One of the best Bond films - so classic! Only the villains are a bit lacking, which keeps "The Living Daylights" out of the top 5 slot for me, but then again, I don't mind too much, since every scene is so beautiful (except maybe the lackluster ending in Whitaker's house). The first 45 minutes - England and Bratislava - are as good as Bond gets. The part in Vienna has nods to "The Third Man". The action in Afghanistan (filmed in Morocco) is spectacular. Oh, and the pre-title sequence might be the most satisfying in the entire series. What an introduction to the new Bond! Timothy Dalton gives an outstanding portrayal; I'm really happy that he got to play Bond for the short story of the same name that is incorporated into the film as it gives him a chance to grant us a look into Bond's inner self: a determined, but slightly burned-out veteran of the Secret Service whose professionalism hides a hopelessly romantic soul. Truly a tragic character. This particular scene here shows a good closure to the arc in the relationship between Bond and Saunders, whom he is first annoyed with and ends up respecting. Then Saunders is killed and Bond blames himself. The fierce look in his eyes when he answers the naive Kara: "Yes... I got the message." - wonderful! This is Bond! Thanks to director John Glen and his crew for such a brilliant 80s Cold War spy thriller. Also, John Barry's score is one of his best.

When Timothy Dalton was cast as James Bond in 1986, Sir Roger Moore reportedly tried to get back for one more movie as Bond. Even though it was Roger's decision to resign as Bond, it's presumably due to his dislike of 'A View To A Kill' that he became interested in one final but better written movie. But his wishes came in too late and the production team kindly declined saying that "Tim is our boy now." I'm sure it would have been a wonderful final movie with Roger but Timothy is so amazing in this, he totally nailed it.
@jdxsr854 жыл бұрын
Not true. On November 26, 1985, while AVTAK was still in release in some territories, Roger Moore advised Albert Broccoli that he would be officially retiring from the role of James Bond. He had no intentions of coming back and was lured back several times to the role in the past. Moore felt he was too old to play Bond while filming AVTAK.
@michaellogmans43304 жыл бұрын
@@jdxsr85 Yes, I'm aware of that process but just because he was basically building up his retirement, especially before/during/after AVTAK, doesn't mean it can't be true. Especially once Roger realized AVTAK wasn't really that great of a movie to end with. It could very well be (presuming the newspublications from 1986 are correct) that Roger did have a short-lived change of mind once TLD was on its way. I could honestly see Roger doing that, especially with his distaste of AVTAK and the other stuff like I just mentioned. I was reading a review of "The Living Daylights", the short story not the movie. The review described Saunders as being antagonistic towards Bond. I have read the short story and I didn't get that impression at all. So I'm wondering if the reviewer is confusing the movie Saunders with the story Saunders 🤔

I remember seeing this scene when I was 15. Whenever there is an opportunity to dispose of balloons like tidying up a work party for example I try and take out the balloons the same way 😂.

Saunders' differences were resolved with Bond for about 5 seconds before he was taken out. Moral of the story: if your character arc finishes in the second act, watch your back.

Every Bond actor had his specific time. George Lazenby should have had more chances though.

Lazenby made his choice, he refused to play Bond again. At least he later admitted he made a mistake.

The door was supposed to slice Saunders in half but they decided against it as it would've been too gruesome for a Bond movie and would've quite limited the age limit for the film

It DID slice him in half they just didn’t show it

Such a well acted part by Dalton. He obviously had problems with Saunders but understood that they were brothers-in-arms. Quite sad, really this scene. And poignant.
