Peter Wareham Don’t tell that to the Brosnan fanboys who can’t get out of the 90’s 🤣 Truth be told, I’m not the biggest fan of Brosnan, but GoldenEye was his best outing. After TND (which at least tries to be entertaining), he got saddled with bad scripts.

That 'You killed my friend, I will kill you ten times slower' look... Timothy Dalton's Bond has a seriously unhinged dark side in him, but still he can look like a charmer while slaughtering his enemies, and IMO that's why he is the best Bond.

This scene made Dalton my favourite Bond. Unlike previous Bond actors who would barely take a second glance when one of their allies was killed, Dalton was angry and wanted vengeance.

What a powerful character moment from Bond. He's so furious not just because his partner is killed but because his death is BOND'S FAULT. Originally Bond and Saunders agreed to meet at midnight. Saunders came in time, but Bond egotistically decided to spend some time with Kara on the ferris-wheel. This gave Necros enough time to set up his trap. Such an overlooked character moment.

I watched Spectre for first time in years last week and thought it was REALLY good. And CR is one of the best films last 20 years (and I am such an Eva Green fan!) but I think so much time has passed since Fleming wrote Bond that Craig couldn't be that Bond, he has definitely made the perfect Bond for the modern age. Forget looks even, Dalton just personified the personality of Flemings Bond. Flemings Bond can be a bad tempered, violent, impulsive, arrogant and aloof at times. It's a shame he never got to do more but at least we got Goldeneye out of it.

One of the best Bond films - so classic! Only the villains are a bit lacking, which keeps "The Living Daylights" out of the top 5 slot for me, but then again, I don't mind too much, since every scene is so beautiful (except maybe the lackluster ending in Whitaker's house). The first 45 minutes - England and Bratislava - are as good as Bond gets. The part in Vienna has nods to "The Third Man". The action in Afghanistan (filmed in Morocco) is spectacular. Oh, and the pre-title sequence might be the most satisfying in the entire series. What an introduction to the new Bond! Timothy Dalton gives an outstanding portrayal; I'm really happy that he got to play Bond for the short story of the same name that is incorporated into the film as it gives him a chance to grant us a look into Bond's inner self: a determined, but slightly burned-out veteran of the Secret Service whose professionalism hides a hopelessly romantic soul. Truly a tragic character. This particular scene here shows a good closure to the arc in the relationship between Bond and Saunders, whom he is first annoyed with and ends up respecting. Then Saunders is killed and Bond blames himself. The fierce look in his eyes when he answers the naive Kara: "Yes... I got the message." - wonderful! This is Bond! Thanks to director John Glen and his crew for such a brilliant 80s Cold War spy thriller. Also, John Barry's score is one of his best.

When Timothy Dalton was cast as James Bond in 1986, Sir Roger Moore reportedly tried to get back for one more movie as Bond. Even though it was Roger's decision to resign as Bond, it's presumably due to his dislike of 'A View To A Kill' that he became interested in one final but better written movie. But his wishes came in too late and the production team kindly declined saying that "Tim is our boy now." I'm sure it would have been a wonderful final movie with Roger but Timothy is so amazing in this, he totally nailed it.

Not true. On November 26, 1985, while AVTAK was still in release in some territories, Roger Moore advised Albert Broccoli that he would be officially retiring from the role of James Bond. He had no intentions of coming back and was lured back several times to the role in the past. Moore felt he was too old to play Bond while filming AVTAK.
@michaellogmans4330
@michaellogmans4330 4 жыл бұрын
@@jdxsr85 Yes, I'm aware of that process but just because he was basically building up his retirement, especially before/during/after AVTAK, doesn't mean it can't be true. Especially once Roger realized AVTAK wasn't really that great of a movie to end with. It could very well be (presuming the newspublications from 1986 are correct) that Roger did have a short-lived change of mind once TLD was on its way. I could honestly see Roger doing that, especially with his distaste of AVTAK and the other stuff like I just mentioned. It's what one believes I suppose, won't push anyone to believe whether or not newsreports are true or not. Anyway, I myself found this a fun bit of trivia to share.

Interesting how Daniel Craig is often credited with humanizing Bond, but Timothy Dalton got there first. And George Lazenby had some very real moments in OHMSS. I think of all the Bonds before Daniel Craig, Dalton was the one who let the tension in situations and even inner conflict show on his face, while still looking quintessentially Bond. The writing had lost its snap though and Dalton wasn't given the great one liners of Connery or Moore, which is a shame, as he was an actor of real range and gave the character depth without going all psychoanalytical on us.

LTK may have done poorly in the states but it was far from a failure. Its not like they ditched him after that, it just got complicated with licensing and then by 1995 too much time had passed. George deserved more than 1 but that was all a problem of his own making. Roger bless his heart probably didn't need 7. Timothy absolutely deserved to star in at least 1 more bond film if not a couple - he was craig before we had craig and probably the closest thing we had to the Fleming novels.

It's odd how many people are commenting about Dalton being "criminally underrated". Who exactly is going about doing all this underrating? It seems he is quite reasonably rated by a great many people.

People's opinions of him have definitely come around in recent years. With Connery, Moore, Brosnan and Craig all being legendary in their own ways, he still ranks fairly low on most lists. He just didn't have a long enough tenure, and audiences at the time didn't like the change. Not his fault.

This scene hits hard bc A. Saunders' death is totally Bond's fault and he knows it and B. Saunders dies right after he starts to warm to Bond and vice versa

Waiter “I’ll fetch a stretcher” Bond “Better make that two!” Dialogue that was cut from the scene possibly for being too ‘dark’ by suggesting Saunders was cut in half by the door. Maybe they felt the suggestion was enough so cut the dialogue.
@carlosayala5161
@carlosayala5161 3 жыл бұрын
No, I think that the second stretcher was meant by Bond for Necros Like he was going to bring a second injured person ... or a corpse
@RltchieI
@RltchieI 3 жыл бұрын
@@carlosayala5161 He didn’t know if Necros was in the area & at the point the line was said he had no clue as to who Necros was. It was only after the balloon blows in that he realises it was the balloon seller. Saunders however falls forward when the explosion happens & the door slams shut just after. Being cut in half is more likely and also fits with the darker tone Dalton wanted to go. Some of the dialogue in the work print is also more blunt & was toned down for the final release. Of course the suggested violence was ramped up for Licence to Kill with is suggested that Felix’s wife was not just murdered, but raped too.

Suggesting that door *cut a man in half* is even more cartoonish than the scene is suggesting, honestly.
@RltchieI
@RltchieI Жыл бұрын
@@UltimaKeyMaster a thick glass door shot via hydraulic ram would effectively cut a human in half. The blood and shattered mirrors also suggests extreme impact & the wide angle still images from the scene pretty much show the door would impact an area made of soft tissue that a sheet of thick glass would easily cut through when projected at speed. Any more cartoonish than watching an ageing Roger Moore in fight scenes with people young and significantly stronger than he is?

2 men on the same side, who don't see eye-to-eye in the beginning, but will always put the Mission and duty above their personal feelings in the end. Love the sort of reserved "Thanks" from Bond aswell. It would've been easy for him to just let Saunders walk out.

I was reading a review of "The Living Daylights", the short story not the movie. The review described Saunders as being antagonistic towards Bond. I have read the short story and I didn't get that impression at all. So I'm wondering if the reviewer is confusing the movie Saunders with the story Saunders 🤔
