existing hat to Lily, thank you so much♡

Yeah, I never saw Ariel at fault for getting the hell out. He was pretty much a tyrant to her. I wonder if he's one of the actual villains of one of my favorite movies. I love my little red haired babu.

She currently has 2 that I can think of, one is talking about how Tangled has degraded in quality ever since the complete tone shift and another centered around rewriting the entirety of Legend of Korra.

Still one of my all time favorites, even with wondering as a kid why she married an adult guy (didn't know he was 18 apparently). I am hesitant but optimistic about the new one, I don't care what creeps online screech about it.

You should really check out a anime called Saga of Tanya the Evil. It’s about a ruthless, 30 year old Japanese businessman who gets murdered by one of his coworkers. He would normally reincarnate in his own world , but since he’s an atheist, god decides to reincarnate him in an alternate WW1. Now he has to help Germany win WW1 in order to survive the twisted game that god has set in place for him. The thing is though, is that he reincarnated as a little girl, so the main protagonist is a 9-12 year old little girl, who is a complete psychopath. The reason she’s able to stay alive is because of her ruthlessness, cunning, skill, and her overwhelming desire to give god the middle finger. She even refuses to call him god, instead referring to him as “Being X.”

“You ever realize that what really drives Ariel is a passion for anthropology? That’s neat, I love the science fish.” THANK YOU! I’ve been banging that drum for years, while so many people whine and complain that Ariel’s only motivation in the movie is to be with a guy she doesn’t know! It’s super frustrating that people seem to forget that she’s arguable one of the princesses who’s the most interested in science. I mean, people say Belle is smart but she seems to be only reading fairly tales, while Ariel is so fascinated by another species and wants to learn everything she can about them. Eric was only that final push that made her want to become a human and it was her father’s abuse that pushed her to go to Ursula because she knew no one else could or would help her. ... I love Ariel, okay.

How is Ariel extremely intelligent? Ariel never questions Scuttle’s lies about human artifacts. Even if she’s not familiar with a smoking pipe, why would she think that it’s a musical instrument? Ariel is musically inclined so surely she would know what music sounded like. Ariel constantly forgets what things are called in “Part of that World”, as evidenced by the lyrics 🎶 I wanna see, wanna see them dancing, walking around on those…what do you call them? Oh feet! 🎶 and 🎶 What’s a fire and why does it…what’s the word…BURN? 🎶. Ariel gave up her voice to be with Eric whom she knew nothing about. She spied on him and was convinced it was true love. Typical teenager! 🙄 Ariel never bothered to take advantage of her muteness while she was on land like learning sign language or writing things down. In fact, if Ariel could write her name on Ursula’s contract, then why couldn’t she write her name down in front of Eric? Ariel makes Madison from “Splash” (another mermaid movie from Disney) look like Albert Einstein by comparison since Madison was able to *overcome her muteness by watching TV for six hours in order to converse in English with her human boyfriend Allen;* plus *Madison was able to convince the construction workers that in exchange for her mermaid necklace (since Madison wasn’t carrying any cash), the male construction workers would haul the mermaid statue in Allen’s apartment room* (either Madison has really good negotiation skills or that necklace is worth a ton! 😂).

@@beethovensfidelio Okay, at what point did I say she was extremely intelligent? I only said that she is one of few Disney Princesses who has an interest in a field of science and wants to learn more about a different species and the ins and outs of a different world from her own. Also, never said you can be smart if you read fairy tales. Hell, I can’t throw stones at my own glass house. However people really to stop with the whole ‘girl reads books = genius’ thing is all I’m saying. No need to be so sensitive about it 😁

FINALLY a good take on Arial that acknowledges her interest in science and artifacts. If she only wanted to be human for Eric then explain her room of human stuff and the literal fucking song about how she wants to be human before even meeting Eric. I also never noticed the subconscious trans themes, no wonder why I hard identified with Arial when I was young

The Little Mermaid is one of those movies that I respect it more than I do like it. I wouldn’t consider it one of my favorite Disney movies since there are some I enjoyed more but if people say it’s one of the best-animated films that Disney ever made, I can see why.
