There's really no competition - the 1989 version is so much more emotive and, well, animated, and it understands the narrative purpose of the song. It's really quite amazing how disney completely lost the plot and started doing these kinds of 'realistic' 3D remakes. If you did want to re-imagine these classics, why not try to actually innovate on what 3d animation can do? Maybe mix 2D and 3D the way some Pixar movies do? Would be better than this creatively bankrupt production for sure.

I love both. And no matter what people say, there is no reason to deny that Halle played Ariel beautifully. I recognize the CGI problems, an even that I would have preferred her to keep the reddish hair and the same colors of the tail and bra like the animated Ariel's, yet, I saw Ariel in her.

Knowing the back story behind the original movie makes you appreciate it so much more. Yes I grew up on it and I have immense nostalgia. There's more to it then that. Back in the late 80's Disney was facing bankruptcy and was on the verge of closing their animation studio. A skeleton crew working out of basically a portable size 'stuio' made this movie. The animation was hand drawn by one or two artist at most. The music was crafted by the greatest film composing duo of all time. (Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman) The story was modern and fresh at the time. Ariel was the first true disney heroine driving her own plot. Oh and don't forget about the incredible cast including Jodie and Sam. The remake pales in comparison.

@brighthammer8 mines the opposite, the marine life and their contribution to the segment without needing to sing is unmatched. In one of the wide shots you can see how barren and dull the animated one looks vs are these realistic, colorful, and unique fish. Mind you some of the new 2023 version was cut out to fit the length of the old one. To each their own I guess

It still kinda annoys me how sterilized the actual music in the remake was. A lot of the 'character' was left out. Examples being the Duke of Soul fish & voice, the entire point of the 3rd verse with the instruments that are mentioned being emphasized as that lyric is sung, the "can't decide if this is a calypso or reggae pastiche" electric guitar part, comically loud string crashes (0:28), harmony vocals in the second verse, etc.

I love the bits with dolphins and jellyfish in the live action! I think it was clever of them to replace the fish in the animation with other sea creatures 🐬🐌 and let Sebastian sing mostly alone; Flounder eventually grew on me but it took time, I can't imagine what it'd have been like to see a bunch of realistic looking fish sing in close-up 😂

I think the problem is that the 2023 feels more like I'm watching a music video rather than a musical number. The visuals are pretty but the animators don't take advantage of connecting the visuals to the song other than having them dance and keeping that one scene with the blowfish from the orignal. The original is packed with imagery relating to the lyrics and we even hear additional instrumentals in accompaniment when Sebastian calls on the other sea creatures (because he's literally acting as the conductor!). Having Ariel sing along with Sebastian sounds nice but it doesn't make sense in the narrative. She seems like she's enjoying it and having a good time which conflicts with her character and motivation. In the 1989 version Ariel is visibly bored and not buying what Sebastian is selling and we even witness her sneak away with Flounder.

i disagree alot of the remake is super fucking stiff while the cartoon could have a lot of freedom of movement using the water. The remake doesn't fully use the idea of how water can work and rather is quite stiff. Also a massive problem with this song in remake is Seb the crab is using other sea creatures to play the music while in the remake they don't it breaks a core part of this song

It's much more colorful in the 1989 version because its animated. You can literally put the most absurd colors in animation and it will look good compared to if you put it in live action. The movie reviews are 50/50. Some people like it, and some don't. So it really comes down to opinion. You either like the Live-Action Adaptations or the original animated versions. Either way, they are all the same story, just a retelling of it in a different way. It's okay to have it that way. I like both, but I prefer to watch live-action over animated ones because they appeal more to my age group.

how can they screw up so much in a musical number like Under the sea? The original idea is that Sebastián (who operates as a "superego" to her, speaking for Triton, her father and king of the sea) tries to "sell" - unsuccessfully - to Ariel her own world (her father's worl, that of childhood, that of carefree and bubbles, supposedly) over the human one (the outside world, the otherness) telling her that there (here) you have to work and humans have a hard time, such eat-fishing monsters we are! In the new version, with no understanding of all that, they make her sing along and interact with him, having a fun time alongside Sebastian, even throwing sand with him in the "what do they got? a lot of sand. We got a hot crustacean band." part, when, she does not only disagrees with that statement, from the beginning, but -as the animated version states- she is "not even there", especially at that point in the song. Flounder, the fish friend, comes to look for her in the middle of the song, which she barely listens to, and leaves completely by the end. Sebastian is left singing alone, and it was all an unnecessary waste of energy. Ariel wants to go to the human world, there is no case. Ariel is not going to be the caribbean crab's second voice because she doesn't even know what the song is truly about, nor does she care.

I don't think it's bad, but it was definitely poorly adapted. I don't blame the team behind it because they were very committed to pulling it off, but at the end of the day, it doesn't feel nearly as impactful as it was in the original. I don't really mind Ariel singing along, but there's an evident lack of fish and anthropomorphic behavior. There's no crustacean band at all.

@@cbismarck07would disagree there are hundreds of different species of marine life in the new version. People who just don’t know about it won’t catch it. The cartoon was too “cartoonish” which is the point but the live-action needs to be more realistic and marine life isn’t going to pull random instruments out of their ass. I love the newer version more was so beautiful with the distinct marine life and I enjoyed Ariel singing apart of it because she knows how amazing life at sea can be too but she yearns for something new. For example the blanket octopus Ariel was on top of is extremely rare and beautiful, the amazing jellyfish, the brittle stars, and so much more marine life than the original.

Yes, they're beautiful exotic animals, but that's not what the general audience normally thinks of when it comes to what lies under the sea. The climax with Ariel floating in the middle is a visual mess lol Also, none of the fish Sebastian mentions in the bridge ever appear in the song, which is a huge turndown.
