Great video. We have a sycamore growing and my misses suggested making it in to a bonsai tree. I typed it in and up came your video. Subbed a week ago and I'm in it for the long run

I’m doing the same stupid thing with my Norway Maple. Yours is looking great. Keeping those leaves small is a challenge. Thanks, keep growing.

…did someone say Norway maple? I’ve got a couple in the ground at this stage too, but went with the single leader vs 1 to 2 to 4 to 8 branch structure. Being Norway maples, they are now 1-38-256 after chopping.

@@BostonBonsaiIdiot ,,, on a positive note, they’re hard to kill. I know, I’ve tried my best.

cheers, Norways seem to be equally as large and annoying. But why not try, they are free and tough :)

Healthy looking little bugger. I assume you’re waiting for just the right moment to chop that little nub in the middle?
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 3 жыл бұрын
haha leave the little guy and his nub alone! hes just tying to assert dominance! but yes i keep looking at and thinking i shoudl remove it, but also wondering what will happen if i leave it. I'll probably remove it at some point.

Good work- it looks fantastic with the smaller leaves this year. I guess each year it will gradually get accustomed to less energy from the yearly root pruning.

Cheers Dave, yeah hopefully it does this.... might just weaker and weaker, but hopefully not. they are pretty hardcore.

Cheers. yes the insects seem to like them, but it doesnt seem to affect them much, they just keep growing and growing hahah. the tree is the true pest!

They grow like crazy given the right conditions. I noticed a tiny one, 10-15cm, growing next to some ornamental grass bush I have in the garden. It barely did anything the whole year. This spring I moved the bush and the sycamore is now almost 2m tall and 2-3cm thick at the base. I'll probably dig it out next spring and try training it as a bonsai.

Yeah they are crrrrrazy strong growers given the chance. Sounds like you have the start of a good tree there. You should definitely dig up and give it a go. So long as you know what you are getting involved with, its all good haha

@@BackGardenBonsai Ha ha ha, if it grows too fast I'll put it in a shadowy place like next to a bush or something to keep it under control. :)

Im loving this tree. It has a perfect canopy and will only get better. My Sycamore/Plane trees have leaves 5X the size so you are doing great at "shrinking" yours. Cheers broski 😎🍺🍺

Maybe you put it a bit early in bonsai pot? Since it has big leaves I would let it grow and thick up more before bonsai pot

Hey Ian how do I PM you please? I've a load of home-grown year-old maple seedlings that I'd like to share with a few of my favourite UK channels... red maple/acer rubrum, amur/tartarian, striped/pensyvanicum, mountain/spicatum... if you're interested? Cheers, Mike

Cheers Mike. all my contacts are here - www.backgardenbonsai.com/contact/ but I will tell you now, at the minute, i have no space for any more trees, i probably actually need to downsize. i need to move house, which i am trying to make happen, then i can grow an endless amount :)
